Ian Jarvis, Financial Controller, Canal & River Trust Fleet Tracking Brings Two Years of Success For Canal River Trust Canal & River Trust, the charity responsible for managing canals, rivers and locks of England and Wales, is working in partnership with Teletrac Navman as part of a wider efficiency drive. It s a period of revitalisation that has not been seen since the waterways were constructed more than 200 years ago and Teletrac Navman technology is playing its part. Since the introduction of a fleet tracking system in 2013, the organisation has witnessed substantial money saving and efficiency benefits across their entire fleet. Financial Controller, Ian Jarvis, reveals three distinct gains for the Trust since installation. One significant issue was the extent to which vehicles were being driven above the internally imposed 60mph speed limit. This was not only put in place for legal reasons, but to ensure driver safety, manage carbon emissions and reduce fuel costs. By addressing the data from their fleet tracking system, the Canal & River Trust were able to respond to their duty of care and take action to prevent future speeding concerns. Over the last two years, speeding occurrences have reduced dramatically as a result of increased awareness and positive actions taken by both managers and drivers. The fleet tracking system has given the Trust the knowledge they need to improve driver behaviour, which has had a drastic impact on their fuel costs and CO2 emissions. BIG FUEL SAVINGS In 2010 before the tracking device was installed, the Canal & River Trust consumed over 1 million litres of fuel a year. Since July 2013 they have added 24 new vehicles to their fleet, and even with these new assets included, their annual fuel consumption is set to be around 875,000 litres this year. At current fuel rates, this equates to 150,000 in savings every year. LOWERING EMISIONS, PROTECTING OUR ENVIROMENT Carbon emissions from vehicles have been reduced by a massive 206 tonnes, delivering a further benefit for The Trust. This helped the charity achieve the Carbon Trust Accreditation for emissions reduction. Due to their strong performance this year, they expect to achieve a renewal of this valuable accreditation when reassessed.

There are so many advantages, and we ve not yet finished discovering them Steve Davis, Transport Manager, Holland & Barrett Helping To Make People Lives That Bit Easier Holland and Barrett is the UK s leading retailer of vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements. Its stores are a familiar site in almost every major city and town in the UK, with new outlets opening all the time. The company distributes stock to more than 500 stores from a central warehouse in Burton on Trent. This nerve centre houses a 40-strong vehicle fleet of 18 tonne and seven and a half tonne wagons, handled by more than 50 experienced drivers. It s a busy, 24-hour operation, with over 100 deliveries made each day to stores across the country. Given the scale of the challenge, the company s transport management team was keen to discover if new vehicle tracking technology could help to drive down costs and hone fleet efficiency. The company installed the Teletrac Navman vehicle tracking system across the fleet, together with the MDT Mobile Data Terminal allowing low-cost two-way text messaging with all drivers. SAVING TIME, IMPROVING SERVICE From day one, the new system immediately removed a number of administrative headaches. Steve Davis, Transport Manager explained: The stores love the fact that we can now tell them exactly where our drivers are, and how long it will be before they arrive.it means they can manage their own staff more easily to make sure they ve got extra people around when the delivery comes in. Job assignment has also become a breeze, thanks to the combination of vehicle tracking and messaging. When an unscheduled delivery or collection comes in, we just see who is nearest, and send a message with the job instructions to the driver s terminal in the cab. The driver accepts the job with the push of a button and we re in business. It s cutting out a lot of time and expense. TACKLING THE WORKING TIME DIRECTIVE The Working Time Directive specifies that a mobile workforce must not exceed an average of 48 hours per week. The rules require companies to operate rigorous record-keeping procedures, to demonstrate that the law is not being flouted. Teletrac Navman has come into its own by allowing Holland and Barrett to automatically compile a historical record of each driver s hours. It s a hassle-free way of keeping our records up to date, Steve explained. We ve also had occasions where drivers have phoned us from the road to say they can t take on an extra job, because they don t have enough driving hours left. Now we can bring their records up instantly nine times out of 10, they ve got a few hours remaining, and the job can go ahead.

5 Holland & Barrett THE BOTTOM LINE With reduced mobile phone calls and less administration, Steve is confident that the new vehicle tracking technology will secure some impressive cost savings for the company. Holland and Barrett s legal team is also currently investigating another potential financial saving reduced insurance premiums. Steve explained: There s no doubt that our vehicles are better protected from theft. When you put it all together, you can see how valuable a system like this becomes. Des McCauley, Transport Manger, Marston PLC Best Bar None National brewers Marston s PLC are boosting their delivery service to customers across the country with the help of Teletrac Navman technology A name synonymous with the perfect pint, Marston s has been brewing beer in Burton-on-Trent for over 150 years. The company has grown to become a major force in independent regional brewing and as well as flagship national brand Marston s Pedigree. It also produces the West Midlands favourite beer, Banks s. Marston s operations outside the Midlands now include such hallowed real ale institutions as Cumbria s Jennings brewery the Ringwood brewery in Hampshire and Wychwood Brewery in Oxford. The vehicle tracking technology really has helped us react much more quickly. Using tracking reports we can reorganise the fleet whenever we need to take account of changes in orders, says Des McCauley, Transport Manager, Marstons PLC As a major player in the drinks distribution market, Marston s operates a national sales network to a variety of retailers ranging from Marston s own managed and tenanted pubs, to a vast array of free trade accounts and to pubs operated by other companies. A fleet of 90 vehicles travels across most of England and Wales, making around 400 journeys a week. Timing is critical to keep Marston s customers happy in a difficult market. SIMPLER PLANNING, TOTAL ACCURACY The company installed Teletrac Navman vehicle tracking technology in all its vehicles in 2008 and, according to Des McCauley, the benefits to the business have been significant. In the year since we installed the Teletrac Navman system we ve really noticed the increased efficiency of our fleet, he says. For one thing, because we know where each vehicle is at any one time, we can give our clients a precise delivery slot, which we never could do accurately in the past. This is especially beneficial when the company is delivering to new accounts. McCauley explains: It s impressive when we can offer them a precise delivery time, which the vehicle tracking technology enables us to do. I m sure it has helped us to secure new business. Being so accurate is a major bonus and a boost to our professionalism as an organisation.

7 Marston PLC VEHICLE TRACKING EQUALS VEHICLE SECURITY With brewery vehicles carrying valuable goods, security is also an important issue for Marston s and one which the Teletrac Navman technology immediately addressed. Any one of our wagons could be loaded with as much as 20,000-30,000 of beer and other alcoholic drinks and is a potential target for criminals, says McCauley. We did have a fully loaded vehicle stolen once, but with the new Teletrac Navman technology the vehicles can be recovered as soon as we are aware because we can see where our vehicles are at all times. This gives our drivers extra reassurance about their own safety too. FLEXIBLE FRIEND Another commercial benefit of vehicle tracking for Marston s is the increased flexibility it has given its 90-strong fleet. The pub trade at the moment is experiencing hard times and it s quite unpredictable for everyone, says McCauley. One minute we can have clients making extra orders and then we might lose a client just as suddenly. The vehicle tracking technology really has helped us react much more quickly to all this. As well as saving time and improving service and reliability for customers it means we re certainly saving on fuel costs. Before we installed vehicle tracking, I suppose all that sort of information about which vehicle was where at any one time was just part of our knowledge. It was all in our heads, which made it all a bit haphazard. Now we re spot on every time.
