1 Hardware Announcement July 26, 2005 IBM TotalStorage SAN portfolio expands with IBM TotalStorage SAN16M-2 and TotalStorage SAN32M-2 4 Gbps switches Overview The IBM TotalStorage SAN m-type family of products expands with the introduction of new 4 Gbps capable 16-port and 32-port switches, ideal for building entry-level to enterprise high-performance SAN solutions. The IBM TotalStorage SAN16M-2 switch is designed to address the needs of entry-level and midrange SAN applications, such as simple first-time SAN deployments and application-specific deployments, in a half-rack width configuration. It starts at a base of 8 nonblocking ports that use industry standards-based auto-sensing and auto-rate-negotiation, for 1, 2, and 4 Gbps depending on the maximum speed supported by the attachment system hardware and software. The SAN16M-2 can be upgraded in four-port increments to 12 or 16 ports, and includes a second power supply to help provide higher levels of redundancy. Improved installation and configuration wizards also help provide ease-of-use. The IBM TotalStorage SAN32M-2 switch is designed to address the needs of midrange to enterprise SAN applications and to provide low total cost of ownership through low acquisition cost and exceptional port density in a 1U rack mount chassis. Starting at a base of 16 nonblocking ports, it provides nondisruptive upgrade in eight-port increments to 24 or 32 ports. The SAN32M-2 supports auto-sensing and auto-rate-negotiation at 1, 2, and 4 Gbps depending on the maximum speed supported by the attachment system hardware and software to help protect existing SAN investments. It is also FICON CUP capable, via the FICON Management Server feature, for deployment in mainframe SAN solutions. 4 Hardware requirements Rack requirements: An industry-standard IBM-qualified 19-inch rack with adequate space available (one half EIA unit for the Model 416 and one EIA unit for the Model 432) and sufficient power and cooling is required to support the TotalStorage SAN m-type family switch products. Non-rack-mounted installation is supported. You may need to order the required country-specific power cord(s) (#10xx).
