It was noted that we had attendance from as far away as Vermont who made a special effort to speak to our board members to tell us how much they enjoyed the conference. Vendors on site received a show special with an offer for advance reservations. There were also new vendors with specialized product lines who attended and have already reserved their spot for next year. While our goal is to provide education to our members it s also an opportunity to catch up with old friends and network at the same time! Taking time to catch up with friends at the Annual State Conference, August, 2014 Next year the 2015 annual conference will be held August 16-17, 2015, at the Marriott Mystic Hotel and Spa located in Groton, CT. As an aside, we are in active negotiations with one of our neighboring states to advance a joint venture for our Annual Conference next year. When we have finalized agree- O C T O B E R ments we will send out an announcement. Stay tuned for more information! AHIIMA 86th Convention and Exhibit, San Diego, CA ICD-10 Grassroots Initiative Volunteers and Nominations Photos The 2014 AHIMA Convention took place at a critical point in health information history, making the convention a must-attend event for professionals across all healthcare segments: providers, payers, vendors, consultants, and secondary data users. Drawing health information management (HIM) thought leaders and professionals and healthcare executives from every area of health informatics and information management, the weeklong event provided comprehensive updates, education, and information on current and emerging healthcare industry issues. As noted, the big buzz at the convention this year related to Data Governance. Complete, current and accurate information is essential for any organization in the healthcare industry to achieve its goals. Adoption of an
2 P A G E 2 Information AHIMA 86th Convention (cont d) governance helps manage and control information by supporting the organization s activities and ensuring compliance information governance program underscores the organization s commitment to managing its information as a valued strategic asset. Information governance helps manage and control information by supporting the organization s activities and ensuring compliance with its duties. (American Health Information Management Association. Information Governance Principles for Healthcare (IGPHC). Chicago, IL AHIMA, 2014.) Another new initiative at the national conference was the use of RFID attendee badges that allowed members to swipe in to the sessions and automatically earn their CEUs at each of the sessions. There was a 45 minute time requirement to earn the CEU for the session one attended. AHIMA noted that this new automation also helped to determine which sessions are of most interest to the convention attendees and plan future events accordingly. CEUs earned at the convention will automatically populate your earned CEUs by November. Members need only go to the AHIMA site, complete an evaluation and view the CEU report at the end. 4 P A G E 4 Lincoln College of New England Lincoln College of Southington, CT Phyllis Hilt, MBA, RHIA, Director of the HIM Program at Lincoln College of New England (LCNE), reported that LCNE is currently in candidate status with CAHIIM; and is expected to complete their accreditation directives at the end of this year CAHIIM accreditation is the ONLY accreditation that is acceptable if you want to earn AHIMA credentials of RHIA or RHIT. You will NOT be able to sit for the RHIA or RHIT exams if the school s HIM or HIT program is not CA- HIIM accredited. When you are researching schools, it is very important that you make sure the school is CAHIIM accredited. Many HIM schools and/or programs will tell you they are accredited because they are actually accredited by some other accrediting organization other than CA- HIIM. Be sure the school that you are considering has CAHIIM accreditation BEFORE applying or enrolling. Contact CAHIIM at ww.cahiim.org for any questions and to check to see if your program is CA- HIIM accredited. For Master's Level Programs in Health Information, see under "Schools/Programs" for Accredited Programs. For all AHIMA Accredited Programs for all levels, please go to AHIMA s Commission on Certification for Health Informatics and Information Management announces CCS exam is again available.
