3 ATLAS Cloud Computing US ATLAS Computing currently costs US DOE/NSF ~30M/year (~$60K per US ATLAS physicist per year) Cloud Computing will be the future solution for rapidly increasing ATLAS data and computing needs CS faculty Cui Lin joined our ATLAS program in 2011 and is leading our new effort in ATLAS cloud computing Goal: Build up the first Cloud-based Tier 3 cluster for US ATLAS, then expand to all US ATLAS institutions In collaboration with CS faculty/students from Chinese research universities. One faculty and one Ph.D student arrived in Fresno to work on ATLAS Cloud Computing 3

Lin: Current/Future Support Start-up and release time from Fresno State Co-PI in NSF EPP renewal proposal ( ) Chinese Collaborators: Existing funding from China until 2012, including short trips to the US to work on ATLAS projects Future: Apply NSFC (China s NSF) or other external funding to work on ATLAS NSF EPP director and POs strongly encourage this collaboration because of ongoing collaboration between NSF and NSFC 9

10 CSC at Fresno State Prof. Cui Lin is director of the Computational Science Center (CSC) at College of Science and Mathematics CSC received $250K from Keck Foundation to develop computational education programs for CSM depts. Existing ATLAS Tier 3 cluster and ongoing ATLAS Cloud cluster are important parts of the new CSC Dedicated computational cluster ($150K, cloud based) for student education/research is being set up at CSC. Dr. Lin is currently teaching an online cloud computing course at Fresno State using Elluminate Excellent platform for future online computing courses across the CSU HEP Consortium campuses 10
