Optical Illusions, Klecksography ( Inkblots), and Dali s Double Pictures 5 th grade ESL of Psychico College/ Teacher: P. Vlondaki/ Sometimes, we may see the same object in two very different ways or we may vary in the way we see the same thing. This is what happened in our 5 th ESL this year. The children wrote stories about optical illusions, inkblots and Dali s double pictures. Do you see what they see? Take a look and let us know. P. The old woman has a big nose and she s wearing a collar. She seems very sad. THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE BEAUTIFUL PRINCESS AND THE OLD WOMAN: B.P;-Oh go, away from me. I want to live my life without a second person in my body and in my soul! O.W:-No, no, no, I m not going away because we re one. You ll miss me! B.P:-Oh, Please! If you stay here, I will have difficulties in being married! O.W: Why? B.P:-Because the prince will have to marry and an old, ugly woman! O.W:-I m not so old and so ugly. And anyway my dream has always been to marry a handsome prince. B.P:-And it will stay a dream because you are so old that you gonna die! O.W:-You know that I m not dying...ok, I ll tell you the truth! B.P:-What truth? O.W:-The truth is that if you turn upside down or if I turn upside, then we re...the same!!! B.P:-Oh. Then, it s OK. But, please, don t come so often in reality. O.W:-OK. Thank you that you leave me here. And don t forget whether I come often or not may depend on you... 4 The Beautiful Princess and the Ugly Old Woman Once upon a time, there was a beautiful princess that lived in a gorgeous pink castle beside a lake with swans. She had everything she wanted in the world, literally, but she had a BIG problem! Every day at 12 o clock she turned into an ugly and mean, old woman, who had a big nose, wrinkles and messed up hair which she always combed! While she was an old and ugly woman, she locked herself up on the top of the castle and didn t let herself out till she was beautiful again. One morning, the princess woke up and was still an ugly, old woman. Something had gone terribly wrong and she had to find what, but how would she do that? How can I find out what is wrong with me when I can t get out of the castle like this? she wondered. Her face suddenly got an expression of happiness. She had an idea! She got dressed as an old, poor woman and went to the sorceress. Oh, powerful sorceress, it is I, your princess! she said. My princess, what happened to you? the sorceress wondered. The spell that has been cast upon me since I was three, will not go away, said the princess. That is because your soul is greedy and doesn t care about your kingdom, you only care about the way you look. Try to help the villagers and the spell will go away forever, replied the sorceress. The princess rushed out with an expression of sadness. She knew where she had to go. Hello, dear granny, what can I do for you? the mother of the poor family asked. Nothing answered the princess, but, can I, please, have the permission to sit here? I just want some company. Of course, you can, but would you sit with my daughter while I give her some medicine? the woman replied. It is all fine with me, but I can give you a warm home, health and all you desire if you promise you will stay with me in my castle and be my friends, the princess said. How will you do that? Are you the princess grandmother or something else? the mother asked. You will see and with those words she turned into a princess again. Anais Georgiadis (5c) Iris Romvou (5d)

THE KING I once knew a king With a big long beard He cut his beard And made it a wig Then there came a pig And ate the wig The pig was expelled And the king wasn t happy He once ate a lot And he burped out loud The burp was so big That he died with a scream Alexis Syriopoulos (5e) An imaginative poem that I would like you to enjoy A king is walking He is walking in the street. He has a big beard Which will turn into a wig His crown will turn down And turn into a collar. His eyes will stay the same but his nose is going to change, To change into two holes made of real horror And his teeth will stick up. Now you will wonder What he has changed into And I will tell you what I see. It s a blind Haluka zombie That that is about to eat your brain! Muahahahahahahahahahhaha!!!

The Man with the Saxophone and the Woman In the optical illusion I chose, appears a woman s face and a man playing the saxophone on her. I chose this illusion because it was a little difficult to see the man playing the saxophone. My story began on a sunny day. A beautiful woman was in her house doing chores. A man was playing the saxophone in the street. The beautiful woman and the saxophone player wanted to be together forever. However, they couldn t do that. Only the magician Roy G. Biv could make that possible for them. In their country, you see, the only colors that existed were black and white. People saw everything in black and white. The woman and the saxophone player were different. They could see all the colors. They went to the magician, Roy G. Biv, and asked him if he could help them make their country colorful. And he did! Now, everyone lives happily in this country. Annita Romanou (5e)

The Liar Once upon time, there lived a man who only told lies. He had a wart on his cheek. If you turned your head to your right, you could see the word liar written on his face. His nose formed the letter L, the tip of his nose formed the letter i, his mouth formed the letter a and his neck the letter r. He was a reporter and wrote for a newspaper. This job was perfect for him because he could lie as much as he wanted and he was very good at it! One day, he woke up and couldn t talk at all. At first he didn t mind this because he could write all the lies he couldn t tell. But his boss wasn t very happy with this. The next day he was having an interview so he had to be able to talk and lie. So, the liar and his boss went to a magician and asked him if he could help the liar. The magician gave him a magic potion and told him to drink it. When he went home, the liar drank the potion and then fell asleep. The next morning, when he woke up, he could talk again. He went for his interview and the men that listened to him, said: Your lies are very good and we would like you to come and work for our newspaper which is called Sports Time. The liar reporter was so happy he jumped with joy and soon started to work for this newspaper. He was the happiest person in the world. (Irene Souroulidis 5e)

M.C. Escher M.C Escher was born on June 17, 1898 in the northern Netherlands. He studied graphic art in Haarlem from 1919 to After that, he settled in Rome in He was very impressed by the hillside towns of southern Italy and he turned his sketches into prints in winter. Then, he left Rome in 1935 for political reasons and moved to Switzerland. Six years later, he returned to the Netherlands. Escher was inspired by Moorish mosaics. He also studied ways to make figures repeat themselves to fill pages perfectly. These prints amazed scientists, mathematicians and the general public. For the rest of his life, he blended art and science in his work. He produced prints of impossible worlds with amazing optical effects. M.C Escher died on March 27, 1972 in Hilversum, Netherlands. 9 Waterfall In this painting there is water in one canal. You can t decide which way it is going, up or down. Story Once upon a time, there was a town called Upside-Down Town. Everything in that town was going up during the day and down during the night, except a waterfall, which couldn t move. There lived a man who was a wizard. He tried to solve that problem. So he prepared a potion to make the waterfall move. It would only work if he threw the potion in the waterfall in one hour. However, there was a problem; he lived far away from the waterfall. He had to send someone who could run all the way there. That was impossible. He tried to do it by himself. He was successful. He put the potion in the LAST second. He was perfect. He realized that everything stopped moving except the waterfall which started to move both ways, up and down. That s the myth about Escher s painting of the waterfall.
