5 Software Development Life Cycle - Concept Concept What? How? Define Need Vision/Strategy Charter Project Plan Marketing Plan Who? Project Manager Product Specialist Development Team
6 Problem Statement Charter (Project Name) Identify the problem or need you are wanting to resolve with the development of your product Who - Who does the problem affect? Specific groups, organizations, customers, etc. What - What are the boundaries of the problem, e.g. organizational, work flow, geographic, customer, segments, etc. - What is the issue? - What is the impact of the issue? - What impact is the issue causing? - What will happen when it is fixed? - What would happen if we didn t solve the problem? When - When does the issue occur? - When does it need to be fixed? Where - Where is the issue occurring? Only in certain locations, processes, products, etc. Why - Why is it important that we fix the problem? - What impact does it have on the business or customer? - What impact does it have on all stakeholders, e.g. customers, suppliers, etc. Your problem statement should be solveable. That is, it should take a reasonable amount of time to formulate, try and deploy a potential solution. Goal Statement Identify the goals and objectives of this project Goals and objectives are statements that describe what the project will accomplish and the value the project will achieve. The goal should reference the benefit in terms of cost, speed and / or quality. It needs to be SMART; Specific, Measurable, Attainable/Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound. Role Project Team Project Team Name Team Member Project Scope In Scope: Identify the functionality, features and/or deliverables included in this Project Out of Scope: Identify functionality, features and/or deliverables that will not be part of this Project Leverage Opportunity: The outcome of this project can be leveraged to work with or compliment another product etc. Will this project positively impact: Market Importance Financial Impact Leverage-ability Business Case / Financial Impact H/M/L If so, how? What type of geographic, demographic and psychographic? Who is the competition? What is the financial benefit/impact of developing this product? How can this be leveraged for other uses. Customer Satisfaction How does this satisfy the customer s needs?
