2 CRAIG WATKINS CRIMINAL DISTRICT ATTORNEY DALLAS COUNTY, TEXAS Intern/Extern Placement Information A. General Information All of the intern positions in this office are unpaid. Interns are assigned to particular trial courts or to different divisions within the office. A court intern assists the three prosecutors and investigator assigned to the court with any needed legal research and briefing, investigation of the cases through actual witness contacts, preparation of the cases for trial, taking notes in the courtroom and helping where needed during the trial. An intern may also be assigned to the Child Abuse or Family Violence Divisions and will help the different prosecutors in those divisions with the same duties listed above. The Chief of each court and the Chief or Deputy Chief of a division will be responsible for supervising the intern. We do not provide a 3L bar card to any of our interns. Our office is limited in the number of intern/extern positions to the space available in our courts and parking limitations. (*Please refer to applications deadlines below) All intern applications will be reviewed and selected/interviewed by a Chief Prosecutor or Division Chief. Once all of our intern positions are full, we will stop placing interns. If not selected by a Chief Prosecutor or Division Chief, interns will not be placed in an intern position within our office. The intern program is one of our most important sources of assessing whether someone will be offered a job with our office. We get feedback from the prosecutors and investigators that are in contact with the intern at the end of their time with our office. And, if the intern has done a good job and seems to be a good fit with our office, they may be considered for a position as an Assistant District Attorney. B. Objective & Benefit of Work performed by Intern/Extern The intern will be expected to perform the duties given to them by the assigned supervisor listed in the General Information section of this form. The goal of the District Attorney s Office is to allow the intern to work closely with our prosecutors in their daily activities of running a court docket, interacting with defense attorney s, working on cases set for trial and all of the courtroom activity involved in trial. The benefit obtained by the intern is an in-depth exposure to the relevant skills necessary to practice law as a prosecuting attorney including the opportunity to confront and discuss real ethical issues raised in the practice of law as well as an opportunity to make a concrete contribution to the community. E.
