Limitation on Enrollment: This course is not open to students with previous credit for MILS 110. This course provides an interdisciplinary foundation in the field of leadership theory and practice. Students study the foundational principles, definitions, and various models of leadership. Topics include leadership traits, skills, styles, and processes; contingency, path-goal, and leader-member exchange theory; psychological, social, and cultural aspects of leadership; and ethics. Students also develop a personal philosophy of leadership and its application to the workplace and everyday life. This course is designed for current or future leaders in public safety organizations, the armed forces, government, business, academia, and non-profit organizations. Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, and Environmental Control Technology (AIRE) 122 Construction Drawings and Estimating Corequisite: Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, And Environmental Control Technology 123 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent. Advisory: Mathematics 35 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent or Assessment Skill Level M30. This course is a study of the generation, reading and interpretation of construction drawings from initial concepts to actual building construction. Emphasis is placed on how the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are integrated into the structure by architects, engineers and ultimately the construction contractors and subcontractors. Course content includes architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing drawings, and also covers job planning, sources and use of pricing guidelines, municipal, county, state and federal codes, energy codes and standards, specifications and computer software programs used in the development of construction drawings and used for construction estimating. This course is intended for students pursuing certificates or an associate degree in Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Environmental Control Technology. This laboratory course provides practice in the reading of construction drawings and plans for structures and building components. Students use pricing guides for Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC), computer-aided drafting software, engineering and architectural scales, and elementary sketching and drawing techniques to complete laboratory projects. This course is intended for students pursuing certificates or an associate degree in Air Conditioning, Refrigeration and Environmental Control Technology. This course provides an overview of the aeronautical knowledge and job requirements for a commercial airline pilot. Instruction includes advanced study of aerodynamics, large and multi-engine aircraft systems, performance and weight and balance, air traffic control and airspace, Federal Aviation Regulations, aeromedical factors and decision making, weather and weather services, and international flight planning, navigation, and procedures. This course, combined with Aviation 133, Human Factors in Aviation, fulfills all requirements for the FAA commercial pilot knowledge test. 3 Child Development (CHIL) 175 Infant-Toddler Growth and Development Advisory: English 51 and English 56, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5. This course examines typical and atypical physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth of the infant and toddler. The selection and maintenance of appropriate play materials and equipment for indoor and outdoor environments is discussed. Appropriate observations and visitations to the community are required. This course meets State of California Title 22 licensing regulations for teachers in infant toddler settings, and is beneficial for parents. 4 Consumer Studies (CONF) 110 Personal Financial Management Advisory: English 51 and English 56 and Mathematics 32, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent, or Assessment Skill Levels W5 and R5 and M20. This course explores theories and techniques of managing personal income, with an emphasis on financial goal setting, culminating in the development of a personal financial plan. It includes practical methods of gaining maximum advantages from income through efficient spending, effective use of credit, savings, budgeting, insurance, and investment. Stock portfolios and retirement planning are also discussed. This course is designed to help students who are planning to transfer to a four-year college or university to develop critical thinking, reading, writing, and research skills beyond the level of English 101 and English 105; it is a required course within many curricula. Assignments require a total of at least 8,000 words of graded writing. The course focuses on writing argumentative prose and critically evaluating arguments. A majority of the written assignments require some research and documentation, including library research. Designated sections of this course may be taught from a specific cultural perspective and are cross-listed under Black Studies and Chicano Studies in the catalog and class schedule. This course offers a survey of British literature from the Anglo-Saxon period to the pre- Romantic period (approximately 800 to 1799), including representative works from the Old and Middle English periods, the Renaissance and the Elizabethans, the Cavalier, Metaphysical, and Puritan periods, the Restoration and the Neoclassical periods. Students read and discuss the major authors of these periods, addressing relevant social, political, cultural, and religious issues. Students critically analyze, in essays and research papers, authors, specific works, and other topics as assigned. This is the first of a three-course sequence in Latin providing beginning level instruction in classical Latin language and culture. Basic language structures and vocabulary are examined and explored. Topics include DC (Direct Current) transient analysis in RL (resistor-inductor) and RC (resistor-capacitor) circuits; basic AC (alternating current) circuit theorems; phasor analysis of AC circuits; simulation of AC circuits using PSpice, Electronics Workbench or equivalent simulation software; and transformer and operation, application, and theory of basic electrical measurement instrumentation. This course is an introduction of physics presenting tools that are used in technical applications. Topics of study include measurement standards, scalar and vector quantities, kinetics in one, two and three dimensions, Newton's laws of motion, the gravitational force, the harmonic oscillator, work and energy, and momentum. The course centers on "hands-on" approaches to analysis of physical phenomena, without neglecting conceptual and calculation rigor. This course is an introduction of physics presenting tools that are used in technical applications. This course introduces students to the structure, organization, and practices of the U.S. military. Students examine the historical foundations, intergovernmental structure, and general organization of the military and its component service branches. Other topics include the military chain of command, rank structure, job categories and classification, customs and courtesies, and personnel policies. 8 Military Science (MILS) * 120 Military Justice, Ethics, and the Law of Armed Conflict Advisory: English 101 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent or Assessment Skill Level R6 and W6 This course introduces students to the military justice system, ethics, and the laws pertaining to organized warfare. The course covers a broad overview of military law, including rules of evidence, legal procedure, criminal law, civil law, legal services, and the Law of Armed Conflict. Other topics include means of entry into the military, the rights of service members, ethical theory, and government standards of conduct. This course emphasizes the practical application of legal and ethical concepts to common types of decisions made by military leaders. Military Science (MILS) * 200 Applied Military Leadership 1 hour lecture, 1 unit Prerequisite: Military Science 101 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent. Corequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in Military Science 110 with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent. This course integrates the knowledge, skills, and concepts developed in Military Science courses with practical experience in the field. It emphasizes the practical application of leadership skills in a real-world military-related setting, such as a leadership position in the armed forces, volunteer work with military families, or service with a military-affiliated organization (such as the USO or veterans organizations). The course uses lecture hours for orientation, review, feedback, self-assessment, and problem solving. In addition, students must spend at least 30 hours gaining practical field experience. This "capstone course" is intended for students completing the Military Leadership degree or certificate program. To receive credit a student must complete a minimum of seven units during the semester, including work experience. A program of on-the-job learning experiences for students employed in a job related to their major. One unit of credit is earned for each 75 hours of paid employment or 60 hours of volunteer work. This course may be taken four times for a maximum of 16 units. However, the combined maximum credit for all Work Experience courses from all disciplines may not exceed 16 units. Corequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in Physical Therapist Assistant 120, 122 and 123, each with a grade of "C" or better, or equivalent. Limitation on Enrollment: Special Admission - must be admitted to program. This course provides the future Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) a supervised application of previously learned techniques and skills in the treatment of patients in a selected clinical facility affiliated with the college. Student practice will be coordinated by a member of the college staff. Supervision of the student is shared by the staff of the affiliating institution and the college faculty. Seventy-five clinical hours are required to complete this course.
