2 BA in Muisc Welcome to Music at Sussex As Head of the Music Department, I d like to thank you for your interest in our Music and Music Technology courses, with their pathways in performance, composition, theory and technology. The information in this brochure is specially designed to highlight our particular approaches to Music at Sussex. The BA in Music enables you to explore composition, music history, opera and music theatre, electronic music, popular music and film music. Our staff are internationally recognised composers and specialists in film music, music theatre and musicology who will encourage you to develop your skills through lectures, seminars and tutorials. We also believe it is important to have the chance to study performance in a first study instrument/voice. Provided you have a Grade 8 pass, you can opt to take performance modules throughout your degree, and have instrumental/vocal lessons in classical or jazz at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, or in popular music at Brighton Institute of Modern Music (BIMM), or with an approved local tutor on campus. The BA in Music Technology enables you to combine interests in studio recording, mixing, production and electronic music with creative work including approaches to interactive musical multimedia, using both computers and instruments as musical tools. Many options, including composition, performance, film music, popular music, and media music are available through shared modules on the Music course. Our electronic recording and music studios are equipped with professional facilities. There s also a drama studio, and a substantial library of scores with listening facilities and numerous online resources. These are in addition to the vast collections in the main University Library. Practice rooms are available 24-7 in term time to Music students, as are Music-dedicated digital audio MAC workstations. The Music Department owns two Steinway grand pianos (a model B and a model D) which are available for practice by first study pianists. Our Music courses give you presentation, writing and compositional skills, as well as technical skills in creative electronic music, performance skills, analysis techniques and the experience of working with others. You will gain a firm foundation for a successful future in a wide range of professions. I look forward to meeting you soon! 4 Why I chose Music at Sussex I love Brighton because it s an amazing city, and the course here is really varied. If you are a performer, you get the music lessons at Trinity College of Music, and then there is also the academic side, so you have composition, performance and analysis. I m in the Sussex Big Band, and we do gigs and raise money to go on tour at the end of the year we re going to Lake Garda in Italy this year and we practise one evening a week for about three hours. I enjoyed doing Popular Music Cultures because, speaking personally, it was really interesting to get theoretical perspectives on a whole range of artists. Felicity Pellant 2nd Year Music student BA Music brochure v2.indd 4 05/11/ :09

5 BA in Music Your first year Term 1 Instruments, voices and orchestration This module explores practical approaches to effective writing for instruments and voices in modern musical contexts, guided by both historical and contemporary practices. You realise original compositions or arrangements for a range of different ensembles. You learn to voice chords effectively and imaginatively for mixed ensembles, optimising your use of both electronic and acoustic sound sources. Introduction to Music Studies Through a combination of theoretical and practical work, this module develops key foundation skills in the study of music and musicology, including popular music, ethnomusicology and recorded music. You also reflect on traditional approaches in the light of more recent approaches to music criticism. Music and site specific art This module explores a range of contemporary artistic approaches to site-specific art and the theoretical ideas that inform them. You will make a sitespecific work on campus using music and visual elements. Popular Music Cultures This module examines the social and cultural functions and meanings of popular music and the reasons why it exerts such a powerful hold on audiences and practitioners alike. Lectures and seminars explore issues such as technology, authenticity, identity, the popular music industry and music scenes. Elective You may choose one of the many interdisciplinary electives available at Sussex. Music Technology options You may also take options from Music Technology. Term 2 Approaches to Composition and Performance This module explores composition, improvisation and live performance via a range of different contemporary approaches. The emphasis is on creative work, developed through discussion and exploration of a variety of solo, ensemble and large-group performance activities (instrumental and vocal). Music and Society How can we understand the relationship between music and society? How can we evaluate the impact of the different media and technologies by which music is disseminated and consumed? These are some of the questions that this module encourages you to think about through a combination of lectures and seminars. Film music and sound practice How does sound affect what you see? How do visuals change what you hear? In film, the audio and the visual are deeply entwined in co-creating a film s meanings. This module examines the basic elements of film language from a soundtrack perspective, giving equal consideration to music, sound effects, dialogues and foley, but considering them always in the light of their visual and narrative context. Elective You may choose one of the many interdisciplinary electives available at Sussex. Music Technology options You may also take options from Music Technology. Visit for more information. You also have the option of choosing two elective modules during this year. The Rise of Classical Music Examines the establishment of a classical repertoire in the concert-hall, opera house and the home from the last decades of the 18th century. The History of the Modern This module considers modernism and music, alongside the emergence of mass popular culture. Music Stage and Screen 1 This module explores musical narrative from classical opera through to film music, encompassing a journey from Monteverdi to Bernard Herrmann s scores for Hitchcock s films such as Psycho and Vertigo. Music Stage and Screen 2 This module considers music and narrative beyond the classical Hollywood mainstream film music model, before studying the musical, and experimental music theatre. Solo Performance This module is for performers. You develop a repertoire survey in parallel with your continuing studies with a specialist instrumental teacher. Ensemble Performance This module is for performers and is a great chance to develop musicianship and communication in an ensemble setting. Music Technology options You may also take options from Music Technology. Elective You may choose two of the many interdisciplinary electives available at Sussex. 6 BA Music brochure v2.indd 6 05/11/ :09

7 BA in Music Year three Year three The following modules typically run in the final year. They give you the chance to focus and refine your specialisms and strengths, building on years one and two. They lead to a portfolio of work evidencing both your achievements and your potential in your future career. Advanced Composition and Arrangement Advanced Performance Film Music and Audiovisual Project Studio Project Dissertation: Case Studies Dissertation: Historical and Contextual Studies Project The Musical Music, Media and Culture Emma s perspective I have thoroughly enjoyed studying Music at Sussex. Not only is Brighton a vibrant place to be in terms of the music and cultural scene, but the campus also offers lots of opportunities for music making and other events throughout the week. Playing in the Big Band certainly was a highlight! As for the academic side, I have been able to study a variety of music modules which I tailored to suit my strengths and areas of interest: the modules available vary greatly, ranging from more traditional subject areas such as music analysis, to others which explore music and the use of innovative creative technologies. I feel privileged having been able to make use of a brilliant recording studio. Whether you excel as a performer, a composer, a musicologist, or a combination, Sussex offers courses for everyone. Tutors have been particularly supportive throughout the final year. While students are encouraged to pursue with conviction personal ideas for individual projects, tutors readily offer valuable advice along the way, keeping us all en route to success! Microphone types and recording strategies are considered alongside a thorough introduction to analogue and digital mixing. Different historical styles of recording across a range of genres are considered and practical approaches to multitrack recording are examined. The module aims to introduce studio production techniques from preparation to post-production, covering mixing and mastering for finalising tracks for distribution. Creative Music Technologies This module introduces basic skills in working in the electronic music studio and will suggest methods and modes for their creative application and development. It focusses primarily on composition in the contemporary studio context, supporting the Studio Recording and Mixing/ Mastering module. Practical tuition in the operation of hardware and software will be paralleled by selective study of electronic musical set works and discussion of the aesthetics of the medium. Music and Site Specific Art This is a practicebased module that engages with the making of site-specific performance in public spaces. This is explored through lectures and practical workshops the relation of space, place and sound, and the social meanings of specific locations. The module will examine a range of contemporary artistic approaches and theoretical ideas, as well as introducing you to practical methods for making site-specific work with music. Popular Music Cultures This module examines the social and cultural functions and meanings of popular music and the reasons why it exerts such a powerful hold on audiences and practitioners alike. Lectures and seminars explore issues such as technology, authenticity, identity, the popular music industry and music scenes. Advanced Composition and Arrangement Advanced Performance Sound in Interactive Media Film Music and Audiovisual Project Studio Project Dissertation: Case Studies Dissertation: Historical and Contextual Studies Placement Project The Musical Music, Media and Culture Chantelle s perspective The degree that Sussex University offered was much more original than other universities I had looked at. For example there was a particular emphasis on 20th century music which I found exciting as the study involved is much more contemporary. Whilst studying at Sussex I was given the once in a lifetime opportunity to attend a lecture by one of the most influential 20th Century composers, Steve Reich. Hearing him speak about his own work was extremely interesting especially as other composers of his importance are not alive to impart their musical ideas and knowledge. University is about furthering your education in the hope that it will take you somewhere far in the future. However it is also three years of a new life, where you will make new and exciting memories. By choosing to study at Sussex you can ensure that you ll create that bright future whilst also enjoying the journey towards it. 13 Graduate skills for life We asked some of our recent graduates to identify in what ways their degree helped them to pursue their career goals. Here is what they said. Not only is Brighton a hub of new music and culture but the music faculty boasts an array of exciting performers, composers and musicologists and has one of the best ratios of tutors to students. Having members of faculty who are keen and active was integral to my degree and gave me the confidence to audition for a Master s degree at Trinity College of Music, where I am now a student. I also have a record contract with a band I met in Brighton [The Leisure Society] and we have now released two albums to much critical acclaim. Helen Whitaker, Music Graduate Doing Music at Sussex was such a great experience for me. The small classes meant a lot of help from the lecturers and the students came to know each other very fast. The staff were very personable and supportive, offering one-to-one help when needed. The Careers Day opened my eyes to the options a music graduate has and thanks to the support of the staff and the interesting modules available I have managed to prepare for my future career. 14 Location, location, location: Brighton as a musical city Studying at Sussex gives you easy access to Brighton, with its vast daily array of gigs, club events, classical concerts and multimedia happenings, taking place everywhere from the elegant Dome to tiny basement bars. The annual Brighton Festival is one of the largest arts festivals in Europe, and the world-famous Glyndebourne opera house is just a few miles away, partnering Sussex in a number of enterprise and work experience projects. And if you manage to get tired of Brighton, London is just 46 minutes away by train... BA Music brochure v2.indd 14 05/11/ :09
