2015Denver Breakfast Collaboration Update Successes, Challenges and Future Opportunities

Background Denver, 2015 Pre-survey prior to the start of the Forum to determine what topics would be of interest Eight informal categories were addressed in a questionnaire sent via Survey Monkey two weeks before the conference to registered attendees Results, with 70% return in the first 24 hours, looked like this

Topic Response Percent Response Count Modeling the supply and demand 23.5% 23 of nurses How must nursing workforce education 20.4% 20 change to best position nurses impact on improving health & creating value? State based initiatives aimed at strengthening 14.3% 14 the health care workforce Value of nursing 13.3% 13 How ACA implementation is affecting the 12.2% 12 nursing workforce Challenges and opportunities to strengthen 6.1% 6 the rural nursing workforce The impact, contributions, and challenges 6.1% 6 confronting advanced practice RNs in a reformed delivery environment How nurses are impacting the implementation 4.1% 4 of the Detailed response sampling

Background At the beginning of the conference, flip charts were posted in the foyer with each topic available for further comment A ninth topic Diversity was added to the original eight Throughout the first two days of the Forum, attendees added remarks or questions inspired by the plenary and breakout sessions.

At the Breakfast Tables were arranged in groups around the flip charts with the discussion topics Forum attendees joined the table of their choice A set of guidelines was at each place, asking the following: Name of your collaborative project? What are the goals of your project? Who will be part of the team? Who will be the head/contact person? If needed, how will the project be funded? What data will be needed, or will need to be collected? As much as possible, outline the analysis plan to obtain the goal. Discussion Each group leader reported out to group Feedback & questions from the entire group added to each presentation Each group was allowed to own their plan, with no further interference from the Forum, other than a pledge for ongoing interest and support

Rural Group Original Goals Create partnerships Create toolkit Demonstration projects to grow your own Analyze what states areas have in common What happened? Update from Ingrid Johnson, October 2015 The rural health access group is going great guns. Colorado has obtained funding for a demonstration "Grow Your Own" rural APRN project which launched in August. We have applied for additional funding in hopes of expanding the reach of the project. The group is hoping to present preliminary findings at the International Rural Nursing Conference next summer in South Dakota. We are utilizing an existing toolkit that was created out of the University of Kansas as a foundation for working within rural communities to build and sustain a new APRN provider workforce. Right now all the major work is happening in Colorado and the group members are serving in a advisory capacity. It is our hope that other states will be able to obtain funding to try this out in their states.

APRN Group Original Goals/Ideas: Impact of nurse mg centers on pregnancy and outcomes SOP Paper State based National conference Hw demand early warning system Consolidate efforts Define emerging roles I.D. skill sets Looking for state involvement as an outcome RN/MA role definition Data gathering Looking at outcomes RN managing role

APRN Group (con t) Group topic/name: Healthcare Workforce Demand Early Warning Systems Members/organizations: WA, FL, SC, MO, HI What s happened so far? WA is proceeding with the Sentinel Network in that state. We also secured time at the AAMC Health Workforce Preconference for presentations by me (for WA) and MT (Carol Bischoff) about two efforts to collect frequent qualitative data on emerging workforce demand Any challenges? Successes? WA is going full speed. We are launching sentinel recruitment in June for a month, with our first data collection in July (2016).

APRN Group (con t)

APRN Group (con t) What s ahead? First data collection this summer, then every 4 months for the next two years. Plans for possible ARHQ funding Key to this effort has been building the Network which is the real outcome of the project: linking the employer/industry sentinels with the education/training/policy people who can respond to emerging demand trends. So far the reception in WA state is very positive we ll see how our first recruitment and data collection go this summer!

Diversity Group Original Goals/Ideas: Clearing house for resources Get grants all about diversity Find out what s happening Website Chapters in more states? Looking for data Project not started areas for opportunity!!

Value Group Original Goals/Ideas: Define economic value of BSN No literature Look at licensure data Others Maintain RN in workplaces Job descriptions

Members: Laura Hudson, MSN, RN Iowa Board of Nursing Chris Kovner, PhD, RN, FAAN New York University Donna Meyer, MSN, RN Organization for Association Degree Nursing Betty Rambur, PhD, RN University of Vermont and Green Mountain Care Board Mary Satre, MSN, RN University of Colorado Chris Tracy, MSW American Association of Colleges of Nursing Ann White, PhD, RN University of Southern Indiana

Education Group (con t) Deliverable: Faculty Toolkit Meeting Frequency: Monthly via conference call hosted by AACN What s happened so far? We ve met twice and have a third conference call scheduled for September 3 rd. Any challenges? Successes? Our challenges thus far include assessing the situation of how nursing schools, curriculum, syllabi, and instructors interpret and teach at the intersection of health finance and policy. Our successes include really awesome conversations with very smart nurses teaching and learning at the Undergraduate level when it comes to complex topics. What s ahead? We are reviewing options for gathering information including interviews, surveys, requesting feedback from online listserv Collaborative Communities, in order to compile a picture of what is currently being done to teach health finance and policy at the undergraduate level. We are hoping to emerge from this process with some best practices that will help inform how we build and what we include in the deliverable for this workgroup: a faculty toolkit.

Valueducation Group Determined too much overlap, groups merged Challenges: Some members were lost during the merge Some other competing value/education resources emerged Home organization challenges What s ahead? Possible reviving of tool kit idea and posting for resource at Center s website

ACA Group Original Goals/Ideas: Blueprint for retool of national workforce Move education at national level and decision makers on curriculum Need to do literature review Quick 1 year Project Status: Unknown Area for Opportunity!!

Security updates and fixes delayed release of the HRSA web-based model from projected 9/15 to 3/16, so project is just beginning to get underway What s Ahead? HRSA is looking for feedback on the model, particularly from state nursing workforce centers

Summary Of 8 possible topics from the survey, 7 groups formed and discussed projects Varying levels of success All groups experienced some challenges Time Technical set backs Group commitment Great opportunities that have not been worked on Great collaborators out there willing to help What will your group do?
