KEY FACTS 13m funding over initial 5-year period (HEFCE Catalyst funding and founding partners) Pre-commercial - positioned between scientific research outputs and commercial applications. Vision to be a leading worldwide centre of excellence for environmental analytics working with industry on tackling challenges in key markets.
FOUNDING PARTNERS
OPPORTUNITY: GROWTH IN OPEN DATA FROM SPACE Inputs Processing Outputs Regional detail in global context Sentinel suite of satellites will provide 8TB/day of free data about the Earth System Cloud computing Visualisation Informatics Data Assimilation Next generation models Earth Systems Application oriented R&D Prototype apps and services
Slide from Kevin Tansey, Heiko Balzter, Paul Arellano.
USE OF SAR FOR POTATO CROP MONITORING Telespazio VEGA are working with UK partners to develop a web based yield prediction service Combining in situ measurement with mobile phone imagery and wide area weekly SAR change detection Initial trials were conducted in the 2013 growing season and development and demonstration have continued with funding from InnovateUK Links between the SAR data and Potato Crop development will be established and linked to crop yield results Telespazio VEGA UK Ltd
CropID low cost crop classification for AHDB Start with database of field boundaries from the Rural Payments Agency Accurately geolocate low-cost satellite images from Deimos-1 Apply software algorithms using a machine learning approach to identify the crop in each field Deliver a map of UK vegetable crops for AHDB Horticulture All Rights Reserved. 10 IEA SUMMARY Broad expertise across partnership in agriculture, meteorology, climate science, earth observation, high-end computing, data science, data assimilation, Open Data, Internet of Things, software development Aim to form better links between academia and industry/government We work closely with SatApps Catapult (e.g. joint posts) Open, inclusive, pre-competitive model Strong synergies with AgriMetrics Demonstrator projects are a key mechanism for innovation and collaboration 3-6 month, proof-of-concept / feasibility studies Target is to develop 5-6 of these per year Funding is already secured for IEA core team to work on these
Internet of Things Social Media Open Data Earth Observation Gather Model Analyse Display Telecoms
WEATHER AND CLIMATE HAZARDS DEMO Presents information on tropical cyclones and their risk to life and assets Collaboration with Lighthill Risk Network and XL Catlin
SOME (OF MANY) DEMONSTRATOR POSSIBILITIES Utilise highly localised weather data for food supply chain management Developing database of historic UK floods for (agricultural) insurance use Ecosystem services: what is the value of undeveloped land to the community? Water availability in remote areas Developing the microinsurance and credit markets for farmers Use of data assimilation to combine multiple data sources 13
OPEN SATELLITE DATA are not necessarily easy to access! Catapult and CEDA are helping with this for the Sentinels may have surprisingly complex licence conditions with different interpretations in different countries may not have high spatial/temporal resolution but may have wide swaths and regular coverage may not be processed to a high enough level for your application Hence still plenty of room for value adders and the commercial sector Many applications will need both open data and commercial data 14
HOW COULD YOU WORK WITH US? Collaborate on joint bids (e.g. InnovateUK, ESA ARTES, H2020, ) Tell us your training needs Short courses, internships, secondments, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, online courses Connect with new partners in pre-competitive space Work with us on demonstrator projects to explore new ideas
The Institute for Environmental Analytics is a unique flagship centre, formed in January 2015 with 5.6m from the HEFCE Catalyst Fund and coordinated by the University of Reading. j.blower@the-iea.org
