Determining static loading and cushion curves are essential for any cushion design, but are generally only the beginning of a good design, not the end. A cushion design s geometry also plays a vital role in the performance of a cushion. This paper visually analyzes the effects that a cushion s geometry has on performance using high speed video. Bill Green IBM, Introduction The Global Economy World Wide The term, The world is shrinking, is frequently used to Packaging Engineering describe how the global economy has changed over the Team Lead past decade. This is an illustration of the fact that more products are ordered, made, and distributed globally than ever before. Internet stores are replacing brick and mortar storefronts, and increasingly savvy customers demanding the worlds best as opposed to what is available locally. This coupled with the fact that companies have been consolidating manufacturing operations, versus setting up multiple manufacturing sites close to their customer base, has driven the creation of large global supply models. > MORE ON PAGE 20 Two ISTA Members Receive CPLP- Professional Congratulations! ISTA, a non-profit member driven association is the leading developer of these test standards that define how packages should perform to ensure protection of their contents during the ever changing risks of domestic and global distribution. Currently some emerging markets, increasing global distribution and changes in domestic supply chain channels such as e-commerce and direct to customer shipments, are areas where the data related to the levels and type of hazards are not available, or need to be updated to insure the appropriate performance threshold requirements. However, incorporating the correct test threshold levels for various supply chain channels is a key factor. If those levels are too low, damage can occur. Dr. Siripong Malasri, Christian Brothers University Dr. Siripong Malasri, often known as Pong, currently serves as Dean of Engineering at Christian Brothers University (CBU) in Memphis, Tennessee. He also serves as Director of CBU s Healthcare Packaging Consortium. He earned his PhD in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University in In the past, he was a registered professional engineer in the State Dr. Siripong of Florida and is currently registered in the State of Tennessee. Malasri Pong was instrumental in establishing the packaging program at CBU. In 2001, while he was Dean of Engineering, a packaging class taught by a Packaging Engineer at FedEx was offered as an engineering elective. Between 2003 and 2005, over $500K worth of packaging lab equipment was acquired under a $3M grant from the Assisi Foundation of Memphis and in October 2009, the packaging lab became an ISTA Certified Testing Laboratory. On June 1, 2005, Pong stepped down as Dean of Engineering to have more time to work on packaging. During this time, a B.S. and M.S. in Engineering Management with a Packaging Concentration were established. In 2012, packaging was established as a department within the School of Engineering at CBU. In June 2014, Pong was reappointed as Dean of Engineering. In June 2010, the university formed the Healthcare Packaging Consortium and under Pong s leadership, the consortium currently has eleven active member companies: FedEx, Medtronic, Bayer Consumer Care, MicroPort Orthopedics, Olympus Surgical Technologies America, Plastic Ingenuity, Smith & Nephew, The Pallet Factory, The Royal Group, Wright Medical, and WS Packaging. Pong has worked on various consortium research projects related to plastic tote distribution, wooden pallet properties, and sustainability. In October 2013, the consortium and Cloud Publications (India) designated the International Journal of Advanced Packaging Technology as the consortium s official journal, where he serves as its Editor-in-Chief. Pong formed a TAPPI student chapter at CBU in 2012 and has served as its faculty advisor. He has promoted the ISTA CPLP program among CBU packaging students. To date, five CBU packaging students have passed the CPLP Technician Examination. At CBU, he teaches PKG 101 Introduction to Packaging, PKG 201 Packaging Seminars, PKG 490 Packaging Project, and PKG 495 Packaging Internship. He plans to offer new courses in the near future; PKG 202 Packaging Lab, PKG 410 Packaging Sustainability, and ENGM 644 Transport Packaging. Pong has received several awards and recognitions including: Induction to the Pi Alpha Kappa Honorary Society by the Mid-South Chapter of Institute of Packaging Professionals in 2009; Award of Excellence from the Memphis-Joint Engineers Council in 2006; Outstanding Engineer of the Year Award from the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers in 2004; and Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award from CBU in In his spare time, Pong keeps his body fit by walking and swimming.
