2 Department of Modern and Classical Languages Spring 2010 FREN 561 Linguistic Structure of Modern French Class/time: TBD Professor: Dr. Gérard A. Beck Office: Aquia, 306 Office hours: TBD Phone: (703) COURSE DESCRIPTION This course analyzes the phonology, morphology, and syntax of modern standard French, through a close study of selected texts (newspaper articles, short stories, novel excerpts, informal correspondence.) The purpose of the course is to give a scientific and critical description of a number of linguistic aspects of Modern French. The course deals with the different aspects of morphology and syntax of Modern French. The students will acquire the essential notions to study a living language (words, group of words, sentence, the diverse grammatical categories etc.) The course also aims at the bringing out of the errors of the traditional grammars (definitions, terminology, explanation, etc.) At the end of this course, students will have a better understanding of the mechanisms of language in French; a comprehensive knowledge of the structural components of the language. Advanced critical research and writing required. Prior knowledge of linguistics is welcome but not necessary. This three-credit seminar is open to graduate students only. TEXTBOOK AND REFERENCES All the following texts will be read, although not entirely, throughout the semester according to a schedule posted on Blackboard: Maurice Grevisse. Grammaire méthodique du français. Paris, PUF: Marc Wilmet. Grammaire critique du français. Paris, Hachette: A collection of specific texts to be studied in class and at home will be provided by the instructor and available on Blackboard. A non exhaustive list comprises Voltaire, Candide, Victor Hugo, Demain, dès l aube..., Rimbaud, Le Dormeur du val, Maupassant, Deux amis, Flaubert, Un Coeur Simple (excerpts), Molière, Le Tartuffe (excerpts), Jarry, Ubu Roi, Quenaud, Exercices de Style, Foucault, Surveiller et Punir (excerpts), Barthes, Mythologies (excerpts), etc. The use an advanced English / French dictionary is highly recommended. CLASS ATTENDANCE AND PARTICIPATION Since learning is a cumulative process best developed through steady, regular study and practice, class attendance is not only expected but necessary in order to be successful in this seminar. Students are allowed to miss one class without any penalty. Beyond one unexcused absence, students will lose 10% of their final participation grade for each unexcused absence. An excused absence may be a family or a personal medical emergency, a university-sponsored event, observance of a religious holiday, etc. For an absence to be excused, students need to provide a verifiable proof either before the absence, or upon their return to class. Tardiness to class is unacceptable as it is very disruptive for the professor and fellow students. All students will prepare a 30 minute oral exposé about a specific topic covering the theme studied in class that day, and will present it to the class (details to be announced). CLASS PREPARATION

3 This seminar will involve a substantial amount of reading, from either the textbooks or the course pack on Blackboard. As all in-class activities will be based on readings and research to be done outside of and prior to class, students are expected to complete all due homework in a timely fashion. Details of class preparation are on the semester overview pp. 3,4. REACTION PAPERS All students will prepare four (4) reaction papers during the semester, analyzing excerpts of texts given in the coursepack and studied in class, according to specific questions given by the professor. All reaction papers must be analytical in nature, and will need to show evidential proof of critical thinking. MIDTERM PAPER AND FINAL EXAM The midterm paper will be due no later than March 3 rd and will address one of the topics given by the professor. All midterm topics will include a brief analysis of an unknown literary excerpt, and a few targeted questions about issues, concepts and trends in Modern French grammar. The minimum and maximum lengths for the midterm paper will be 14 to 17pages (not counting the sources or the cover page) The final exam will be held in the regular classroom on Wednesday 5 May, from 7:30 pm to 10:15 pm. It will include a brief analysis of an unknown literary excerpt, and a few targeted questions about issues, concepts and trends in Modern French grammar.
