In this issue, you ll learn some simple ways to reduce your chances of developing this deadly disease. As the new Chief Executive Officer of Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center, I m truly excited about the changes we re making in order to provide our residents with greater access to high-quality healthcare. One example is our new cardiology unit, offering comprehensive heart care, from outpatient studies to emergency treatment, close to home. Our expanded inpatient rehab facility allows us to meet a growing need for patients recovering from stroke or heart attacks, spinal cord or brain injuries and major surgery. The Rehab Center also offers inpatient kidney dialysis, making it convenient for patients to have these vital treatments without having to be transferred to a hospital out of town. Finally, as the sunny days of summer get closer, keep in mind that some of the most common dangers for children are also a big part of summer fun: bikes, pools, trampolines and campfires. In this issue, we offer tips for summer safety. I hope you enjoy this issue of Health News, and wish you and your family a happy, healthy and safe summer. Richard Prati, FACHE, CPA Chief Executive Officer LEVEL IV TRAUMA CENTER AT FDRMC As the only emergency room in the area, the Emergency Department at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center is a 14-bed Level IV Trauma Center that plays a crucial role in meeting the urgent health needs of our residents. 3 INPATIENT REHAB or SKILLED NURSING HOME: Which Is Right For You? Choosing the right rehabilitation program after a serious injury or illness is critical to recovery. Use this guide to help you make an informed decision. Acute vs. subacute rehabilitation First, you need to determine whether or not the facilities you re considering offer acute or sub-acute rehabilitation. It is essential to know that they are not the same thing. Acute inpatient rehabilitation therapies are designed to optimize a patient s recovery from a specific medical condition, whether it s a heart attack, spinal cord or brain injury or major surgery. Subacute rehabilitation (skilled nursing home) is less intense and less comprehensive than acute rehab. It s usually recommended for patients who are not physically ready for a more vigorous acute program. Example: A patient recovering from a stroke often recovers faster in an acute rehab setting, because specialized therapies are needed to re-learn basic skills, such as speaking, eating, getting dressed and walking. Inpatient Rehab Hospital (Acute) Close medical supervision by physician with specialized training 24-hour rehabilitation nursing Multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, case managers, therapists Nursing Home/Skilled Nursing Facility (Subacute) Physician interaction once or twice a week; specialized training not required Not required Not required 3 hours of rehab therapy daily Not required Physical, occupational, speech, cognitive therapy Not required Targeted therapies for faster recovery Fort Duncan provides the only acute, inpatient rehabilitation unit in Eagle Pass. Recently, the unit added six new inpatient beds for a total of 21 private rooms. Patients receive individualized care to help achieve the highest level of recovery possible after an injury or illness and it s all here close to home. The fact that physicians can follow their patients into rehabilitation is one way we achieve faster recovery times, says Larisa Higgins, program manager of Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center s Rehabilitation unit. Families are encouraged to participate At Fort Duncan, families are welcome to visit at any time. This helps when the patient is discharged, because families learn how to continue the patient s rehab at home. In Eagle Pass, patients are returning to their homes after rehabilitation, rather than entering a nursing home. When they can remain in their homes with their family, their quality of life is improved, Higgins says. 4 FEATURE story HEART HEALTHY & Hispanic 8 ways Hispanic-Americans can prevent heart disease Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of Hispanic-Americans each year, accounting for nearly 30 percent of deaths*. The Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS-SOL) revealed that among Hispanic and Latino adults in the United States, 80 percent of men and 71 percent of women have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes or smoking. * Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 4

5 Heart disease: A growing threat The study, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, also found that all Hispanic and Latino groups born in the United States are more likely to have multiple cardiovascular disease risk factors, compared to those born outside the country. This is the largest study to date to examine heart disease risk factors within a diverse Hispanic/Latino population, says James Galizia, MD a cardiologist at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center. The results show the need for education and lifestyle change programs to lessen heart disease among Hispanic/Latino people. Change your habits, lower your risk The good news is that a few simple lifestyle changes can reduce your risks for cardiovascular disease. Here are some of the major risk factors affecting Hispanic-Americans, and what you can do to lower your risk: See a doctor for regular check-ups Make sure your physician is someone you can talk to easily. Keep your blood pressure at or below 120/80 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury). See your doctor for help. Check your cholesterol to make sure it stays below 200 mg/dl A cholesterol reading of 240 mg/dl or higher more than doubles the risk of coronary heart disease. Check for early signs of kidney disease Ask your doctor about a urine test to detect protein and/or a blood test to measure kidney function Eat a healthy diet with lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains Bake, broil, grill, steam, boil or poach food instead of frying. Limit the use of salt, cheese, sausage (chorizo or salchicha), high-fat meats (chicharrón or cuerito) and whole milk. Exercise 30 minutes every day Pick an activity you enjoy or find a sport you can do with your family. Stop smoking Smokers run higher risks of developing heart and lung diseases, as well as stroke and cancer. Breathing second-hand smoke can make asthma worse and cause coughing, wheezing and ear infections in children*. * 5 Lose weight if you are obese or overweight Ask your doctor to calculate your Body Mass Index, which should be between 19 and 24. But how do you know what to believe, and, more importantly, what will work best for you? James J. Galizia, MD, a cardiologist at Fort Duncan Dr. Galizia brings a wealth of experience in cardiology to our community. He is now accepting new patients. Aspirin has been proven in many studies to help prevent both heart attacks and strokes by interfering with the blood s clotting action. But you need to talk with your healthcare provider first. People with certain health conditions may be at risk for complications if they take aspirin daily. Q Can a glass of wine with dinner help to reduce my risk? When it comes to drinking alcohol, moderation is key to achieving any health benefits. Moderate alcohol intake (one drink per day for women; two drinks for men) is associated with decreased incidence of coronary heart disease and heart attacks. Of course, the health risks and personal consequences of overconsumption can easily outweigh the possible benefits. Q Is chocolate really good for your heart? It can be, but not all chocolate is created equal. Dark chocolate contains a higher percentage of flavonoids, a class of plant nutrients that have a similar effect to aspirin in making blood platelets less sticky and able to clot. The key is SMALL amounts; we recommend one small piece of dark chocolate per day. Q What are the scientifically proven ways to reduce my risk? According to the Mayo Clinic, 80 percent of heart disease can be prevented simply by making a few lifestyle changes. These include maintaining a healthy weight with a low-fat, low-salt diet; avoiding tobacco products; exercising consistently and limiting alcohol consumption. 6

7 June IS NATIONAL SAFETY MONTH It was a long time coming, but summer is here at last! Here are some tips to help you and your family enjoy a safe, happy and healthy summer: Food: Don t let bacteria spoil the party Separate, don t contaminate. Keep raw meats and seafood away from cooked or ready-toeat foods. Refrigerate raw foods in sealed containers or plastic bags to prevent dripping. Use a meat thermometer. Use a meat thermometer to ensure meats have reached a safe, internal temperature: hamburger-160 F; chicken- 165 F; pork-150 F; steak-145 F; hot dogs-140 F.* * Chill correctly. Refrigerators should be set between 34 F and 40 F and freezers at 0 F. Defrost frozen foods in the refrigerator or in cold water and place leftovers in a fridge or cooler within one hour after use. Fun: Stay active but stay safe Head for a helmet. For kids and adults alike, wearing a bicycle helmet is the most effective way to prevent a life-threatening head injury. Look for the seal of approval from Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Obey road rules. Cyclists must follow the same traffic rules as automobiles: use correct turn signals and ride in single file with traffic, not against it. You should also stay off sidewalks and try to avoid major roads. Skip the floaties. Avoid inflatable swimming aids such as arm floaties. A Coast Guard-approved life vest is the only flotation device you should use. Even so, stay within arm s reach of your child. Sun: Smart strategies to save your skin Keep your cool. When possible, avoid outdoor activities during the hours between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun s rays are the strongest. Block those rays. Always wear a broad-spectrum (protection against both UVA and UVB) sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming. Top it off. Wear a hat with a 4-inch brim all around to protect areas often exposed to the sun, such as the neck, ears, forehead, nose and scalp. 7
