3 30 Years of Best Companies The Working Mother Best Companies list began in 1986 with 30 companies, when the fastest growing segment in the American workforce was women especially working mothers. Since then, the initiative has changed the way the country thinks about working moms, who are no longer a novelty in the office. Benefits and policies that make life easier for women with kids at home are the same ones that help dads, people caring for elderly relatives, people with volunteer commitments and anyone with a time-intensive hobby to maintain a vibrant career while pursuing their personal interests. The original Best Companies list focused on a number of areas, including: Compensation Opportunities for advancement Parent-friendly benefits, including maternity leave, flexibility, child care and job sharing The Working Mother Best Companies application now includes 500 questions focusing on all areas of work life, including benefits, flexibility, parental leave, advancement and child care. Pinnacle Award IBM and Johnson & Johnson are the only companies to have earned a place on the list all 30 years. Source: 2015 Working Mother 100 Best Companies workingmother.com/wmri 3

4 Working Mother Research Institute The Working Mother Research Institute collects data on the workforces and policies of the winning companies in order to: Reveal how the Best Companies lead in the areas of representation, benefits, advancement, child care, flexible work arrangements, parental leave and company culture. Create a benchmark of progressive policies and programs that make organizations succeed. Raise awareness of the issues working mothers and all employees face in the workplace and encourage the development of programs to address those issues. Promote the interests of working mothers in corporate America by honoring companies that successfully help employees integrate home and work. 12 What Paid Leave Means to Moms When I found out that I was pregnant, I had only been employed at Finnegan for four months. I was nervous about asking for maternity leave right around my first anniversary with the firm, but I shouldn t have been worried at all! The firm was incredibly supportive throughout my pregnancy. I was able to arrange my schedule to accommodate doctor appointments and work from home when I was too uncomfortable to bear the Metro in the heat of the D.C. summer. Once my son was born, I took full advantage of the firm s generous maternity leave policy. I came back to work a week early and have been able to use the last few days of leave to give me some flexibility as I transition into my new role as a working mom. STEPHANIE SANDERS, J.D., INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY TRAINING MANAGER, FINNEGAN HENDERSON, FARABOW, GARRETT & DUNNER, A 2015 WORKING MOTHER 100 BEST COMPANY Finnegan offers 13 weeks of fully paid maternity leave, on average. workingmother.com/wmri 12

13 What Paid Leave Means to Moms Before my leave started, I worked with my manager to plan my leave and work backup so it would be a smooth transition for both me and my team. I had also informed them in advance that I would take another break after returning. I returned from maternity leave after 12 weeks. I joined full time and jumped right in. My team covered my work while I was out and helped me get back up to speed with everything. A few months after my return, I took 5 weeks off to take my son to visit family in India and spend some time helping him adjust to our nanny. I appreciated having the flexibility to split my leave to do this. SHUCHI BHALLA, SYSTEMS ANALYST, SENIOR, QUALCOMM, A 2015 WORKING MOTHER 100 BEST COMPANY Qualcomm offers 6 weeks of fully paid maternity leave, on average. workingmother.com/wmri 13

14 What Paid Leave Means to Moms I have taken maternity leave both as an associate and as a partner. I have found the firm and my colleagues to be incredibly supportive of my time away from the office. The generous leave policies have allowed me the flexibility to be both a great mom and to be successful in my career. BRIDGET WEISS, PARTNER, ARNOLD & PORTER, A 2015 WORKING MOTHER 100 BEST COMPANY Arnold & Porter offers an average of 18 weeks of fully paid maternity leave. workingmother.com/wmri 14

17 Best vs. Rest: Paid Paternity Leave The past four years have seen a steady increase in the number of Best Companies offering paid paternity leave, while, nationwide, the rate has increased only slightly. PERCENTAGE OF COMPANIES OFFERING PAID PATERNITY LEAVE 78% 90% 16% 17% Nationwide 100 Best Companies Source: 2012, 2015 Working Mother 100 Best Companies; national numbers are based on the 2012 and 2015 benefits surveys of Society for Human Resource Management members workingmother.com/wmri 17

AVERAGE WEEKS OF JOB- GUARANTEED PATERNITY LEAVE (BEYOND WHAT FMLA REQUIRES) OFFERED TO FULL-TIME EXEMPT FATHERS AT BEST COMPANIES FINRA offers an average of 13 weeks of fully paid leave to new dads. 20 What Paid Leave Means to Dads This is such a great benefit for dads, because too often Mom is the only one at home bonding with baby while she is out on Maternity Leave. By offering Paternity Leave the LEGO Group truly shows that it is a family-oriented company. After doing some research I found that I was eligible to stay home for a maximum of one month. During that first month of life, I was able to form a great bond with our daughter. With a wife who was recouping from giving birth and a newborn, I could help take care of our little one while Mom needed to rest and was the ever ready second set of hands. Being able to stay home made everything that much easier. One of my biggest responsibilities during the month was being the chauffeur to and from the doctor s appointments and also being in charge of preparing most of the meals. CHRISTOPHER WRONA, ANALYST IN ACCOUNTS RECEIVABLE, LEGO GROUP, A 2015 WORKING MOTHER 100 BEST COMPANY LEGO Group offers 2 weeks of fully paid paternity leave, on average. workingmother.com/wmri 20

21 What Paid Leave Means to Dads I had a son born in December 2013 and took paternity leave in I felt very fortunate to have a paid paternity leave benefit and to work in a culture that supported taking the time. I ve found this benefit is rather uncommon for dads in the U.S. and even when the benefit exists, there is still often a taboo about men using it. The time I got to spend with my newborn son was wonderful. The first year truly does go by fast and I m happy I had extra time to enjoy it. ROBERT GOETSCH, ASSOCIATE MANAGER, PROCUREMENT, SC JOHNSON, A 2015 WORKING MOTHER 100 BEST COMPANY SC Johnson offers 2 weeks of fully paid paternity leave, on average. workingmother.com/wmri 21

22 What Paid Paternity Leave Means to Moms My husband used paid parental leave when our son Parker was born. We were grateful to have the time for him to bond with our son and to help me while I was healing from a C-section. Being able to take paid leave versus using paid time off (PTO) is awesome. We can use PTO for other reasons medical, vacation, etc. And we didn t have to worry about using up PTO or taking leave without pay. It s a great benefit for fathers and mothers. JULIE RAVELING, IT SYSTEM ANALYST-LEAD, THE PRINCIPAL FINANCIAL GROUP, A 2015 WORKING MOTHER 100 BEST COMPANY The Principal Financial Group offers 2 weeks of fully paid paternity leave, on average. workingmother.com/wmri 22

23 Paid Adoption Leave workingmother.com/wmri 23

28 What Paid Leave Means to Adoptive Parents When our adoption initially fell through, my manager understood the heartbreak this caused for my wife and me. She sent the two of us away on a long weekend that she funded and arranged for my meetings to be canceled. Weeks later, when we learned that our disappointment had turned into an approved adoption of twin infant girls, she allowed me the time away I needed to bond with our babies as a new dad. The support my wife and I received from my manager and Roche was truly amazing. TODD SIESKY, ROCHE, A 2015 WORKING MOTHER 100 BEST COMPANY Roche offers 6 weeks of paid adoption leave. workingmother.com/wmri 28

29 Best vs. Rest: Programs for Parents Nationwide, the percentage of employers offering child care resource and referral services (9%), adoption assistance (7%), and lactation support services (5%), has shrunk since However, nearly all Best Companies support these programs for employee parents.
