CHAPTER IV FINDING AND DISCUSSION In this chapter, the researcher will describe about my result of research. The result of this research will answer the questions in research questions. There are how the process of English lerning at Hubulo islamic boarding school? and what factors influence of English learning in Hubulo islamic boarding school? 4.1 The Process of English learning at Hubulo Islamic boarding school Hubulo Islamic boarding school is the one of boarding school which located in Gorontalo province. In this school the students must live in boarding environment. It is because teachers in Hubulo were providing dormitory for the students, so that the students learning activity can be controlled by the teacher especially in English learning. In the book of Hubulo Students discipline and collusion sanction, section 2 which states about unit of education system, explain that: 1. Hubulo Islamic boarding school is the school with boarding system which has two mine activities. There are teaching and mothering activities. 2. Teaching and mothering activity having the character of interdependency and represent one intact unity in Hubulos system education. 3. The unity between teaching in class education and teaching in dormitory bring consequence that dormitory and school represent one intact unity
which have equivalence in the effort attainment of boarding schools aim. Based on observation result, the researcher found that the students in Hubulo Islamic boarding school get English subject by formal and informal ways. It means that the students learn English in the school (formal) and learn in the boarding environment (informal). In the school, the students learn about material of English which adapted based on syllabus and KTSP curriculum. It puts the syllabus and Lesson Plan in Appendix 4. On the other side, the students also learn English by informal environment. In informal environment the students were taught by their teacher and senior who lived in boarding itself. They learned English from some boarding activities that can be improved their English ability. Furthermore, there are some English activities which often they do in informal environment. Such as: 1. English speech English speech is the students activity in every Friday night. This activity represents a form of English learning for the students in Hubulo Islamic boarding school. In this activity, all students who get duty to speech in next week, they have to make speech copy alone. They must also search 3 signatures. There are the signature from Adviser, conversation guide, and the students in English section. To get this signature, the students must show the speech copy to them. The three will be repairing their grammar. They also to have opportunity to perform in front of
English section, before they show in front of all students and then for the students who do not follow the rules, they will get the punishment. 2. Vocabulary Vocabulary is the one of language activity, because before they sleep in the night and after Shubuh pray they were getting 5 vocabularies and example in the sentence during one week, and then they must demonstrated that vocabularies to English section in Friday morning. For the students do not this activity, they will get punishment from their senior in English section. 3. Conversation Conversation is the mine activity from other language activities. Because in this activity the students must do conversation by using vocabulary that was they get in every day during one week. They were doing this activity in Friday after Ashar pray. In this activity they will do conversations with their friends and their senior in conversation section will guide them. For the students do not this activity, they will get the punishment. The punishments for them are reading Al-Qur an, and doing double conversation in the next week. The three activities above are form of English learning at the out of school time. Besides activities above, Hubulo Islamic boarding school also having rules where all students have accustomed use English and Arab. So
that during schedule of English week, they cannot use other language. For the students who not following these rules, they will get punishment. The punishment is will be adapted by amount of vocabulary which they use. The rules and the punishment you can see in appendix 5 Based on the result of research which have been presented above, it can be conclude the process of English learning in Hubulo Islamic boarding school was doing by formal and informal. The formal is doing in the school/class room, and informal is doing in environment of boarding with some language activities that make by language section. 4.2 Factors influences of English learning at Hubulo Islamic boarding school There are some factors influence English learning at Hubulo islamic boarding school: 1. Beside that number 6 about learning facility which is conducted the process of English learning at Hubulo Islamic boarding school. In this number, many students choose the answer Yes. It is showing to us the minim of learning facility in Hubulo Islamic boarding school. The next is to the questions number 7 and 8 which have same percentage, that is 96% the students choose the answer Yes, and only 4% that choose the answer No. It means that the English learning in class room and English learning in boarding environment can improved the students English ability at Hubulo Islamic boarding school. 7 2. Motivation Factor Besides indicator of environment, motivation also has influence to the process of English learning at Hubulo Islamic boarding school. The following table will be present the indicator of motivations percentage: Table 2 The Interview Format of The Motivations Indicator NO Questions Are there any rules which order you to use using English? The process of English learning at Hubulo Islamic boarding school consists of two. There are formal and informal. In the formal, the students learn English in the process of teaching and learning in the school, although media of learning for English subject such LAB for language not yet complete. Then in informal, the students get guidance of English learning in boarding environment. There are some factors influences English learning in Hubulo Islamic school, such as environment factor, motivation factor, and teacher factor. Environment factor consists of formal and informal environment, but informal environment more dominant which influence of English learning at Hubulo
Islamic boarding school. Why the formal environment not really influence to the English learning at Hubulo Islamic boarding school? Because in the formal environment, the students study English just two meetings in one week. While in informal environment, the students get guidance to learn English during two weeks based on schedule. This research shows that the informal environment is more influence of language learning than formal environment, especially to the English learning. That is supported by Browns theory (2008:43) which stated that the efficiency and success of the language learning is pointed by the environment itself, where the child lives Besides environment factor, motivation was much influenced to improve the students ability in English. The motivation in this research can be described by some activities. There are English speech, vocabulary, and conversation. The all activities were conducted by rules of students Hubulo and punishment for them. The last is teacher factor. In this research, the role of teacher to improve students ability in English learning was doing by some method. During process of English learning, the teacher used discussion method and give opportunity to the students to participate. Then the teacher also used media of learning, likes LCD, Video, card, that can give stimulus to their imagination. All factors that were presented above are the factors which influence English learning at Hubulo Islamic boarding school, but motivation is dominant factor which influence to improvement students ability in English. It can be
presented by high percentage value; it is 100% of students that say Yes for all answer of every question in motivation indicator. On the other side, the researcher found some kinds of external motivation factors which different with Browns theory. Such as the rules in Hubulo islamic boarding school, punishment, and the English activities. It is different with Browns theory who stated extrinsic motivation is the motivation from out self, likes prize, money, and score in the exam. It is commonly, the extrinsic motivation to avoid the punishment (Brown, 2007, p.188).
