1 KRS PLACEMENT INFORMATION & APPLICATION PACKAGE The following information package contains the application forms for the Kedesh Rehabilitation Services (KRS) Student Placement. A KRS student placement provides valuable practical experience for individuals wishing to gain experience in the psychology field. Places in the placement programme are competitive. Upon receipt of your application, individuals will be selected for an interview. Interviews will be held during the week beginning Monday 1 st December. If successful in the interview process, applicants must attend 4 days of orientation training before they can commence with the service. Please ensure you can attend the training times prior to completing your application. 3 OVERVIEW OF KRS Kedesh Rehabilitation Services (KRS) is a community-based charity organisation established to assist individuals with substance misuse or gambling problems. The organisation has been in operation since 1975, providing the largest drug and alcohol residential rehabilitation service within the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions. The service is partially funded through Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District (ISLHD) and is managed by a Board of Directors made up of local community members. KRS works in partnership with community-based stakeholders, other drug and alcohol agencies and ISLHD to provide an innovative statewide drug, alcohol and gambling dependency treatment service. KRS has well-established links with the University of Wollongong and local TAFE facilities. KRS provides both a 6 month, and 1-year Student Placement for students wishing to develop skills to work within the Drug and Alcohol field. This involves training individuals from a variety of disciplines including Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Welfare and Youth Work. KRS completed a Quality Management review in July 2010 and maintains accreditation through The Australian Council of Healthcare Standards, ACHS. Kedesh Rehabilitation Services consists of a number of integrated treatment services: KEDESH ADULT PROGRAMME Caters for clients 18 years and over and offers 14 male and 8 female beds Has been in operation since week programme (can be altered depending on client needs) Approx 70% of clients are classified as dual diagnosis KEDESH ADOLESCENT PROGRAMME (KAP) KAP commenced in 2000 Adolescent Rehabilitation Service catering for individuals aged 16 years and over Accepts clients directly from detention facilities FAMILY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM Commenced 1999 Offers family intervention services to assist and support parents, partners and significant others of individuals with a substance abuse issue KRS PLACEMENT PACKAGE 2014 Page 3 of 9
4 PHOENIX TREATMENT FACILITY MANLY KRS operates a 10 bed facility in the grounds of Manly Hospital. The facility commenced operation in February 2011 KRS students have the opportunity to gain experience across all KRS facilities TREATMENT PROVIDED Group work psycho-educational and interpersonal Individual Counselling and tailored treatment plans collaboratively developed with the client Harm minimisation education (HEP C, HIV, safe using, STI s) Health Promotion (activities, nutrition) and Individual Case management Family Therapy OUTLINE OF THE PLACEMENT Stage One: Recruitment Placement Part A and Induction Recruitment Placement Part A Students are selected on the basis of a review of written applications and interviews The placement is a voluntary position Placement Part A Students are required to attend 14 hours per week for 25 weeks totalling 350 hours. This may include day, evening or weekend shifts depending upon availability and the roster. In addition a 2 hours training session will be conducted on a weekly basis. These sessions will be comprised of set training, formal feedback sessions and supervision (totalling 72 hrs over six months) 80% attendance is required. Students receive a performance grading of unsatisfactory/satisfactory and may apply for six (6) credit points. Induction Training Students are taken through Orientation (four days training). Orientation training covers the essential policy and procedure necessary to be on KRS premises Stage Two: Placement Part A - Core Training Involves on-site training with the admissions officer, clinical staff and support staff and includes attendance of the groups and activities run at KRS. During this stage the student learns how to: KRS PLACEMENT PACKAGE 2014 Page 4 of 9
5 assist clients to access the programme, facilitate phone assessments and assisting with the reports required for the clients admission implement the Policies and Procedures of KRS and work effectively with clients and staff Stage Three: Placement Part A - Group facilitation Students will have the opportunity to co-facilitate and then facilitate groups. During this stage and throughout the placement, students learn: the purpose and benefits of group therapy and underlying dynamics of therapeutic group-work to develop a clear understanding of the group components of the programme at KRS to deliver a number of group modules to the clients of KRS Stage Four: Placement Part A - Case Management Students will be given the opportunity to assist in the Case Management of clients and work in collaboration with the Clients Counsellor. During this stage, students will learn how to: establish a positive therapeutic alliance with the client conduct a needs assessment with a client and work collaboratively to identify goals and tasks assess a client s progress towards their goals and assist with problem solving, re-evaluation of goals and assist in Case conferencing End of Placement Part A Stage Five: Recruitment Placement Part B and Counselling Recruitment Placement Part B Students are selected on the basis of a review of written applications, past performance and interviews. It is a pre-requisite that students complete Placement Part A at a satisfactory level. The placement is a voluntary position Students are required to attend 14 hours per week for 25 weeks totalling 350 hours. This may include day, evening or weekend shifts depending upon availability and the roster. In addition a 2 hour training session will be conducted on a weekly basis. These sessions will be comprised of set training, formal feedback sessions and supervision (totalling 50 hours over six months) 80% attendance is required. Students receive a performance grading of unsatisfactory/satisfactory and may apply for six (6) credit points. KRS PLACEMENT PACKAGE 2014 Page 5 of 9
6 Counselling Students will be given the opportunity to move onto Individual Counselling. During this stage students will be exposed to and learn: general counselling skills and administration and scoring of assessments initial history taking interview including case conceptualisation and treatment planning establishing positive therapeutic alliance with clients how to work collaboratively with clients to establish counselling goals and set tasks how to work with clients presenting with dual diagnosis issues with evidence based practice how to liaise and consult with other professionals and services involved in caring for the client KRS PLACEMENT PACKAGE 2014 Page 6 of 9
