Faculty & staff committed to helping your student be successful. USCL Success Rate: 64.8% (2013) Success is a GROUP effort, but has to start with your STUDENT.

7 Some of the Things I Tell Students Their first day of a four year journey into ignorance and first day of adulthood. FERPA (Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act). REALITY CHECK Odds are not in their favor. Warn them about common mistakes. Must be ready to work harder than ever before, and to make use of resources for success.

10 So What Can Parents Do? Keep open lines of communication with your student. ASK THEM QUESTIONS. Lay the groundwork for a new kind of relationship with your student more toward the role of mentor Key to effective mentoring active & reflective listening; Listen without fixing

Remind your student that preparing for the exam begins on DAY ONE of classes. Encourage your student to make use of the resources available at USCL.

16 TRiO Programs: OSP Opportunity Scholars Program (OSP) is a federal funded program designed to assist first generation students entering college. Participation is FREE for qualified students Limited space each semester Services include: Academic Advising Career Counseling Financial Aid Counseling Transfer Counseling The TRiO Learning Resource Center (LRC)is located in Medford Library.

25 LIFE Scholarship: Financial Aid Must maintain 3.0 LIFE GPA (includes all courses) Must earn 30 hours per academic year 2 Years Eligibility at USCL (consecutive) 4 Years total Eligibility (consecutive) Science & Math Majors: Earn 14 hours of Science and Math courses in Freshman year Get a $2500 bonus when you transfer to a 4 year program

26 Financial Aid Scholarships USCL Scholarships: Requirements: 3.0 GPA Freshmen applications were due February 1 st Continuing Applications due April 1 st of each year. Private Scholarships:

27 Federal Grants: Financial Aid Pell Grant Usually for Family Income <$50k Amount based on EFC and enrollment status $598 - $5815 annually (2 full-time semesters) SEOG Usually for Family Income <$24k Awarded to needy students Must have a 0 EFC and Pell First-come, first-serve

28 State Grants: Financial Aid South Carolina Need Based Grant Must be SC Resident Awarded to Needy students First-Come, First-Serve Up to $2500 per year Must maintain a 2.0 GPA

29 Financial Aid Lottery Tuition Assistance Program (LTAP) Must be a SC Resident for at least 1 year No income requirements but Must file a FAFSA Up to $2400 per year ($100 per credit hour) Limited to Tuition remaining after federal and state grants and scholarships Cannot be receiving the LIFE Scholarship Must accept on SSC and complete a paper form Must maintain a 2.0 USC GPA

35 Withdrawing from Classes Drop: Before end of Drop/Add will affect financial aid eligibility Drop: After Drop/Add won t reduce current aid but could affect SAP and other awards (like LIFE) Withdraw: dropping ALL classes; if done before 60% [Oct 30 th ] of term ended, student WILL owe money back to aid programs Don t drop or withdraw without talking to Financial Aid first!

36 FERPA Family Education Rights and Privacy Act Students 18 or older are adults Educational information (including financial aid) is protected. Student must sign a release to grant parents access to their information. A form is available in Admissions and Financial Aid.

Without this information, you will be automatically be charged the out-of-state rates. If the information submitted is insufficient to make a determination, then additional information may be requested to verify your residency.

43 South Carolina Residency To pay in-state tuition, all South Carolina residents must complete the South Carolina Residency Certification Form. 44 Payment Plan Available online through SSC or in person at the Business Office. Covers tuition and fees. A N.R $75.00 processing fee will be added. First year Freshmen automatically qualify. Four payments per semester. A $ fee is applied when the payment is late. Contact the Business Office to learn more.

45 Partial Payments The Business Office will accept partial payments from parents, grandparents, and others. All partial payments are by the first of class.you may begin making these payments as soon as your bill is available on SSC.

46 Self Service Carolina (my.sc.edu) o Discover; o Visa o MasterCard; o American Express; or, Paying Online o E-Check using a checking or savings account. A 2.5 percent convenience fee is added to each credit card transaction. There is no fee when paying by e-check.

47 Authorized Users You can authorize others, such as parents, grandparents, or employers access to your account information. They will have the ability to submit whole or partial payments, access tax statements, and view payment history.

49 My Account From this screen, you can view the account activity and pay the bill by clicking on Make a Payment.

50 SSC has the option of sending an ebill on a monthly basis. The ebill will show tuition and academic fees along with other charges such as a financial aid refund that might be owed. ebills

51 Direct Deposit We encourage you to have refunds deposited into your bank account using direct deposit. To set up direct deposit, complete the direct deposit bank account section in SSC, under the erefunds section. If you are expecting a refund, deposits should begin to appear within 2-3 business days after the release of refunds from the Bursar s office in Columbia (dates pending). Refunds can also be issued in the form of a paper check and mailed, but this may take an additional 7 business days. Always update your address throughout your academic career.
