Academic instruction takes place in a small, structured, nurturing setting. Classes average six to eight students and are instructed by teachers who are certified in a specific subject area, in special education, or both. At the high school level, instruction is geared toward college prep with modifications made for students who have specific learning disabilities or who function below grade level. Elementary classes are small heavily staffed, and serve multiple grade levels. Our younger students' ability to function academically is more diverse and can range from remedial to grade level and above. Teachers in both programs are supported by mental health professionals and behavioral specialists. Emphasis is placed on providing a positive learning experience in a safe school environmentwhile resolving major emotional and psychiatric issues which are obstacles to student learning, growing and returning to their home districts. The mission is to return students to traditional classrooms following 3-5 years of study at The Pilot School. Mastery of foundation skills, age appropriate independence and problem-solving/coping is systemic to the philosophy. Reading, writing, listening, speaking, spelling, mathematics, science, social studies, art music, library, technology, physical education adaptive physical education, onsite aquatics, guidance counseling, and flex clubs round out the curriculum.
