Mobile Cloud Computing: Survey & Discussion Jianting Yue Sep 27,
Outline Lead-in Definition Main Functions Architecture Computation Offloading: an example Challenges Potential Ideas Summary 2
3 Picture from Lead-in: Cellphone Battery Life Limited battery life is: The most challenging design issues for mobile devices [1], and The biggest complaint for smart phones [2].
Mobile Devices are Resource-Poor A limited supply of resources in: Energy more transistors, processor clock, size&weight Computation CPU & memory & extensive app Storage Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC)! [3] 4
Definition of MCC Mobile Cloud Computing at its simplest, refers to an infrastructure where both the data storage and the data processing happen outside of the mobile device. Mobile cloud applications move the computing power and data storage away from mobile phones and into the cloud, bringing applications and mobile computing to not just smart phone users but a much broader range of mobile subscribers. [4] Mobile cloud computing as an integration of cloud computing technology with mobile devices to make the mobile devices resource-full in terms of computational power, memory, storage, energy, and context awareness. [5] 5
Main Functions Storage Backup Store files, messages, etc in cloud Dropbox Simple Storage Service (S3) by Amazon icloud by Apple Computation Offloading Picasa by Google Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) by Amazon 6
Architecture [5] Centralized Cloud: Mobile devices obtain services from remote centralized cloud infrastructure via backbone.[6] 7
Cloudlet A resource-rich server that has Internet access and is well connected to mobile devices via high-speed one-hop LAN. [6] 8
Ad Hoc Mobile Cloud Neighboring mobile devices are pooled together for resource sharing. Process tasks in a distributed and collaborative fashion on all mobile devices. [6] Handle tasks by a particular mobile device that acts as a server. (nodes with stable Internet access) 9
Computation Offloading Cloud vendors provide computing cycles. Mobile users use these cycles to reduce the amounts of computation on mobile systems and save energy. [2] 10
An Example (1) C: instructions required by a computation M: speed of the mobile device (instruction per second) S: speed of the cloud server (instruction per second) D: data exchanged between the cloud server and the mobile device B: bandwidth [2] 11
An Example (2) : power for mobile device s computing : power for being idle : power for sending and receiving data The amount of energy saved is: [2] 12
An Example (3) Suppose, we then have Energy is saved if the above equation is positive. [2] 13
Energy-optimal Execution A recent work [3] investigates how to optimally execute mobile application in the mobile device or offloading to the cloud. [3] W. Zhang et al, Energy-optimal mobile cloud computing under stochastic wireless channel, TWC,
Motivations: A Brief Summary To address the never ending need of increasing the processing power and battery life time of mobile devices; To cope with the increasing need on diverse application services for mobile users with low-end devices; To maximize resource sharing and usage of existing cloud infrastructures and resources by providing efficient mobile connectivity to mobile users; To eliminate existing resource shortage issues and limitations of current mobile devices by connecting to unlimited cloud application services [7] 15
Example in Retrospect For offloading to break-even: is the minimum bandwidth required to save energy. [2] M=400, F=160, Pc=0.9W, Pi=0.3W, Ptr=1.3W. 16
Several Challenges Bandwidth utilization Latency Privacy Security Reliability Platform 17
Bandwidth Utilization Bandwidth is limited in wireless networks. Bandwidth largely influences latency. Tradeoff between bandwidth utilization and latency. 18
Latency Access to centralized cloud incurs long latency due to WAN delays. Real-time applications (e.g. online games) have strict requirements. User experience. [6] 19
WAN Latency Is Unlikely to Improve Bandwidth Firewalls and overlay networks increase the software path length that packets must traverse. A common energy-saving technique is to turn on the mobile device s transceiver only for short periods of time, which increases average end-to-end packet latency and jitter. [8] 20
Privacy Encryption and steganography consume energy. Location-based navigation to the cloud unintentionally tracks the mobile user. Different privacy protection law and policy among countries. [6] 21
Security Bug and security loophole in the cloud Malware Third party vendors Also encryption and steganography [6] 22
Reliability Wireless network connectivity is not everywhere, e.g. faraway national park, but most data and services are in the cloud. Heterogeneous network: seamless handoff among macro, pico, femto, Wi-Fi, etc. Access Scheme: always-on or on-demand connectivity? 23
Platform Various platforms: Android, ios, Mobile OS Programming language: ios does not support Java. ios application model has less support for computational offloading than Android. [7] 24
Hotspots Energy-save mechanism Energy and speed tradeoff Offloading decision Cell association Other potential ideas 25
Potential Ideas (1) Involvement of resource allocation and admission control: Triggered by cloud traffic Power, bandwidth, and backhaul Pricing Over-the-top (OTT) contents 26
Potential Ideas (2) Ad hoc mobile cloud vs device-to-device (D2D) communication 27
Potential Ideas (3) Combined with wireless body area network (WBAN) SINR is the priority for the sake of health emergency. 28
Potential Ideas (4) Two functions of Cloudlet: Internet and Cloud Similar with hybrid access of femtocell 29
Summary Mobile Cloud Computing Benefits: computation offloading, storage backup, energy saving Several challenges needs improvement Some potential ideas 30
