1 IBM Software Brochure Build more and grow more with Cloudant DBaaS Next generation data management designed for Web, mobile, and the Internet of things

2 Build more and grow more with Cloudant DBaaS New opportunities equal new data challenges Immediate and continuous access to data is no longer a luxury; it is a requirement. Today s applications are expected to run 24x7 and manage a variety of structured and unstructured data accessed by massive global networks of users, devices, sensors, vehicles and Internet-enabled goods. The need for scalable and globally accessible data has led to the rise of NoSQL technology as a practical alternative to relational databases. However, as the need for data access continually expands to the network edge, most databases are still grounded in a central data center. IT budget killers such as moving databases to more powerful hardware, or bigger clusters, and constantly re-designing them in order to perform adequately, can be extremely costly and time consuming. Important planning considerations regarding the cost, scalability, and availability of your data layer now, will likely have a significant impact on the ROI of your data layer. What data management choices are there? Do it yourself (DIY) vs. Hosted vs. Managed There are three primary options to choose from when it comes to managing your database. Each delivers different benefits, and picking the right technique requires careful analysis of a data layer s requirements and goals. Do it yourself (DIY) The enterprise database world is traditionally managed on site. Even organizations that are heavy users of cloud services often keep their databases on site, to avoid getting bitten by disk IO. These DIY enterprises probably own racks of servers and employ teams to make it all work. Hosted Companies that do not want to build a wealth of database management can leave the hard work to others and rent a hosted service. However, while the service may be hosted, advanced database knowledge and continual upkeep is required to help ensure data flows and scales appropriately. Managed Growth may lead to the managed option being cheaper than DIY or hosted. If the company moves onto another continent, they may need to duplicate the servers and expertise, and work on replicating the data. The work may be more expensive than handing over the data cluster to a specialist management company. This may lead a company to take care of only the hosting or utilize another to handle everything from tuning to development advice. What about the cloud? We have entered an era where high-speed Internet access is universal, milliseconds matter, and nearly all software developers work in a connected state while actively developing. Why can t databases follow suit? This provides an opportunity to leverage the cloud for things that historically would have been done locally. By moving the data and management to the cloud, it is easier for users to work across multiple data sources and scale in ways that were previously challenging. Leveraging the cloud helps enable users to scale at a moments notice, help ensure higher durability and handle updates and maintenance without the need to purchase more hardware or hire more staff. 2

3 IBM Software What is DBaaS? Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) solutions help enable you to buy into a data management Service Level Agreement (SLA) instead of merely buying into a database technology. This greatly simplifies application development and delivery. Like other cloud services, DBaaS can represent shorter sales cycles, help reduce revenue startup costs, and, best of all, more customers. We are already seeing DBaaS become validated as the driving force in the adoption of NoSQL, with the DBaaS market expected to grow from 22.1 percent of NoSQL revenue today, to 61.2 percent in 2016, according to 451 Research. 1 Organizations of any size can potentially benefit from being able to outsource and consolidate their database management tasks on a standardized and optimized platform. By its very nature, DBaaS provides agile and efficient database services that can support a variety of needs. Its inherent elasticity makes it easy to scale up to handle and increase in demand or scale down when that demand has subsided. Not all DBaaS are created equal It must be reiterated that a DBaaS usually represents only part of a solution. Customers stay with their solution providers not only because of the products they have been sold, but also because of the services provided. A DBaaS system by itself does not offer face-to-face visits or personal customer relationships or ongoing support. That is where solution providers come in. They help customers select the right solution, plan integration and migration strategies, and then carry them out. A massively scalable, fully-managed NoSQL database as a service: Cloudant Cloudant combines the benefits of DBaaS with 24x7 expert management. As a fully-managed NoSQL database service, Cloudant frees web and mobile developers from the time, cost, and worry associated with database administration, architecture and hardware. This helps enable users to free themselves from time and worries associated with data management and stay focused on the development of new apps. Cloudant DBaas was born and raised in the cloud era. It was built to be elastic, highly available, and to manage popular web and mobile data types like JSON, Booleans and arrays. Cloudant was created by combining the best open source code and thought leadership into an innovative DBaaS that powers some of the biggest web and mobile apps in the world. Customers come to Cloudant for its features, but stay for the fully-managed service. The combination of both helps to enable: Massive scalability Making the right decision about the scalability of your data now will help enable you to avoid the pitfalls many organizations who continue to sink exorbitant amounts of time, money, and resources in: Time-consuming and expensive hardware upgrades. Manually sharding databases into bigger server clusters. Endless schema changes to accommodate new business needs. Continuous infrastructure maintenance and optimization. We agree, your time and money could be better spent. 3

4 Build more and grow more with Cloudant DBaaS How will our data grow with our aggressive business plan? How will our servers handle spikes of users when our app is being featured in the Appstore? Are critical resources better spent elsewhere than on managing our own infrastructure? Cloudant DBaas helps to eliminate the risk, cost, and distractions of database scalability, helping to enable you to regain valuable time, and help your applications to scale larger and remain consistently available to users worldwide. High availability High availability is on many application development and IT roadmaps, but it is really difficult to implement, harder to upkeep, and easy to put on the back burner. Do not wait until a hard disk crashes and the data in your caching layer is lost forever. Ensuring data is highly available means: Data availability is not interrupted by server or data center failures. Data is available to remote or mobile users even if a network connection is not. Regular maintenance does not equal regular downtime. Cloudant DBaas stores data in triplicate across 3 separate servers and automatically handles the sharding and rebalancing of that data so your apps and business are always running. Secure infrastructure Integrated encryption and a multitude of security features ensure your data stays secure and protected. Protecting application data for large-scale web and mobile apps can be complex; especially with distributed and NoSQL databases. Just as the fully managed Cloudant DBaaS removes the overhead of keeping your database running and growing non-stop, it also helps ensure your data stays secure and protected. Can you imagine backing up a live, 100-node database cluster that spans multiple data centers? Cloudant DBaas automates tough big-data security challenges like these, and continues to lead the way in NoSQL and DBaaS security innovation. Fully-managed service As your business continues to grow, the Support database workload Services continues to grow along with it. Accordingly, Help Desk/Call you will Center require new expertise just to keep pace with the modern Process renaissance Support in database software, hardware, and design Recruitment possibilities. Technology But that is just the beginning. Keeping these new systems Support maintained Approval Facilitation and up to date is another story altogether. Client Status Updates Candidate Status Updates This complexity results in the loss of precious development Referral Program Assistance time in order to handle database crises, and Event runs Planning the risk of losing uptime, customers, data, revenues and profit. Who uses Cloudant DBaas? Companies of all sizes use Cloudant DBaas to manage data for large or fast-growing web and mobile apps in ecommerce, on-line education, gaming, financial services, healthcare, transportation networking, and other industries. Cloudant DBaas is best suited for applications that require an operational data store to handle a massively concurrent mix of low-latency reads and writes. Its data replication and synchronization technology also enables continuous data availability, as well as off-line app usage for mobile or remote users. Getting started with Cloudant Cloudant is available as a fully managed NoSQL database as a service (DBaaS) for fast, turnkey provisioning, and worry-free data management. It is also available as Cloudant Local, which puts the power of the Cloudant DBaaS in the privacy of your data centers. You can even connect Cloudant Local and Cloudant Managed DBaaS databases together to form hybrid cloud databases for the greatest balance of cloud cost, reach, performance, and compliance control.
