4 HIGHLIGHTS FALL 2006 Final Degree-Credit Enrollment New York State enrolled 1,153,406 students in its 271 colleges regulated by the Board of Regents. Total enrollment this year increased 0.9%. 80.3% of all students enrolled as undergraduates. Graduate students decreased slightly to 17% of the total, while first professional students remained at 2.7%. 1,000, , ,000 Total Enrollment, Fall ,195 Undergraduate, 926,244 SUNY enrolled 36.3% of all students, while CUNY enrolled 19.6%, independent colleges 40.1%, and proprietary colleges 4.0% % of undergraduates enrolled at four-year and higher institutions. 28.7% of the group enrolled at SUNY, 19.7% at CUNY, 48.1% at independent and 3.5% at proprietary colleges. 18.2% of all graduate students enrolled in SUNY, 14.7% in CUNY, 66.2% in independent colleges and 0.8% in proprietary colleges. Undergraduate enrollment rose 1.9 % in four-year, and decreased 0.7%, in two-year colleges. SUNY, CUNY and the independent sector slightly increased their shares of the undergraduates at two-year colleges, SUNY to 65.6%, CUNY to 24.4%, independent colleges to 2.2%. Graduate 2.8% 0.7% 1.7% First- Professional 3.6% time first-time undergraduates increased by 1.5%; part-time first-time decreased 3.8%. State University of New York (SUNY) growth in full-time first-time enrollment, up by 3.2%, outpaced independent colleges, which decreased 0.1%. Growth in the City University of New York (CUNY) stepped up to 6.5% in this category, while full-time proprietary college enrollments decreased, falling 13.2%. time graduate enrollment at SUNY grew 9.5%, CUNY 2.6%, independent colleges.8 percent and proprietary 14.4%. Statewide, part-time graduate enrollment fell 2.5%. time graduate enrollment at independents decreased 0.5%. SUNY fell 11.2%, CUNY 2.1%. The only sector showing part-time growth was proprietary, with 32.1%. iv

This group includes all public and private colleges except the two federal academies (Merchant Marine Academy and West Point). SECTORS Public SUNY: State University of New York, including the statutory colleges at Cornell and Alfred Universities CUNY: City University of New York Private Independent: Not-for-profit Proprietary: For-profit DEGREE-CREDIT ENROLLMENT Number of students enrolled in courses for credit. Some duplication occurs, with students enrolled in more than one college counted twice. Note: Excelsior College awards credit earned elsewhere. This report counts Excelsior external degree-credit enrollees where they receive instruction. Beginning in 2005, it reports those who receive instruction through Excelsior under Excelsior. For Excelsior s external enrollment, call UNDERGRADUATE Enrolled in a 4- or 5-year bachelor's degree program, an associate's degree program, or a vocational or technical program below the baccalaureate level. FIRST-TIME UNDERGRADUATE An entering freshman who has never attended any college or other postsecondary institution. Includes students enrolled in the fall term who attended college for the first time in the prior summer term and students who entered with advanced standing (college credits earned before graduation from high school). FIRST-PROFESSIONAL STUDENT Enrolled in any of the following degree programs: Audiology (Au.D.),Chiropractic (D.C. or D.C.M.), Dentistry (D.D.S. or D.M.D.), Law (L.L.B., J.D.), Medicine (M.D.), Nursing (D.N.P.) Optometry (O.D.), Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), Pharmacy (Pharm.D.), Physical Therapy (D.P.T.), Podiatry (D.P.M., D.P., or Pod.D.), Theology (M.Div., M.H.L., B.D., or Ordination), Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M.).
