3 getting started Here s a handy guide to help make your fundraiser a phenomenal success! SETTING UP YOUR FUNDRAISING PAGE After registering for an online personal fundraising page, remember to keep a record of your username, password, and friendly URL. Feel free to write them in here to keep them handy. Username: Password: Friendly URL: You can share this friendly URL with your friends and family to receive online donations directly to your fundraising page. You will be able to track who donates and send online Thank You s all through your online portal. CUSTOMIZE YOUR FUNDRAISING PAGE The best way to get started is to upload a picture of yourself and a short bio encouraging those who visit your page to make a donation. To do that follow these directions: 1. Log into your fundraising page 2. Click on Enter My HQ (You will already be on this page once you log on) 3. Click on the Build/Edit My Webpage link on the far right Here you can edit your Friendly URL Upload a picture (JPG or PNG) Edit your bio (no character limit) 4. Remember to click Submit once finished to save your changes You can always view your personal webpage by click on the link under the main menu by clicking View Personal Page. 2

4 be social ANYONE WHO CREATES a fundraising page can post a link to his/ her Facebook page or tweet it out, so friends and family can make donations. All you have to do is log in and click on the icon or on the on your HQ and customize your own message to post. QUICK TIP Rewarding your donors with shout outs on social media is a great way to make them feel good about their contribution. 3

5 offline donations PLEASE CONVERT all cash to a check and have all checks made payable to Save the Children. Make sure to get credit for your checks! Here s how: Log into your fundraising page Click on Enter Offline Donations on the right hand side of your HQ Home Page Enter the Pledge Please send in checks with our offline donation form, which you can print and send to: Save the Children Attn: Gift Processing 501 Kings Highway East, Suite 400 Fairfield, CT, Your fundraising amount will be updated as soon as we receive the check at Headquarters. Distinct donor information is necessary. Using your address as a donor s will cause your records to get updated with the most recent data input under that . For this reason, please make sure to enter your donor s information as accurately as possible and to try and provide as much detail as possible (Name, Address, , Check # and Amount). 4

Now it s time to show them how amazing our work really is! The resources listed below host fantastic information and visuals for potential donors. 9 give meaning Soccer balls delight any child, anywhere. A real soccer ball brings joy and laughter and a sense of belonging to numerous children living in poverty. Educate a girl and brighten her future. For less than 20 cents per day, a girl can receive the books, learning materials and school access needed to learn and thrive. The results are life changing. Stock a library and leave a legacy to benefit U.S. children. Generations of children benefit from libraries full of high-quality publications selected for maximum learning potential. Cows provide thirst-quenching, nutritious milk Cows provide protein-rich milk that boosts nutrition, especially in children. Parents often sell surplus milk for profit. *Each gift is representative of resources, services or support provided by Save the Children to a program area in which we work, and may change due to environmental, programmatic and economic considerations. Your donations will be used to provide assistance where it is needed most within that program area or to address similar need. 8

10 fundraising ideas AUCTION OF PROMISES from landscaping and gardening to dog walking and snow shoveling, use your skills and services for auction, using the money pledged as a donation to Save the Children. BAKE SALES & FOOD SALES Break out your favorite recipe and cook for a cause! Consider selling treats for a special occasion or holiday. Pick a date and a location and make sure you have plates, napkins, storage bags and plastic wrap to package the goodies to-go. BALLROOM DANCING LESSONS The first step is talking to local dance instructors (unless you already have some you know personally) to see if they would be willing to donate their time for a series of lessons or for one longer event. Each participant would pay a donation to dance- and it s fun, good exercise and for people of any age! BIDDING FOR BLUE PLATE SPECIALS This is an interesting twist on the standard dinner fundraiser that can prove very entertaining. Have all attendees bring a single serving meal or dessert item, their checkbook, and their sense of fun- the trick is they will all be bidding for their dinner! Cover each meal so the participants can t see what they are bidding on, and let the fun begin. You have the option of starting the bidding at the same price point for each meal, or if you think it will drive the price up (and raise more funds as a result) you might want to reveal some of the meals during the bidding process. You might find a peanut butter sandwich going for $25 and a prime rib steak selling for $5. Just be sure to check for any potential food allergies before the bidding process starts. CELEBRATE WITH SAVE Birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and special occasions are a wonderful time to share your love for Save the Children with those close to you. Instead of gifts, ask people to make a charitable gift to Save the Children to celebrate your special day. CHURCH COLLECTION Talk to your parish community leaders about hosting a special collection on behalf of Save the Children. On the day of the collection, hand out Save the Children materials and give a short speech explaining to the congregation why Save the Children is important to you. 9

11 fundraising ideas BOTTLE COLLECTION If you live in a state that has a redemption value on bottles and cans you can raise money for Save the Children while going green! Set a collection day and spread the word that you are collecting cans and bottles to recycle and donate the proceeds to a great cause. It s a good idea to print out thank you flyers that you can hand out to your donors as well. DOG BAKERY When you are bored with the traditional bake sale, try this fun one on for size! Look for recipes online or check at your local bookstore or library for a dog treat cookbook. Collect cellophane bags and consider coming up with custom labels for your doggie treats. GARAGE SALE One person s junk can be another person s treasure! Organize a garage sale and you ll clean out your house and give back to the community at the same time. You can make the sale as small or large as you like, depending on the number of donated items and the possible locations for the sale including a school gymnasium, church or local community center. MAKE THE WORLD BETTER WITH A SWEATER Around the holidays or at your yearend party, wear your most Festive or Ugly holiday sweater, donate to participate and Spread the Holiday Joy! Together, with sweaters, we can make the world a better place - transforming children s lives and the future we all share. RESTAURANT FUNDRAISER Ask your favorite restaurants to host a Save the Children day and donate a percentage of the day s sales. Some chain restaurants that do these type of fundraising events are Applebees, Arbys, Boston Market, California Pizza Kitchen, Chilis, Chipole, Fuddruckers, Moe s Southwest Grill, Panda Express, Panera, Red Robin & TGIFriday s. RUN FOR KIDS Challenge your friends to get up and get active! Organizing a full marathon, half marathon or 5K race in honor of Save the Children is a fun and healthy event where everyone can be active, whether indoors or outdoors, to make a difference! TEXT TO DONATE Text SAVE to to donate $10 on your mobile phone. When you receive a text message back, reply YES and your gift will be added to your mobile phone bill or deducted from your prepaid balance. 10

12 shamisa s story BACK FROM THE BRINK Little Shamsia was on the brink of death when she was brought to a feeding center run by Save the Children in Niger, west Africa. Aged just one year, she was suffering from severe malnutrition, vomiting and diarrhea. Shamsia s mother was terrified her daughter wouldn t survive. I really thought Shamsia was going to die. But after I brought her to the clinic, she recovered within 28 days. I m so happy. I never believed it would be possible. HOW YOUR MONEY HELPS $30 can pay for a month s worth of life-saving food for a malnourished child like Shamisa JUST 28 DAYS LATER We saw a little girl brought back to life. Our health workers treated Shamsia, and she started to get better and put on weight. Now she s feeling well and she eats everything, says Shamsia s mother, Lantana. Every year 6.9 million children under five die needlessly. In the world s poorest countries, children are killed by illnesses we know how to prevent and treat, such as diarrhea and pneumonia. And every single day, thousands face starvation. They ll never get the chance to fulfil their potential. TOGETHER WE CAN STOP THIS. 13 promotion tips Press releases Journalists are always on the lookout for local people doing something exciting, so don t be afraid to get in contact! Include all the important information you want others to know about your event. The more interesting and unique your story, the more chance you ll get covered. Some Top Tips: Contact all your local press including newspapers, radio, TV stations The headline should attract attention Include - who, what, where, when and why Include an event description and why you want to raise money for Save the Children Include a personal connection or story about the event Keep it short and snappy Include key contact details, in case they need to ask you any questions Be clear if you want the general public to attend, and how they can get tickets etc You have two opportunities to be featured in your local press both before and after your event - so have someone at the event to take high-quality photos Getting the word out Advertise your event at work, school or university, in a newsletter, bulletin, or poster Tell your friends and relatives about your event through word of mouth, s or social media. Ask them to pass it on to their friends and colleagues too Mention your event in your signature. Link this to an online fundraising page Create a Facebook page for your event and invite your friends. Ask them to share this to invite others Tweet about your event, with a link to information about your event, an event picture or your online fundraising page & Like and post about your event on our Facebook page NOTE: Remember to thank everybody who donated, supported or featured your event after it s finished! It s always nice to include pictures and how much you ve raised. 12
