1 The Florida Society of the Sons of the American Revolution Fort Lauderdale Chapter Newsletter website: Fort Lauderdale Chapter Organized November 26, 1966 Volume 39 Number 6 Ft. Lauderdale Chapter SAR Minutes of 13 May 2006 by Ed Spencer The meeting was called to order by Chapter President Ted Duay who requested the Officers Reports. Treasurer Joe Motes presented the Treasurer s Report, indicating that the Chapter is doing well and that the 50/50 funding program had met its goal. The motion was made to accept the Treasurer s Report and it was seconded. The motion was passed with no dissenting vote. The Minutes of the past Chapter meeting were submitted by the Chapter Secretary, William E. Spencer. No corrections were noted to the Minutes. The floor was passed to Mrs. Opal R. Spencer, Senior President of Swamp Fox Society CAR who announced that the society continues to make progress in its growth in adding 4 new members for a total of 44. In addition one member, Mellissa Freer, has recently graduated from the U.S. Army boot camp. She also announced that the Florida State Society CAR s state project would be the Cracker Cattle, a breed that was originally brought to Florida by the Spanish and later escaped into the Florida wild. In the time period between escaping and the settling of Florida in the mid 1800 s, the cattle thrived due to their gene-stock that allowed them to become acclimated to the Florida heat and immune to insects. When settlers arrived they found the cattle running wild and also being raised by the local Indians, but the settlers who brought other breeds with them thought the cattle useless. Because of neglect, the Cracker Cattle breed almost became extinct. The purpose of CAR s Cracker Cattle program is to help the State of Florida raise awareness of this breed in an effort to preserve it. continued on page 7 FLSSAR President Lindsey Brock and Ft. He then presented Mrs. Opal Spencer, Senior President Swamp Fox CAR with a check for $ on behalf of the Fort Lauderdale Chapter SAR. Swamp Fox will use this donation for its historical and patriotic youth activities. Vice President Jim Lohmeyer reminded the group that one of our speakers, Col Gray was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen. He then announced that one of the airmen had previously passed away. Compatriot Lohmeyer then reminded the group that we will be having a joint meeting with the Lighthouse Point DAR and the Swamp Fox CAR at the Lighthouse Point Yacht Club on December 2, 2006 and that spouses are welcome to attend. President Ted Duay announced that SAR Name Tags are still available to order, either magnetic or clip on. To request one, please contact either Ted or Debbie Duay. Ted then announced that the National Society SAR would be holding its National Congress in Dallas, Texas in July. He then inducted new member, Dusty Dunn into the Fort Lauderdale Chapter SAR. There being no further business before the Chapter, President Ted Duay introduced the guest speaker, Debbie Duay who presented a talk about other lineage societies. Many links exists between lineage societies, but not all societies are easy to join given the stringent documentation requirements. Our revolutionary patriot ancestors made us eligible to join the SAR. Several other lineage societies have other requirements such as the Flagon and Trencher: Descendants of Colonial Tavern Keepers. Though many of our ancestors frequented these establishments, few actually owned them. Flagon and Trencher is open to anyone who can prove direct descent from an ancestor who operated a tavern or inn or had a license to sell spirituous liquors in any of the thirteen colonies prior to July 4, Another society, The Baronial Order of the Magna Charta, requires that one be a descendant of one of twenty-five Magna Charta Surety Barons, individuals responsible to insure that King John lived up to the requirements set forth in the Magna Charta, or a descendant of Non-Surety supporters in sympathy with the Magna Charta, descendants of William III d Aubigny, Hubert de Burgh, Alan of Galloway, William Marshall, Sr. and William IV de Warenne. The Order of Founders and Patriots of America (for men) is the toughest of the bunch due to its direct paternal lineage requirements with only a few deviations. The paternal line used must include a Founder ancestor who arrived in one of the thirteen colonies prior to May 13, 1657 as well as an intermediate ancestor in the same line who was a Revolutionary War patriot. Since SAR requires us to prove linage to patriot ancestors, once these links are established, it only becomes a matter of establishing the link from that ancestor to an eligible ancestor for one to become a member of other lineage societies. For further information on other lineage societies, contact Ted or Debbie Duay. There being no further business before the Chapter, President Ted Duay adjourned the meeting. Treasurer Joe Motes presented a check for $200 to Opal Spencer for the CAR Swamp Fox Society during the May 13th meeting. Debbie Duay is presented with a gift after speaking at the Summer FLSSAR BOM.

8 PAGE 8 Cmdr Alan Starr received a check for $200 on behalf of the Navy Sea Cadets from our Chapter, persented by Treasurer Joe Motes. Joe Motes presents the Good Citizenship Award to Michael Crowley from the Boca Raton Civil Air Patrol. Joe Motes presents the Good Citizenship Award to Brandon Wasicsko from the Fort Lauderdale Navy Sea Cadets Joe Motes presents the Good Citizenship Award to Ali Hamidani from the Boca Raton Civil Air Patrol. Eagle Scout Awards Eagle Scout certificates were awarded to Robert F. Villegas of Troop 183, Eric Smith Norman of Col Dennis Teitge, ROTC Commander presents the JROTC Award to Nicole Cain from Everglades High School on behalf of Joe Motes. Troop 519, and to Michael Spencer, Robert and Ryan Faulstick of Troop 397.

9 PAGE 9 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Dear Compatriots: I hope that everyone had an enjoyable summer! In July, I had the pleasure of attending the 116th SAR National Congress held in Dallas, Texas. Between compatriots and guests, there were over 400 people in attendance. The national Rumbaugh Orations Contest was truly impressive given the high level of students that participated in the event. I attended many of the Congress business meetings and got a taste of how thing are done at the national level. A couple of new members were inducted during the Congress, including Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. who is the Director of African-American Research at Harvard University. I was familiar with Dr. Gates from watching his PBS documentary on African-American genealogy that aired in February. PBS was there recording the event and parts of the Congress will air on PBS at a future date. Next year s Congress will be held in Williamsburg, VA and I would encourage everyone to attend. Please consider contributing to this fund, if you are able, when you send in your dues payment. I look forward to seeing everyone at the September meeting. Respectfully, Ted Duay, President National SAR Color Guard There are a number of items of interest that relate to our chapter: We have a number of new members to induct into our chapter. Nominations for new chapter officers for 2007 will occur in October with elections at our November meeting. If you have an interest in serving our chapter, please consider running for a position. Our meeting location, the Flaming Pit, is under new management and has raised the prices of our luncheons, which will now be $15.00 per person. This is still a bargain given the free parking and free meeting room that is provided to our chapter. With this newsletter, you will receive your dues notice for Please consider paying this early as our chapter receives a rebate from the Florida Society SAR if we submit our dues early. Our chapter has a trust fund of approximately $11,000. The trust fund was set up many years ago and provides income, if needed, to our chapter to fund operating activities. Florida Rumbaugh Orations Contestant, Craig Zyburo
