Universal Design Research on Boarding and Using Busses Edward Steinfeld Victor Paquet James Lenker Clive D Souza Piyush Bareria June 11-13, UD 2012, Oslo

RERC-APT Research and develop methods to enhance the design and evaluation of accessible transportation equipment, information services, and physical environments Guiding Principles Universal design practices Participatory approach to research Industry partnerships Field and Laboratory Research Studies

Human Performance Evaluations Laboratory Evaluation of Low Floor Bus Features Ramp Slopes On-board Fare Payment Seating Configurations

Six Key User Groups Manual and powered wheeled mobility device users Scooter users Adults with visual impairments Users of ambulation aid Adults who do not use mobility aids

Human Performance Measures Task completion time Space requirements 3-D body motion analysis Ratings of physical exertion and task difficulty Performance comparisons between individuals and across groups

Ramp Slopes

Ramp Slopes 1:12 1:6 1:8 1:4

Sample

Ascent Time ANOVA: Main effects for user group (p<.001) & slope (p=.027). Non-significant interaction

Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE) ANOVA: Main effects for user group (p<.001) and slope (p<.001). Non significant interaction

Difficulty Rating Scale (DRS) ANOVA: Main effects for user group (p<.001) and slope (p<.001). Non-significant interaction

Comparison of Ascent vs. Descent ANOVA: Main effect for user group (p<.001). Non-significant effect for slope (p=.707). Non-significant interaction

Discussion: Ramp slopes Ascent times suggest that 1:8 might be too steep for manual WC users and ambulation aid users. Ramp slopes of 1:4 and 1:6 were unacceptable to most participants. Power WC users, individuals with VI, and ambulation aids users rated descent more difficult than ascent at 1:4 and 1:6.

Key Findings 1:4 and 1:6 slopes are too steep. 1:4 9 (33%) could not complete 1:6 4 (14.8%) could not complete 1:8 1 (3.7%) could not complete 1:12 all completed Descending ramps is challenging for some groups Participants expressed concerns about using the ramp in winter Correlations among RPE, DRS, and ARS reinforce the validity of these scales

On-board Fare Payment

Methodology Fare payment method 3 conditions floor-mounted (coin fare) dashboard mounted (coin fare) dashboard mounted (proximity swipe card) Maneuvering clearance 3 conditions aisle width between front wheel-wells: 34 in., 36 in., 38 in.

Manual Wheelchair Users

Persons with visual impairment

Example Findings Quicker boarding times across designs Floor /dashboard > swipe card Floor-mounted fare-box design Space constraint for wheeled mobility users Easier to detect by cane users Dashboard-mounted Proximity cards over coin Greater % of task completion

Seating Configurations

Study Participants (n=41) Diverse ambulation abilities Users of walking aids were older than those without walking aids Most participants were frequent public transit users Walking aid users reported greater ambulation difficulties Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Public Transportation

Low Crowding User Preferences Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Public Transportation

High Crowding User Preferences Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Public Transportation

Median Boarding Times (sec.) Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Public Transportation

Conclusions Environment design impacted performance Varied by user abilities Crowding (system throughput!) Space requirements for walking aid users Longitudinal (side-facing) seats preferred, legroom Storage space for walkers a concern Walkers often left in the aisle Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Public Transportation

Conclusions Assistive support during sitting & rising Understanding needs of all user groups Inclusive design Analysis of wheeled mobility & visually impaired users ongoing.. Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Accessible Public Transportation
