Institutional Effectiveness, Research and Planning Cerritos College Computer Information Systems Program Review Survey Results Aug. 28, 2015 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY In the Spring 2015 semester, the CIS department deployed a survey to the students in their program as a means to obtain feedback. There were 370 respondents; however, some questions did not have responses from all respondents and are noted in the results when that occurs. CIS students indicated that the program fits their educational needs, the faculty are engaged with students, and are current in their field. Over 80% of respondents indicated they are satisfied with the program. CIS students indicated they could benefit from cheaper textbooks, better wifi in the classrooms/labs; better chairs, and online tutoring for their online courses. DETAILED QUESTION ANALYSIS Students were asked how they learned about the CIS program at Cerritos College (n=367). Students were given the opportunity to respond with multiple answers to this question. The top three responses were the Online Schedule of Classes (40.60%), the Cerritos College catalog (39.51%), and the Cerritos College Counseling Center (25.34%).

The majority of the respondents (n= 365) have been attending college for 4 semesters (18.08%) or longer (47.67%). Students attending one semester (9.59%), two semesters (11.78%), and three semesters (12.88%) represented slightly over one third of the students responding.

The majority of students responding to the CIS survey are not currently working (42.15%); there are however, 14.60% student respondents working less than 20 hours; 23.14% work between hours per week; and 20.11% work full-time. In regards to when the students would prefer their courses to be offered, the prime time hours for the college were represented strongly (morning 46.17%; afternoon 39.07%). There is a strong interested in evening courses (after 5:30 p.m., 34.15%). Students also indicated an interest in online courses (38.25%), along with an interest in hybrid courses (26.50%) as options to attending courses on campus. This is further reflected in the following question, which asked what type of CIS classes: 53.28% indicated traditional classroom instruction; 19.67% indicated online; and 27.05% indicated hybrid.

When asked about their use of the CIS Computer labs, 33.33% indicated once per week; 27.60% indicated twice per week; 16.39% more than twice per week; with only 22.68% students indicating they never use it. Overwhelmingly, students responding to the survey own a computer: 95.88%, with only 4.12% indicating they do not own a computer.

Students were asked about their experience with CIS courses. Of these questions, students indicate that they find it difficult to study for online courses (19.78% Strongly Agree; 21.98% Agree; with 21.15% not having an opinion). Overwhelmingly, students indicate faculty in the CIS program are effective instructors, and are knowledgeable and current in their field, and they help students when students need extra help. Additionally, students indicated strong/agreement about the CIS program: CIS courses meet their needs, courses fit their schedules, have adequate classrooms and labs for a learning environment. Students also indicated that CIS tutors are helpful. Respondents to the survey were predominately high school graduates (78.63%), with some completing a certificate from a college/university (9.59%), some having an AA or AS degree (11.51%), currently enrolled in a 4-year college/university for a Bachelor s degree (7.85%), and others have already earned a Bachelor s degree or higher (5.21%). Only 2.47% of the respondents have not completed high school; and nearly 1% (n= 3 students) are concurrently enrolled in high school while attending Cerritos College.

Of the respondents to the survey, nearly 76% are seeking transfer to a four year college/university; 40.16% are seeking the AA or AS degree; 20.22% are seeking a certificate; and 28.42% are seeking to improve job skills and nearly 10% are pursuing industry certification (CCNA, A+, Network+, MCSE, etc.). Of the students with intentions to transfer to a four year college/university, 41.83% plan to pursue Computer Science, 15.78% plan to pursue Computer Engineering, and 55.01% have selected other degrees.

The certificates of achievement that the respondents indicated they would like to obtain are: Programmer (n= 195), Systems Analyst (n= 106), Network Administrator (n= 98), Microcomputer Specialist (n= 31), and iseries 400 Specialist (n= 10). Note: n s are reported for this question instead of percentages due to smaller response rate of this particular question. Demographics of the students responding to the survey: Age of the respondents (n=367), 29.97% are under 21; 31.61% are between years; 23.71% are between years; 8.99% are between 30-39; and the remaining 4.36% are between 40 and over 60 years. Slightly over 1% preferred to not answer. Gender of respondents (n=365), include 32.6% female and 64.11% male, with 3.29% preferring not to answer. Racial/ethnic group identity of respondents (n=367) includes 52.32% Hispanic, 17.17% Asian, 15.8% White, 9.26% African American, 7.63% Multi-racial, and 9.26% preferred to not answer. There were also 5.18% Filipino, 2.45% Korean, 2.45% Native American, and 1.63% Pacific Islander students responding to this survey question. Please see graph/chart on the following page.

Suggestions to improve the program provided by the respondents included (NA responses deleted): there must be a requirement for all online student to attend traditional students. Which would help use work together to figure out problems and help use. I would be nice to have the tests to be major programs in Java, or C++ instead of taking it on paper of writing the code. I personally think coding should not require the need to memorize since the computer science major a lot of time requires the search for a certain code such as HTML, CSS, JAVA, C++ and so on (Used Treehouse). I would think it would be better to have huge programs to create with all we have learned to show our skills in what we have learned that can not be simply looked up. Have video type lessons for the online classes. We need more tutors. Possibly offer more courses instead of the upper level courses once a year. Keep doing what you guys are doing, good job. Traditional is better than online... Instead of a once a week course, it would be better to have this course spread out twice a week. More class times Up-to-date software Nope everything was good. Offer more classes for better schedule availability. more classes More traditional classes/better times You should have enough CIS instructors. There are only 2 in CIS 182. I thought the course was pretty great, if anything, maybe another, more advanced, course on the subject would be interesting. Keep Employeeing good prof that care about their students less online and hybrid classes and more traditional, also more tutors at the computer lab. Please do not rehire XXXX for CIS instruction. All XXXX does is assign assignments, randomly from the book, without taking into account the level of current knowledge the students posses. XXXX does not build students up, instead decimates them, and it ultimately discourages students from pursuing a CS degree. XXXX brother may have experience in teaching, but this doesn't mean XXXX is qualified for the job. Even YYYY did a better job, and YYYY was never very helpful. How about offering discrete structures instead of offering a apple desktop course? Have YYYY teach it, I hear he was a math major. offer more hybrid classes more classes or more variety of classes. half-length classes would be nice too, in my opinion, but only if they would still transfer over to csu. More detail example add more programming courses (python, advanced c++, etc) add more programming courses (python, advanced c++, etc) I would offer a introduction course which is a sampler of the CIS program so that students interested in CIS can understand opportunities either in Web development, Software development, or Infrastructure development Be more patient on the course. And meet more than once a week. The one day class should be made into 2 days More thorough lectures on class material. More thorough lectures on class material. more examples of programs assigned to us would help understand what is required of me. despite prompt feedback given on work received I would help it more helpful if red bold marks were made where the mistake was made with commentary on how I can avoid those mistakes. Database options. More offerings. More times. Online Better wireless internet My instructors so far have not been organized to provide proper instruction for CIS teaching. As a wheelchair user i would like better access to the labs. As it is now, it is a horrible set up for wheelchairs, I barely fit in there!!.. I feel that there are some things that can be improved teaching wise, but not applicable to all professors. Maybe a certain few can change certain things. mostly all the computer lab chairs are broken and uncomfortable! I THINK THAT THE INSTRUCTOS NEED TO BE MORE IN SCHOOL NOT ONLY ONE FROM THE WHOLE WEEK, PEOPLE LIKE ME DOESNT HAVE THE SAME DAY OFF EVERY WEEK...SO IT DIFFICULT TO MEET WITH THE TEACHERS AND PERSONALLY PEOPLE THAT IS IN CHARGE IN DIFFERENT DAYS. THEY DONT HELP US AT

ALL. I WENT TWICE TO THE CLASSROOM AND HE SAID ONE MINUTE PLEASE AND NEVER CAME BY...SO THATS WHY I DIDNT COME BACK Any suggestions that I have not really! I love my class and I learned a lot! I think one on one coding in the classroom would be beneficial, instead of only at home assignments. At home assignments are not corrected before tests so students can't know whether or not they are learning the concepts correctly. If we could have a way to confirm we are gaining the correct intellect, this will help students be better prepared for tests. Keep AAAA as a tutor for next fall 2015 semester. Just to strengthen the wireless connections on campus price the book less than $400 Allow the instructors access to more resources and time so that education is expanded on. Blend industry and community leaders to further pioneer the direction of our course of study to drive its impact on our society. This will remove student from their 'bubble' encouraging communication enabling teams to self tutor. Hire students! Better wireless connections The instructor can explain more how to use the new books because I find it difficult to adjust to the new book. The others books tell you what to do and you can go back any time to review. The videos are small and it is difficult to see the numbers. Don't use Windows 8. keep doing what you're doing. keep doing what you're doing. The CIS program needs to focus on computer/network security industry and offer more courses to compensate. It would be helpful to have more tutoring time periods. There are gaps that don't fit me class schedule so I end up having to fit a lot into a little time frame. The labs need to be better maintained. Double sided printing is never enabled, the computers need to be updated. The lab aide who works at night plays games on the computer and would not help me with my networking assignment even though on the schedule it lists that he is available to help for those hours. He is rude and messes around too much, causing a lot of mess/noise. I'm not even sure who I can talk to about this. My networking professors are awesome, but sometimes online/hybrid format is difficult. Using TestOut should be coupled with hands-on teaching. The program can be strengthen by reaching out to students and letting students know that resources are available to them State material to specifically study in Computers in lab need more ram. Dreamspark accounts should be offered by teachrs in courses. I think it would be beneficial to add more CIS and 103 courses. We need better wi-fi Make some of the works that need microsoft word also available on google docs, so if we don't have word we can use other kind of programs Instructors should spread awareness about different types of career opportunities in the computer science and computer related fields. I cannot think of anything else. The program is doing a great job. assignments Sometimes the online software does not accept the correct answers. more CIS 103, 180, 182 classes Maybe more classes for CIS 103, 180 and 182. I learned something in CIS that talks about Ergonomics, and I was wondering if you can get better chairs for the labs, some might be to small for others to sit in, it can hurt some people's backs. Offer an assembly programming class or algorithms class Split up the lecture into two days to shorten it and keep students engaged. All is good All is good Please don't waste students' time with physical classes; online classes are much more efficient and preferable. Consider placement tests for more advanced students? Just a thought. Give clearer and more helpful instructions on assignments.offer a week to do a test. Warner rooms maybe if instructors walk through a complex program from blank Have more Classes available thought the day. more books Offer Free online work/ assignment site!

continue to fix the many bugs in the online courses. Great class and I have no suggestions. Better computers Upgrade computers in Computer Lab! Upgrade computers in Computer Lab! I would like to see a larger emphasis on computer security. For example, our SQL course doesn't begin to go over security issues until the bonus materials, which aren't required - so many students are going to miss out on learning about SQL injections and sanitizing data. I would also like to see a program centered around rapid prototyping with Arduino-like microcomputers or any of the PIC32 branch of chipsets. Learning to fabricate and manufacture new products is a fascinating subject. Cerritos Colleges needs more Java programming tutors. Give harder homework assignments. Start and promote a CIS club with the goal of attending Progfest. Longer available times for us to use the computer labs more hands on work more tutors in the Lab. Everything is good no changes needed. i think we need more time to do the homeworks none, I have learned a lot from this class I think the program is strong right now but having more books on the subject would help a lot More available classes when doing assignments instructor should go over how to do it step by step. If possible, I think the program could benefit from increased enrollment availability in courses like CIS 292 that fill up quickly. Also, I think CIS 101 would benefit from reduced textbook cost. For other classes, the Deitel books being used are somewhat wordy, and seem to read more like reference material - a bit unappealing to read for a beginner. I think I would learn more from a different text series. It's a stretch, but having a course in ios app development would be very nice. More available tutors. Myself being as a CIS major, I have always wanted to see that Professors and students working together in the lab. That way students would get chance to explore many things. I believe in practical learning. More semesters for Java as one is only available in the spring. Practice assignments during lecture. This class was great! The professor was wonderful and VERY helpful. I sadly, cannot sat that about all your CIS teachers. Walk through with complex programs Better online course organization and curriculum More program assignments that students can actually put into use. Up to date programs and patches. Take my criticisms seriously please. I do not feel prepared to make it out in the real world. Make the internet more reliable as well as the computers themselves. Some computers seem to have issues and slow down to a halt at times for no apparent reason. Show the class what pages in the book have the current lesson Show us what pages in the book have the lesson we are currently learning. BBBB's CIS classes should be stated as hybrid, because students don't find out that exams are to be taken in class until the first day of classes, which is too late to change classes or an option to find a test time convient for people's schedule. Also the tutoring system can be improved. It's not clear who the tutor is some times and it's sometimes confusing with the open lab being split into multiple rooms. Computers should be replaced, keyboard and mouse minimum. In my opinion I think professors make the lab part of the class mandatory or at least part of the lab mandatory because some professors don't make the lab mandatory. When I hear that it is not mandatory, I tend to not go to the lab portion of the class and because I don't go to the lab it doesn't help me learn the material. Sure you can say it is my fault for not going, but if it were mandatory I would definitely go. I think everyone could benefit from some instruction / lectures on things we will need to be aware of or use once in the industry, such as version control systems. Overall great More group projects so we can communicate more with each other I enjoy the program very much. The program has a a great base and foundation

Straight to the point work Read Active computer Offer more actual traditional classes. Try and make the lectures as interesting as possible. Try and make lectures as interesting as possible. I think that the program is fine as it is I think that the program is fine as it is the program is sort of easy to understand but when i am working on my project i would like to see how my outcome is supposed to look so i can feel more confident i am doing it right Help students more on a subject they do not understand very good. Help students more on a subject they do not understand very good. Some computer programs are difficult to understand like Access. So a little more help on that subject would be great. Even when reading the study material, there's is still a lot of terms to look up. The study material doesn't necessarily cover all the basis required to know in the provided quizzes. I love the program. There is a variety of classes to choose from. The online course is perfect and I've lrarned a lot. Be more on top of assignments, etc. Be more on top of assignments, etc. Make the book less expensive This program is already really strong. Take time to go through steps of projects with students as a class. Take time to go through steps of projects with students as a class. Take time to go through steps of projects with students as a class. I'm not sure that I will continue with the CIS program at Cerritos because I have developed a negative impression of the quality of the online course offerings at this institution. I've only taken 2 online CIS courses but in both cases felt disconnected from both the faculty and my peers. I rarely if ever, received feedback from faculty about how I was doing in class. I will look elsewhere to continue my computer related online studies in order to achieve my long term professional goals. Make the assignments for PowerPoint, Excel, Access, etc., due on multiple days, instead of all on one day so students don't think all of it can be completed in one day. The assignments can be extensive for beginners so having it due in multiple days should make it easier for students to complete all of the assignments. I learned a lot from my CIS 101 class but the MyITLab was difficult to use to do the practices on and gave me hours of frustration. I had one question that when it said estimate a quarter inch, it meant an exact quarter inch, I had to loose points because i couldnt find a ruler in my house to measure exactly a quarter inch for the picky program. It would be nice if instructors were more helpful to students. Hybrid classes vs. all online because sometimes a student needs to learn from the teacher and tutors sometimes are not that helpful. I have previously taken CIS 101 and it was a lot more complicated and the books were so expensive. It was so hard to keep up with the different books and assignments. The book I purchased for no reason and learned nothing. This semester required no book and was much more easier to grasp the concepts! Well when I took CIS last semester I had to.purchase a really expensive book this semester no book and the class/assignments and the class overall was a lot less complicated. I think more hybrid classes would be effective It;s doing great. I learned so much. I'm taking this online course because I am unable to go to the campus this semester so i'm unable to see the tutors for help. I think maybe study guides for the quiz's/test would be very helpful. Instruction for entry level courses were too advanced and skipped a lot of the basics for student new to college and / or to computer science and programming. I think program is great. Online course was a little confusing in the beginning and sometimes still is Offer online tutoring help It is a great program and it is very informative Books and code to be less expensive No suggestions as of now. This is my first semester, and both CIS classes I am currently taking are very helpful and are helping me expand my programming and coding knowledge. Interaction with the students, more online chat sessions more sections of classes available
