Upon request, the person to be monitored has to be provided with a dosimeter to be able to measure the personal dose at any time. For larger groups of people, the electronic dosimeter can be read out automatically in connection with a PC-based dosimetry reading system and the evaluation software DOSMO. All dosimetry tasks defined in the German Radiation Protection Ordinance (StrlSchV) are fulfilled by this system. Via an interface, the dosimeter reading system reads the dose value stored in the dosimeter. The personal dose values are registered and used to calculate the week dose, month dose and year dose. Limit values can be monitored safely in this way. Further functions, e.g. period monitoring, annual protocols, monitoring of the access rights complete the performance spectrum. 15 ALMO-air installed ɣ- air contamination monitor APPLICATION ɣ radioactive air monitor recorded per second interratable per minute, hours, days,, weeeks, months, years exhaust air system Introduction The generation of radionuclides in a PET Centre may produce air contaminations of the enviroment. Radioactivity may leak from the generator to the environment. Radionuclides may escape during the transfer from the generator target to the synthesis cell. During the synthesis of radioactive tracers the process is almost never 100 % tight and radioactivity may escape. The activity of the production batch can be so high that there is a serious danger of exposure. Therefore, the need for measurement of air contaminations is evident. Indeed, these measurements are required by law. The ventilation channel The generator and the synthesis facilities are usually accommodated in a well shielded part of the basement of a building. The ventilation exit of the PET-Lab is usually located over the roof. The ventilation system will transport the potential air contamination from the PET-Lab in the basement a long way over the roof. The length and pathway of the ventilation channel can be quite complicated. Furthermore, the structure of the ventilation channel is quite difficult to take into consideration. Last but not least, the natural and artifacial depositions in the ventilation channel may create an additional problem. This means that theoretical calculations about the entry, distribution, adsorption, swirling, transportation and delay of the radioactive air fraction are very difficult. The only reliable method is an exat measurement of a well defined gaseous radioactivity emission. For a cyclotron with a gas target, we recommend to generate 11 CO 2, an almost inert gas which mixes quite well with the ventilated air. Nitrogen generation may be considered for cyclotrons without gas target. Radioactives gas release device The operation computer of the activity generator selects all parameters for production of a nominal total activity. As soon as the total activity is reached, the radioactivity fraction is transferred from the target to a release device installed in a shielded box. The release device contains a coiled, metal tubing mounted in the well of an ionisation chamber. The radioactivity fraction is fixed in a metal coil positioned in the well of an ionisation chamber. the net volume of the coil is 70 ml. The absorption of gamma radiation of 511 kev in the wall of the coil-tubing is neglected. The well-type ionisation chamber is calibrated for PET-nuclides and measures the enclosed radioactivity fraction with high accuray. As soon as the total radioactivity in the coil is determined exactly, the sample is released in the ventilation system at a precise time. After a long enough time for dispensing the radioactivity from the coil, the release is terminated and the remaining activity in the coil is determined. At exactly the same time, the radioactivity recording system at the exit of the ventilation over the roof is started. The number of detected events of radioactivity is counted in small time elements, displayed and stored. A seperate device for measuring the air flow speed is installed close to the radioactivity detector in order to calculate the radioactivity per volume

16 Released radioactivity / MBq Display in second, minutes, hours integratable in days, weeks, months and years Calibration The recorded profile of the radioactive cloud passing the radioactivity detector on the roof exit is recorded over time and the number of detected counts is determined for every emitted radioactivity fraction. The flow time from the release-point to the detector is recorded. The release of various radioactivity fractions calibrated in Bq is set out with the detected number of counts for every fraction and completed in a calibration graph. The graph shows that the detection system is linear over the entire range from background to maximum possible radioactivity release. The countrate of the radioactivity detector at background is usually quite low and consequently the reaction speed of any alarm is too low. The maximum countrate of the radioactivity detector for accindental emissions of high PET activities is usually not high enough. Both the low countrate and the maximum countrate are realized in the special design of the radioactive air contamination detector. Recording After the system has been calibrated, the radioactivity emission can be recorded and displayed in a graph over time. The radioactivity is recorded digatally in number of counts in the small time interval of 1 sec. The recording shows no saturation effect at any scale. Ranges are selected automatically without any range overriding. The time scale of a running measurement can be set to minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and year without losing any information. Total Emission of Radioactive Air The integration of all emissions over a long period of time detemines the total radioactivity emission in air over a selected long period. The regulatory authority granting the permission of operation will specify the maximum radioactivity emission per year. The raytest radioactivity air surveillance system will measure the radioactivity emission and relate it to the permitted maximum.
