2 Contents Things to Know... 1 Care of your Tablet... 1 Internet Access Away from Campus Lost or Stolen Tablets... 2 Repair Cost Information... 3 Table of Estimated Repair Pricing... 3 FISD Tablet Repair Center Procedures (TRC)... 3 Student Responsibilities... 3 Parent/Guardian Responsibilities... 4 Things to Know 1. You will receive a Dell Venue Tablet and Charger. However, you have the option to decline receipt. If you so choose, you will be required to check one out daily prior to school and check it in at the close of the business day. You will not be authorized to take it home. 2. In exchange for the right to use the Tablet away from school, students will pay a non-refundable fee of $35 per year. Payments must be made before taking possession of the Tablet. 3. All equipment must be barcoded with a control tag which must remain on the items at all times. 4. Only FISD Tablets may be used at school or on the FISD network. 5. You should have no expectation of privacy with respect to information stored on and/or accessed from the tablet. The tablet belongs to FISD and appropriate district and school officials may monitor its use or access its content at any time. Inappropriate content will not be allowed on the tablet. 6. Your right of possession and use is limited to and conditioned upon your full and complete compliance with the FISD Student Handbook, FISD Acceptable Use Agreement and FISD Tablet Handbook. 7. The only place/entity authorized to repair or otherwise work on your tablet is the FISD Technology Department. The repair process should be initiated by bringing your tablet to your campus Librarian. 8. Documents that you write on your tablet are ONLY backed up by FISD if stored in your personal folder. This personal folder is not available when working at home, so any work performed at home should be saved on an external device such as a flash drive, ed to yourself as an attachment (subject to size limitations) or through use of your OneDrive. Work performed at home should be copied to your personal folder as soon as you return to campus so that it can be backed up. FISD is not responsible for any work not contained in your FISD personal folder. Care of your Tablet You are responsible for the general care of the tablet assigned to you. Tablets that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the Campus Librarian. The Librarian will initiate the repair process with the Technology Department. Keep food and/or liquids a safe distance from your Tablet. Objects placed on your Tablet can damage it. 1

3 Tablet screens are touch screens and therefore sensitive. When operating them, touch them gently, do not poke them or touch then with anything sharp (e.g. pens, pencils, long fingernails) Keep the outside of your tablet free from stickers or anything else that will deface it. Repairs to your tablet and charger should be made only by a district-approved technician. Your tablet is sensitive to extreme temperatures, therefore, do not leave it in your car or outside. Your tablet must be fully charged each night. There will be very few places for you to recharge your tablet at school. To preserve the charge as long as possible during the day, your tablet should be shut down when not in use. Putting the tablet to sleep still consumes the charge potentially causing you to run out of battery late in the day. Internet Access Away from Campus. In order to access the internet away from campus You must have access to an Internet Service Provider (ISP). If your ISP does not provide you with a device which allows you to connect wirelessly, you must have a wireless router or wireless access point connected to the device provided by your ISP. FISD will not provide assistance in connecting your tablet to any non-fisd network. Internet content will be filtered by FISD regardless of whether you connect to the internet at Home, School or elsewhere. Sites you may be able to access from a home computer may be blocked on your Tablet according to FISD Acceptable Use Agreement Policies. Lost or Stolen Tablets If your tablet becomes lost, stolen or vandalized, you must report the situation to your campus Administrator by the next school day following the occurrence. The following procedures will be followed: 1. You, the student must report the lost/stolen equipment and the situation in which it occurred to your campus Administrator. 2. You must complete a police report. Incidents happening off campus must be reported to the police by your parents and a copy of the report must be brought to school and given to the campus Administrator when making your report. 3. If the Tablet is stolen and the student reports the theft (by the next school day) and provides a copy of the filed police report, then the student will be charged only $35 usage fee, provided the loss is not determined by the campus Administrator as a mysterious disappearance. 4. Upon receipt of the deductible, the determination of the campus Administrator and available inventory, another tablet will be issued to you. If you lose your Tablet a second time, you will follow the same procedure outlined above EXCEPT you will no longer be allowed to take the replacement tablet off campus. You will have access to the Tablet in the classroom to complete daily assignments. Tablet will be checked out from the Library in the morning and checked in every afternoon. Students will be charged a replacement fee for the tablet if lost through mysterious disappearance or if deliberately damaged beyond repair. Students/Parents are responsible for reasonable cost of repair for deliberately damaged Tablets. 2

4 Repair Cost Information The tablets are issued in good working condition with standardized software installed. Failure to keep the Tablet in good working condition could result in out-of-pocket costs. All monies owed must be paid in full before a Tablet will be reissued. The annual non-refundable use and maintenance fee of $35.00 does not cover loss or damage due to negligence. The Scale below will be used to pay for repairs due to negligence. For deliberate damage to the tablet, you or your parents are responsible for repair or replacement. Estimated Costs are listed below. Tablets not returned, for any reason, at the end of the school year or when a student withdraws will be considered stolen. Under the Texas Penal Code, section 33.02, Breach of Computer Security will be enforced. Table of Estimated Repair Pricing * Broken Screen $618 (device replacement) Tablet outer case $135 Power Adapter $23 Battery $65 Mother Board $618 (device replacement) Reimage of Hard Drive due to Violation of $15 Acceptable Use Agreement Abandonment Fee (if eventually found) $15 *This price list reflects estimated repair cost at the time of publishing. Actual costs of any parts needed for repairs will be based on manufacturer s price list at the time of repair and may be larger than shown. FISD Tablet Repair Procedures Tablet repairs will be coordinated through the Campus Librarian. If technical issues arise with your tablet, you must take it to the Librarian. If the FISD Barcode tags are missing, you must also take your tablet to the Librarian. The Librarian will document any repairs and notify the technology department for further assistance. While your tablet is being repaired, you will be able to work in the classroom, in the various computer labs available on Campus as well as the Library. Laptops may be available for checkout from the Library on a case by case basis. Repairs are not authorized to be made by any person/organization other than the Technology Department. Student Responsibilities Your Tablet is an expensive and important learning tool and is for educational purposes only. In order to be allowed to take your Tablet home with you each day, you must be willing to accept the following responsibilities: My Tablet is my responsibility and I will not leave it unattended. 3

5 I will be responsible for checking my Tablet and reporting any damages in a timely manner and will back up my data before turning it in for repair. I will bring my Tablet to school fully charged every day. I will not remove or modify the barcode labels that have been placed on the tablet. I will not place any other stickers or markings on my tablet. I will not modify or delete any system files or other programs installed on the Tablet. I will perform the requested and mandatory updates to the Windows Operating System when directed by the Technology Department. I will return the Tablet and all associated equipment when requested, upon my Graduation, expulsion, withdrawal from school or at the end of each school year. I will back up my data prior to return. I understand that by performing regular backups of my data to my FISD personal folder, I minimize the risk of losing my work. Parent/Guardian Responsibilities Your Son/Daughter has been issued a Tablet, charger and case. This is a very powerful, useful and expensive piece of technology and will greatly personalize and enhance their education. We request the following guidelines be adhered to ensure the safe, efficient, and ethical operation of this device: I will supervise my child s use of the Tablet at home. I will discuss appropriate use of the tablet regarding the use of the Internet, , apps and photos. I will ensure that my child reports any mechanical or technical issues to the school in a timely manner. I will ensure that my child understands the Student Responsibilities outlined in this Handbook. I agree and will ensure that the Tablet and associated equipment will be returned to the school when requested, upon my child s graduation, expulsion, withdrawal from school, or at the end of the school year. 4
