Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks ensures its meetings are fully accessible to persons with disabilities. To request special accommodations relative to a disability for this meeting, contact Andrea Jones at The History of Gardiner, Montana: A Series - Part 8 Gardiner's History of Public Education In 1938, a high school was started, not as its own district, but as a satellite school of Park County high. It used half of the second story in the rock Elementary school and an old house located next door. Two high school teachers were sent from Livingston to teach. Betty (Lawrence) Hayes was the first graduate from this school in In 1941, high school classes were large enough that another building was needed. The basement of the Eagles Hall (originally known as the Opera House) was used. At the same time, country school districts were consolidating into the #7 elementary district in Gardiner and classes were experiencing a steady growth. In 1947, State Superintendent of Schools, Mary Ann Condon, informed the Park County High School district that Gardiner could no longer use the Eagles Hall for a school. IT WAS TIME FOR A BUILDING. Mrs. H.W. Childs donated the land the school was to be built on with the stipulation that the property be used only for the school. The Childs' family were the owners of Yellowstone Park Company, the original Concessionaires in the Park. The bond issue to build the school needed to be passed not only by the residents of Gardiner, but the rest of Park County as well. The community of Gardiner campaigned door to door in Livingston and transported voters to the polls to insure a victory for the bond issue. Their hard work paid off. The bond passed the first time in April of Classrooms were complete in 1951, and the gym was started. All grades moved into the new building and the rock school was vacated after being used for 48 years. When funds were short for completion of the gym facility, the National Park Service contributed the balance. In 1961, the home economics room, shop, and science room were added to the main building. At the same time, a four room elementary unit was built next to the high school. The land for this building was purchased from the Northern Pacific Railroad. The Regional Director of the National Park Service, Howard Baker, met with the Gardiner School Board to pledge financial support during this project. In 1972, a bond issue was passed to add a multipurpose room, connect the gym and elementary school and add three more classrooms and an elementary library. Again, the National Park Service contributed to the building project. 8
