7 Powered by TCPDF ( Did you know? Allensworth was the first all-black Californian Township, founded and financed by African Americans. Created by Lieutenant Colonel Allen Allensworth in 1908, the town was built with the intention of establishing a self-sufficient city where African Americans could live their lives free of racial prejudice. At its peak in the early 1920s, Allensworth had as many as 300 residents. Agriculture dominated the economy of Allensworth as several farmers moved in or near the township. In 1925, the lack of irrigation plagued the town s water supply that led to Allensworth s demise. On May 14, 1976, the California State Parks and Recreation Commission approved plans to develop the Colonel Allensworth Historic Park on the central portion of the town. Did you know? The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion was an all-black battalion of the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and the only all-black, all-female battalion overseas during World War II. The group was nicknamed "Six Triple Eight" and their motto was "No mail, no morale." The battalion was organized into five companies as a self-sufficient unit. In 1944, Mary McLeod Bethune worked to get the support of first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, for "a role for black women in the war overseas." The Battalion was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal during their service. On February 25, 2009, the Battalion was honored at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. Three former unit members attended including Alyce Dixon, Mary Ragland, and Gladys Shuster Carter. On November 30, 2018, Fort Leavenworth dedicated a monument to the women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion. Maybelle Campbell, Elizabeth Johnson, Lena King, Anna Robertson and Deloris Ruddock were also present at the dedication.
