Facing competition from providers such as ime Warner Cable, Embarq, and Verizon, C has spent the past decade upgrading parts of its IEC plant with HFC cable while rolling out fiber to the home (FH) in its CEC territories. C is typical of many second tier Independent perating Companies (IC s), where community needs are as important as competitive service requirements. C brands itself as elecommunications. ervice. Community. C saw increased demand within the community for higher quality digital services, including television, along with the need for more programming and information. For the past two years, C has been delivering triple play voice, video and data services over FH networks in ima and t. Marys. However, 35 percent of its IEC customers are on copper connections, and the HFC network that reached the rest couldn t handle a full suite of advanced triple play services. he company risked losing these customers if it couldn t find a way to cost-effectively deliver the same services to them. nce we had begun offering triple play services (voice, data, and V with pay-per-view) in ima and t. Marys, a number of our customers asked for the same bundle of services in other areas, but we couldn t provide it, says Jason Neumeier, C of C. We were looking for a solution that could provide voice, video, and data over copper.

Jason Neumeier, C he company s strategy was to expand its copper network to all of its HFC service areas as a more cost-effective way to upgrade for triple play services. It plans to continue using HFC to deliver analog video while using to deliver IV, data, and voice services. ur copper network is in excellent shape, says onnie edersen, resident of C. A lot of it is only 10 or 15 years old, and we wanted to leverage that investment to deliver the next generation of entertainment services to our customers. C evaluated three different vendors for its triple play platform in June, latforms had to support A2 data and voice services along with reliable, high-quality video distribution. Zhone s MAC product won the competition for several reasons: n Flexible line bay replacement options in a chassis-based system n 11 architecture redundancy to ensure continuous service n Higher line density n A standards-based protection architecture (RR) n Multicast video stream accountability for bandwidth efficiency and ease of management n Having a complete end to end system that included subscriber termination equipment optimized for IV service. n Better A2 performance We had some legacy solutions in our IEC area, and the Zhone equipment gave us the opportunity to replace older switches, because its / cards do voice switching, says Neumeier. Zhone also had some attractive security features, and we liked the modular chassis, because that let us deliver a mix of services based on business or residential customer needs. he MAC 719 and 723 can deliver A2, IV, and VoI services With its 21-slot chassis, the MAC 723 can deliver A2, IV, and VoI services. Beginning early in 2006, C began deploying MAC systems in rural portions of its IEC network, and is targeting 80 percent coverage of its IEC area s remote terminals and central offices by the end of the year. With the MAC, we can offer the whole triple play bundle to any customer, says Neumeier. By replacing legacy gear with the MAC, C has also been able to double the speed of its A2 offering from 2.5Mbps to 5Mbps.
