Johnson County Schools Parent Newsletter January 2015 Make 2015 the best year yet! Festival of Sleep Day January 3 January 3 is Festival of Sleep Day, a day created for people seeking rest and relaxation to get recharged and re-energized for the new year. January 3 is an opportunity to sleep in, be lazy, doze or nap for 20 minutes, eight hours or the whole day. We all know how important proper rest is. Sleep is needed for longevity, and is important for both the brain and the body. Did you know that people can actually survive longer without food than they can without sleep? Sleep is important for concentration, memory formation and the repair of damage to your body s cells during the day. Sleep allows your brain a chance to sort things out. Scientists think this is the time when the brain sorts and stores information, replaces chemicals, and solves problems. Chronic lack of sleep increases the risk for obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and infections. So by all means, make sure you get some extra sleep on Festival of Sleep Day! 1

Our dreams are a big part of what makes life worth living, no matter how young or old we are. It is so important for children and adults to keep their dreams alive and moving forward. Consider the following four steps for making your dreams come true: 3
1. Believe that it s possible. There s no denying that certain dreams are more difficult to achieve than others. But most of the things we dream about are things we could do if we were willing to work toward it, align our choices to support it, and stay flexible in terms of fulfilling it. You need to believe in the possibility, which really means you need to believe in yourself. 2. Take tiny steps to work toward it. Working toward a dream entails aligning with the right people, disregarding discouragement from people who don t support your growth, and taking tiny steps each day to move toward your vision. Little steps add up over time; and because they re easily doable, each little step may inspire you to do more. 3. Make choices that support your dream. We have more power than we often realize, and our power lies in our choices. Whatever your dream, the first choice is to prioritize it; and back that up with belief, passion and enthusiasm. 4. Stay flexible about how you ll fulfill it. It is tempting to be rigid about a dream, such as when it needs to happen, how it needs to happen, and who it needs to include. But sometimes when we re too busy clinging to a specific vision, we miss an opportunity to experience it in different shades. This isn t meant to discourage you from reaching for the stars. It s just a reminder that there are a lot more stars than you may realize, some far closer than others. And in that moment that you re doing something inspired, passionate and in line with your deepest intentions, you will feel two things that you may not have realized weren t exclusive to one specific vision: You will feel alive and proud! Martin Luther King, Jr. Day January 19 Unless inclement weather days dictate otherwise, schools are scheduled to be 4
closed on Monday, January 19 in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. National Handwriting Day January 23 Friday, January 23 is National Handwriting Day. The lost art of handwriting is one of the few ways we can uniquely express ourselves. There is something almost magical about grasping a writing utensil and feeling it hit the paper as your thoughts flow through your fingers and pour into words. So take advantage of National Handwriting Day and use a pen or pencil to rekindle that creative feeling through a handwritten note, poem, letter, or journal entry. Handwriting allows us to be artists and individuals during a time when we often use computers, faxes and to communicate. Fonts are the same no matter what computer you use or how you use it. Fonts lack a personal touch. Handwriting can add uniqueness to a letter, and handwriting reveals details about the writer s personality. Throughout history, handwritten documents have sparked love affairs, started wars, established peace, freed slaves, created movements and declared independence. Though computers play an important role in our lives, nothing will ever replace the sincerity and individualism expressed through the handwritten word. National Handwriting Day is a chance for us to re-explore the beauty and power of handwriting. National Handwriting Day is celebrated every January 23 in conjunction with John Hancock s birthday. Hancock was the first to sign the Declaration of Independence, and is famous for his large, bold signature. Happy writing! Compliment Day January 24 Make sure you celebrate Compliment Day on January 24 by complimenting at least five people. Not only are compliments appreciated by the receiver, they also lift the spirit of the giver. Compliments provide a quick and easy way to connect positively with those you come in contact with. Compliments should begin at home with your family members; and then continue giving compliments in the community 5
and at work throughout the day. Giving compliments forges bonds, dispels loneliness and just plain feels good. So give freely! School Board Appreciation Week January School Board Appreciation Week in Tennessee is January Public education is the backbone of the community, and locally elected officials have never been more important to our children s success. Plan now to show our School Board members that you appreciate their dedication and hard work. They are extraordinary people who voluntarily tackle the enormous job of governing our school districts. Their actions and decisions affect the present and future lives of our children. While showing appreciation should be a year-round process, taking advantage of the designated School Board Appreciation Week ensures that these important people receive some of the thanks they deserve. Johnson County has an outstanding School Board with five dedicated members: Kevin Long, Chairperson Brad Dunn, Vice Chairperson Howard Carlton Bill Gambill Kenneth Gregg The Great Kindness Challenge at RCES January Roan Creek Elementary School is participating in the Great Kindness Challenge during the week of January The week is dedicated to creating a culture of kindness on school campuses nationwide. The Great Kindness Challenge is a proactive, positive bullying-prevention initiative that complements our district s Be Kind Campaign. 6
Healthy Eating Tips for Families Many more children are being diagnosed with high cholesterol, or as overweight or obese. These conditions can cause many health problems for your child, such as diabetes and high blood pressure. These conditions can affect your child now and later as an adult. But by helping your child establish a healthy diet and regular exercise, you can reduce his or her risk of experiencing these health problems. Consider the following guidelines for healthy eating: Parents should be in charge of deciding what foods are regularly stocked in the house. Children won t go hungry; they will eat what s available in the cupboard and refrigerator. From the foods you offer, let your children choose what they will eat. Let children stop eating when they feel they ve had enough; quit the clean plate club. Limit high calorie beverages. Water and low-fat milk are the best beverages for children. Juice is okay in small servings when it s 100% juice with no added sugar. Food is not love. Offer hugs, praise and attention instead of food treats. Children do as you do; so be a role model and eat healthy yourself. Statewide Writing Assessments in February Students in grades 3-11 will be taking the State Writing Assessment online during the month of February. 7
