2 ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS You have designed a new template in Photoshop for a company named travel and you would like to create a website out of it according to requirements of the client Main Menu block News block Main content block Search block Footer Menu Block Figure 1: Template Designed in Photoshop The template contains several blocks namely, News block and search block on the left, Main Menu block and Footer Menu block to hold the appropriate menus and Main content block to contain the main content of the page. Same news will be present on all pages. Page 2 of 7

3 QUESTION 1: (25 MARKS) You have worked the template in Figure 1 on Photoshop and now want to save that in an appropriate format for the web. a) Explain why the.psd format is not appropriate? b) Why is the GIF format often referred to as the appropriate format for the web? Is the format uniform on all pcs? c) It is often said that the GIF format is appropriate for the web, explain why in the current situation this format is not appropriate? d) You now want to slice the template, provide three reasons why you would slice the template? e) A colleague of yours advised you not to slice the template, but rather add hyperlinks onto the pictures in Adobe Photoshop and export them into HTML. Explain in details how you would add the hyperlinks? f) Provide your colleague with 4 valid reasons, why you would not adopt the idea in e)? (8 marks) g) With reference to Figure 1, explain in details how you would slice the template, your answer should make reference to the various sections present on Figure 1. Page 3 of 7

4 QUESTION 2: (25 MARKS) a) Once the slices have been created, you click on file save for web and devices. You specify a folder called travel which is located on your desktop. Given that the original file was travel.psd, what would you expect to see inside your folder travel? b) The Website will require some dynamic elements, thus, you decide to develop the website using php/mysql environment. Given you are working on a new computer, explain the steps you would take to carry on with this project. c) How could you test if your web server is running? d) You now open Dreamweaver and prepare yourself to start working with the travel project. Describe in details the first steps to be carried out in Dreamweaver. (8 marks) e) After successful definition of your website in Dreamweaver, you open the file travel.html, a file that was created by Photoshop previously. You now want to convert that into a Dreamweaver template. Why would you do that? (4 marks) Page 4 of 7

5 f) While converting the travel template into a Dreamweaver Template, you need to choose between an editing region or not. With reference to the following sections present in Figure 1, explain clearly which type of region you would set for News block Main Menu block Search block Main Content block Footer Menu block Support your choice with an appropriate explanation. QUESTION 3: (25 MARKS) a) Given that the travel company will rely solely on search engines to bring in new customers, what would you suggest to the manager if he requests you to create the website entirely in flash? The IT manager of travel wants to add a description to the website that appears on search engine results when travel websites are searched for. The description is as follows: Travel agency is the sole representative of Paradise on Earth. Contact us on for more information b) Explain in detail how you would do that, including the codes you are going to add to the HTML page and in which section the code is to be added Page 5 of 7

6 c) The IT manager also requested that the following keywords are associated with his website: paradise, hotel, travel, Mauritius and sea. Write the HTML codes to do this. While designing the contact us page, your client request for a form where visitors have to place surname, other_name, , phone and a message and the information is stored into a database. d) What are the fields to be created in the database? Please specify field types as well. e) Once the form and the table have been created, explain in detail how you would connect the form to the table such that when the user clicks on submit, all the data is inserted the table? The client requests a form validation that validates the form as follows: address should be valid.
