In Oaxaca, the exchange emphasized the struggle in defense of corn, indigenous to Mexico. Several participating groups are part of the Network in Defense of Maize, a national network working to protect and rescue native corn, and to fight against GMO corn in Mexico.

Five principles of agro-ecology Enhance recycling of biomass; optimizing and balancing nutrient flow Enhance soil biotic activity by managing organic matter Minimizing losses through microclimate, soil and water management Enhancing species and genetic diversification Enhance beneficial biological interactions

Enhance beneficial biological interactions and synergisms among agro-biodiversity components thus resulting in the promotion of key ecological processes and functions Locally controlled renewable energy programs and water resource development that respects ecological limits Crop diversification programs that integrate crops, vegetables, livestock, trees and fish in the ecosystem Contribute to global efforts in: biodiversity conservation; water conservation; Climate mitigation and adaptation Increased ecological functions measured in terms of water quality improvement of runoff; increased plant biodiversity; increased soil microbial diversity Synergies among economic, ecological and climate adaptation benefits (especially stability in terms of assured farm outputs from unit of land by integrating trees, crops, vegetables, livestock and fish in the agroecosystem) Agricultural, water and energy policies that prioritize the use of natural resources such as land and water for food production, local energy security and local water security.

Scaling up agro-ecology: A tool for policy from IATP, Fall 2013 begins from principles that support agro-ecology in the context of food sovereignty (we use seven* principles), presents some examples of practices that could be used to implement that approach. developed a set of ecological as well as socioeconomic indicators of success, Identified and mutually supportive national and international policies that would be needed for that approach to flourish. * five principles informed by an ecosystem-based approach shared by all strands of agro-ecologists and two of them recognizing the pivotal role of small scale producers and workers in ensuring their food sovereignty see at

Enhance abilities of small scale producers and workers to self-organize, retain, reproduce and redefine cultural practices to pursue sustainable and gender-sensitive livelihood strategies; and effectively influence social and policy processes as well as governmental decisions Support efforts by small-scale producers and their communities to establish locally controlled institutions, including cooperatives Livelihood strategies at community level are ecologically sustainable Empowerment of local communities, increased economic viability of traditional livelihood practices, revitalized rural and agrarian economies Pro-democratization policies that recognize women s central roles in agricultural and food systems, revitalize rural economies, minority cultures as well as marginalized livelihood practices

Moving forward: On agro-ecology Continue advocacy at CFS to invest in agro-ecology Advocate agro-ecology as the single most effective strategy to address water crisis /the right to food In HLPE report on water and food security In water-food energy nexus discussions Post 2015 sustainable development agenda In the US educate around the science, practices, and social movement around agro-ecology in the context of food sovereignty Through US Food Sovereignty Alliance With the congress through the coalition of partners
