(Core C). Purpose of the Course This course is the introductory course to environmental education. The students will explore the basic topics of human ecology including population, natural resources, pollution, energy, water and current environmental issues. Prerequisite: None BIO 103 Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Describe the four major global concerns including the trends and indicators of population, soil degradation, biodiversity and climate change. Explain the difference between sound science and junk science, ecosystems and ecosystem capital; the major ecosystems and their functions and how their ecological footprint impacts these systems. Describe the flow of energy in an ecosystem including photosynthesis, the pathways of organic materials and nutrient cycling. Describe the patterns of population growth and the impacts on sustainability, interpret profile graphs and explain how the World Bank is related to developing countries. Explain how the agricultural revolution has changed food production, what impact gmo s have for the future and how this relates to developing countries and their poverty and hunger problems; soil formation and consequences of erosion as it related to food production.

2 Describe IPM, the problems of chemical pesticides and management alternatives. Explain the water cycle including purification of water, how humans impact the cycle and the consequences of these impacts. Explain how their waste products are managed and the impacts on air and water. The students will develop an energy plan for the United States to demonstrate their understanding of fossil fuels as well as alternative energy sources. Students will understand that there are conflicting viewpoints and be able to explain both sides of environmental issues Required Materials: Textbook Environmental Science by Richard Wright. And Dorothy Boorse (12th Edition) Prentice Hall. Upper Saddle River, NJ ISBN: or Computer o Please note that there are computer labs available on every HACC campus with desire2learn compatible computers. The labs are available during normal hours of operation when the campuses are open. Internet Connection o You will need an Internet Service Provider; Broadband connection (cable or DSL recommended); and an account. Software o Web Browser capable of passing WebCT browser check requirements Mozilla Firefox (suggested) or Internet Explorer o Course Specific Software Microsoft Office 2010 or above Adobe Acrobat Reader for reading PDF files Course Policy: This course is completely on line. All exams, assignments, etc will be submitted online. Instructor Availability: Please make arrangements with your instructor at the first sign of difficulty in understanding course material. Do not make the mistake of waiting too long. Please feel free to contact me anytime by , phone or in person. I will respond to all messages within two business days. Individual appointments can be arranged. Studying Course Material: This course is designed to be challenging, therefore you will likely find this course to be difficult. Plan to start studying from day one. Do not wait until a week before the exam to start studying, or you will be overwhelmed by the amount of information. This course is comparable to classroom sections, in terms of the amount of materials presented. Students in semester face-to-face sections spend approximately 3 hours per

3 week in lecture taking notes. Your strategy for studying should be that you read through each PowerPoint and take notes as if you are sitting in the classroom. Some of the lectures are videos that you can pause and repeat as necessary for learning. Traditionally, science students should plan to study at least 2-3 hours outside of class for every hour in class. Therefore, you should devote 3 hours reviewing PowerPoint lectures and taking notes. In addition, plan on reading and studying the material for at least 6 hours per week for lecture. To be successful, students must avoid waiting until a few days before the exam to review the material. Course Requirements Point Values Exams 210 Final Exam 110 Environmental Issues/action 50 Discussions 240 Research Presentation 50 Research Notes 40 Total 700 Grading: = A = B = C = D Below = F Environmental Issues This assignment gives the student a choice. You can either post environmental issue papers or participate in action for the environment. The issues must be current issues about the environment or the action is a project/action that you take on during the semester. You can do a combination of each to total 50 points. Each issue is worth up to 10 points/issue. Each hour of action is worth 10 points. This is a requirement of the course it is not extra credit. You can choose to 1) Volunteer for the environment opportunities will be announced in class and are listed on webct under action opportunities, check newspapers for local opportunities as well as the internet, local community boards, etc. You will need to get a signature from the person in charge of the action/event stating that you participated and the number of hours you were there. An example of an action would be to help with the recycling at HACC or to volunteer with the HACC roadway clean up. Students will reflect on their service experiences in terms of how the experience related to environmental science; what did you learn about yourself and your community from this experience; how did this activity relate to civic responsibility. We will discuss these experiences on the discussion thread.

4 2) Environmental Issues: see posting directions post issues on the environmental issue thread Students cannot duplicate an article that has been presented in the thread. Title/Author of Article, source Date issues must be current events which means the article must be written within the last 3 months Environmental Issues should include a summary of the article in a paragraph or two Pros and cons of the issue - there are always 2 ways of looking at an issue include 2 pros and 2 cons of the issue these are NOT your opinion, but are the prose and cons of the article that you are reviewing Resolution proposed - this can be your opinion about the issue and what should be done The Environmental issue papers will be posted as requirements during the semester under the discussion board thread called environmental issues. Grading for issues: total of 10 possible points 4 points for the heading (includes title, source, author, date) 1 point for summary 4 points for 2 pros/2 cons 1 point for resolution Environmental Research Project: 2 parts 1) Individual Notes 40 points) & 2) Group Presentation (50 points) This is a group project. Groups will be formed week 2. More details are on Desire2learn on the home page in the assignment folder. Examinations: 4 exams will be given throughout the course. Exams may include identification, multiple choice, matching, true-false,, short answer, or essay questions. All exams will be online. On line exams will be available for one week. Technical difficulties do not constitute an excuse for a missed exam. If you are unsure of how to submit an exam, contact your instructor. Discussion Assignments: There will be a public written bulletin board in the course called ask the professor. Students can either ask or respond to a question from the instructor or another student. Students may post messages or questions at any time as long as they are related to the course. However, please be aware that this is a public message board, and all students in the course will have access to the posted messages. Therefore, you should make every effort to keep your posts clean and civil. The instructor reserves the right to censor or remove postings that use offensive language or are not relevant to the course.

5 There will be 20 discussion homework assignments over the semester (1or 2 per week). The instructor will post these on a Monday and will be due by the 11:30pm on Wednesdays and/or Fridays. It is important to write without spelling or grammatical errors and points may be deducted for sloppy grammar or composition. These assignments are worth 12 points each, no late submissions are accepted. The discussion threads will close at 11:30pm on due dates. Students who do not participate in 2 consecutive discussion assignments may be dropped from the course. Tutoring Services: On a walk-in, scheduled, or referral basis, the learning centers at each campus provide free tutorial assistance and workshops to students in the areas of academic skills development. Centers are staffed with professional and peer tutors who assist students seeking to improve their skills in reading, writing, accounting, math, problem solving, science, computer literacy, speech and academic success. Tutorial sessions may be arranged for students who require assistance in other subjects. All inquiries regarding these and other services should be directed to the Office for Academic Success at your campus location. Smarthinking: Online tutoring Services for students are available through Smarthinking.com. Incomplete Grades: A grade of I may be awarded by the instructor to students who, because of extenuating circumstances, need additional time beyond the semester to complete course work. Students must see the instructor and request the incomplete grade. Coursework must be completed within 8-weeks of the following semester or a grade of F may be given. Withdrawal from the Course: Students may withdraw from the course up until the last day of class. However, the drop form must be received by the Registrar s Office with both the instructor s and the Dean s signatures. Waiting until the last day of class may mean that there is not enough time to process your paperwork. Please see the Student Handbook for the procedure to withdraw. All students failing to withdraw may receive a grade of F. Students are responsible for dropping the course. See the FAQ section on webct for the DAW form. Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty is defined as an intentional act of deception in which a student seeks to claim credit for the work or effort of another person, or uses unauthorized material or fabricated information in any academic work. It includes, but is not limited to: Arranging with other students to give or receive answers on an exam. Conversing online, by telephone, or otherwise receiving assistance from another person while taking an exam (in the case where two students are involved, both students involved will be considered to be cheating). Copying from another student's exam or class assignments.

6 Allowing another student to copy from you during an exam or class assignment. Giving or receiving aid or referring to any written information source during an exam or quiz, unless permitted by instructor. Plagiarism (copying material directly from the textbook or other sources to complete class assignments). Copied statements from the Internet without proper acknowledgement or citation are considered plagiarism Any other activities defined as Academic Dishonesty in HACC Administrative Procedure 594.
