The purpose of the ranking is to provide a neutral and independent comparison of the quality of universities across the region, based on a set of criteria that commonly applies to all countries involved in the study. We consider the study primarily as a tool to empower young people to make more informed choices about the options available to educate them. However, it will also be a valuable resource for universities and governments across the region, helping to drive up standards and encourage long-term strategies for social and economic development in the education sector. The QS Latin America University Rankings (QS LATUR) highlight regionalism and the growing profile of the continent's universities in the higher education international scene. 8 Online impact Social Media: Facebook, Twitter and Blog Although it is difficult to provide 100% accurate social media stats, some figures can offer a reliable source for impact analysis. Facebook likes for the Latin Rankings results table published on topuniversities.com sum a total of 12,649 as of 17th October The Latin American rankings reach on Twitter was also notable and the table results webpage has got 1,473 tweets, 12,649 likes 1,475 direct tweets (re-tweets not included) The launch of the QS University Rankings Latin America led to an outstanding boost in QS Intelligence Unit blog traffic (iu.qs.com). A total of 25,531 views were reached during the week where the rankings were published. This traffic peak was second only behind the record of 50,800 weekly views established during the 2011 QS World University Rankings. 9 Launch event 2011/12 QS University Rankings - Latin America October 4th :00 London time. On the 4th of October of 2011, the first edition of the QS University Rankings - Latin America were launched from London, UK. The event took place in Canning House, the prestigious institution dedicated to stimulating understanding and engagement between Britain and the Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian world, and was sponsored by IELTS and supported by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Canning House. 11 Rankings methodology A Latin American approach The QS University Rankings - Latin America considers the primary missions of world class universities: Research Quality, Graduate Employability, Teaching Quality and International Outlook. QS entered into consultation with 110 university rectors, authorities and academics from Latin America in compiling the rankings methodology and identifying the best way to measure these core missions throughout the region. 14 The team 2011/12 QS University Rankings - Latin America Ben Sowter - Head of Division As Head of QS Intelligence Unit, Ben is fully responsible for the operational management of all major QS research projects. He is actively involved in the collection, compilation and tabulation of all the data that lead to, amongst others, the QS World University Rankings, in which he has been involved since its initial inception in 2004.A frequent contributor to the press, Ben's opinions and expertise on global education trends is used regularly by major global publications. His lectures, seminars, workshops and opinions are highly sought after. Liliana Casallas - Project Manager Liliana led the first edition of QS University Rankings: Latin America, from the initial methodology report and consultation with over 100 universities, through to the publication of the top200. Hailing from Venezuela, Liliana has an MSc in IT, Management and Organisational Change from Lancaster University. Before joining QS in 2009, Liliana spent two years leading a restructuring project for the finance office of the regional government in Venezuela. Her experience as a project manager includes leading successful projects in both the public and private sectors, in Japan, Europe and Latin America. Martin Juno - Research Executive Martin Juno is from Mar del Plata City,. He has a degree in Tourism Management & Economics from The National University of Mar del Plata. Upon graduation, Martin joined Fundación Global (Global Foundation), a prestigious and think-tank based in where he worked for almost 10 years as an economic researcher and data analyst, leading several research projects and outreach programmes. Martin joined the QS Intelligence Unit in November 2010 and is Research Executive of the Latin American Rankings at the QS Intelligence Unit. Diana Moya Executive PR Diana Moya holds a Degree in Advertising and Public Relations Diploma in Business from Universidad de Barcelona. With over six years dedicated to the world of communication, his last work experience was as an Account Executive in Spain before embarking on the adventure of London. Currently Executive Public Relations and Marketing in QS London. Stephanie Braudeau Analyst Stephanie hails from France and has a Master s degree in Management from La Rochelle International Business School. Having been awarded a scholarship from the Chinese government, she studied Chinese for one year at the Shanghai International Studies University. She also studied for an undergraduate degree in foreign languages, where she took part in a university exchange in New Zealand. Stephanie s contribution to the Higher Education sector includes the development of industrial relations of a School of Technology, part of Shanghai University (UTSEUS) with European companies. Besides this role, she gained events and market research skills in a work experience in Malaysia within the French Trade Commission. SPECIAL COLLABORATORS Jason Newman Project Sponsorship Jason Newman is the Commercial Director for the QS Intelligence Unit and Commercial Director for QS Australia/New Zealand. Based in QS London HQ, he has worked in events and promotions for the last 22 years and specifically in international education for the past 12 years. He has run a portfolio of international student recruitment products and services that include undergraduate and postgraduate recruitment fairs, publications and websites. Baerbel Eckelmann Research Manager Adviser Baerbel is originally from Germany. She has a MA in General Pedagogy, Sociology and Psychology from the University of Passau, Germany and a MA in Applied Social and Market Research from the University of Westminster. Soon after joining QS, Baerbel took on the responsibility for the data and knowledge management of the QS World University Rankings and the QS.com Asian University Rankings. Baerbel also manages the QSIU research team in Singapore. Danny Byrne Editor of Topuniversities.com Supplement for QS Latin American Rankings co-editor. An expert on higher education, Danny's articles and opinions have appeared in major publications around the world. He works closely with QS Intelligence Unit and acts as a spokesperson for its research. Danny has a background in journalism and communications.
