3 PUBLICATIONS, DOCUMENTS, MANUALS & LINKS The Cooperative Development Center Provided by the U.S. Overseas Cooperative Development Council (OCDC). Contains a variety of useful resources relating to cooperative development in both developed and developing countries. Provides an extensive library of documents of both a practical and academic nature, including documents on good practice, how to start and develop a cooperative, case studies, and analysis. The site also provides links to other related organisations as well as to relevant education and training establishments. Its coverage of issues relating to the role of farmer organisations in developing country agriculture is good. Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Rural Organisations Link to FAO pages on rural organisations provided by the Sustainable Development Department. Contains a number of downloadable manuals on how to form and develop rural organisations. Also provides access to an extensive database of documents and publications (SDdimensions) that can be searched using key words or by theme (e.g. institutions rural organizations farmers associations). World Bank Rural Producer Organisations zations Resources on rural producer organisations managed by the World Bank s Agriculture and Rural Development Department (ARD). The link contains information on projects and events and provides access to a variety of relevant publications. Can also be accessed from the World Bank s homepage. International Labour Organisation (ILO) Cooperative Branch ILO site devoted to cooperatives. Contains lists of publications and projects as well as sections on poverty alleviation in Africa, and cooperative reform (including a full text database of cooperative laws). Broad coverage without special emphasis on agriculture or developing countries Coopnet A website provided by the UN s International Labour Organization (ILO). The library provides a searchable database of documents on cooperatives and cooperation and there are also links to cooperative organisations in different countries around the world. Broad coverage without special emphasis on agriculture or developing countries. University of Wisconsin Center for Cooperatives
4 A US centre for the study of cooperatives. The site contains links to a large number of documents and publications on agricultural cooperatives that can be searched for by topic or sector. Whilst a great proportion of the resources concern US experience, a number of useful documents relating to developing countries can be found under the topic of international cooperative movement. SERVICE PROVIDERS ACDI/VOCA ACDI/VOCA is a non-profit organization formed out of a merger between Agricultural Cooperative Development International and Volunteers in Overseas Cooperative Assistance. The organisation promotes broad-based economic growth and the development of civil society in emerging democracies and developing countries. It offers a range of technical assistance services in the areas of agribusiness systems, enterprise development, financial services and community development. The site provides an overview of ACDI/VOCA projects and activities. Agriterra Dutch organisation that aims to promote, facilitate and support lasting cooperation linkages between rural people's organisations in the Netherlands and in developing countries. Services include ICT and web hosting services, organisational profiling and capacity building, and financial planning support. Site includes links to relevant organisations and a list of projects. Land O Lakes - International Development Division US cooperative specialising in farm-to-market agribusiness. Engaged in institutional capacity building and cooperative development in Africa and other developing countries, and offers technical support to producer organisations. Site provides an overview of projects and activities. National Cooperative Business Association (NCBA) CLUSA International Program The NCBA is a US organisation which, in addition to its cooperative support activities in the US, also provides training, management and technical advice to farmer organisations and similar associations in developing countries, especially in Africa. The site provides an overview of CLUSA projects and services and of the organisation s approach to working in developing countries. A news and information section provides information about CLUSA s activities in individual countries and documented accounts of the program s success stories.
5 SOCODEVI Canadian non-profit organisation that provides training, advice and support to cooperatives and mutual organisations in developing countries. Its expertise includes the strengthening of cooperative capabilities in the provision of agricultural marketing and farm support services. The site contains contact details, summaries of its activities, and links to other organisations. A searchable database of documents is also available to partner organisations. Swedish Cooperative Centre Can also be accessed from the homepage and clicking on the English language link. The Swedish Cooperative Centre (SCC) is an NGO that supports self-help development initiatives - cooperatives, farmers' associations and informal groups in developing countries. The site provides links to its regional offices in Southern African and Eastern Africa. Swedish Cooperative Centre Regional Office for Eastern Africa The organisation focuses on capacity building for cooperatives, farmer organisations and other informal groups. Provides technical assistance in project planning, monitoring and implementation and facilitates networking and the sharing of experiences and information on best practice. The site lists partners and projects in the region and outlines the regional strategy. Swedish Cooperative Centre Regional Office Southern Africa The organisation focuses on capacity building for cooperatives, farmer organisations and other informal groups. The site provides contact details and an overview of the Swedish Cooperative Centre s activities and projects in Southern Africa. INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS AND ALLIANCES COPAC COPAC provides a forum for promoting and coordinating cooperative development initiatives through information exchange and policy advocacy. Its membership includes, amongst others, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP). The site provides a database on cooperative policy and legislation in different countries; information on projects relating to cooperatives and farmer organisations; a variety of publications on cooperative development; and links to other organisations. International Cooperative Alliance
6 The ICA is an international NGO which unites, represents and serves co-operatives worldwide. The site contains a link to the International Cooperative Agricultural Organisation, a specialized organisation representing agricultural cooperatives from around the world. International Cooperative Agricultural Organisation A specialized organisation of the International Cooperative Alliance representing agricultural cooperatives from around the world. Site contains contact details for farmer organisations in different countries - mostly national apex organisations as well as details of meetings and seminars. International Cooperative Alliance Regional Office for Africa African branch of the International Cooperative Alliance. The site contains a number documents relating to agriculture in Africa, information about its web hosting services, as well as details of the ICA - AGRIMAT network, a network of farmer cooperatives, farmer groups, service providers and affiliated bodies directly and indirectly involved in marketing of agricultural produce from and in the eastern, central and southern Africa Region. The network seeks to build strong and viable trading and marketing capacities of various co-operatives and farmers groups in central, eastern and southern Africa. International Federation of Agricultural Producers (IFAP) IFAP was established in 1946 to secure the fullest cooperation between organizations of agricultural producers in meeting the optimum nutritional and consumptive requirements of the peoples of the world. It works to improve the economic and social status of all who live by and on the land. The site includes a link to the IFAP African Farmers Committee which serves as a permanent forum where African farmers organisations can meet and work together on a regular basis. An issues section examines various agricultural issues, the role of women in agriculture, as well as issues relating to agricultural cooperatives. The site also provides a couple of manuals on the development of self-supporting farmer organisations and on fostering linkages between FOs and extensions services.
