2 Transfer to Avila Each year, over one-third of new students are transfers at Avila. They come directly from community colleges and other four-year institutions. Some have taken time off and are returning to school. Whatever their backgrounds, they all discover the same thing, our commitment to the academic, professional and personal successes of our students. And when your path leads you to Avila, part of this commitment means Avila will work with you during every step of the transfer process, from evaluating your transcripts to helping you enroll. As a transfer student, you re not alone With so many students transferring to Avila, there are plenty of people just like you going through the transfer experience. Once you re on campus, you ll see how quickly you can get involved and feel at home. The open and friendly environment, your academic advisor and student organizations for all interests make it easy to meet new people. See it for yourself Visiting campus will show you firsthand everything Avila has to offer. Speak with faculty members and students, tour the campus and facilities and sit in on a class. Meet with admission representatives to learn about all the options available to you. You may schedule an individualized campus visit by contacting the Office of Admission at or go to avila.edu/admission/campusvisit. TR NSFER meet Tess Bellah A love of biology is what eventually brought Tess Bellah to Avila University. While pursuing an associate of arts degree at a local community college, Bellah took a biology course and immediately decided it was a field she was interested in studying when she moved on to a four-year school. About that time, a representative from Avila visited with her and spoke about the University s strong biology program. She then found out that Avila also had another of Bellah s passions, volleyball. Any opportunity I want is here for me. I came and visited campus and really liked how small and intimate everything was, she said. Every class I ve been in, I ve loved the strong relationships with my professors. I talk to my professors almost every day after class and get a better understanding of the material. In addition, Bellah said she had the opportunity to take a trip last summer to the Grenadine Islands in the Caribbean with biology professor Bob Powell to study lizards. Another unique opportunity she received by attending Avila was that she has served as president of Tri Beta, a national honor society for biologists. Any opportunity I want is here for me, Bellah said. Undoubtedly, more opportunities await Bellah when she graduates in December with a bachelor s in biology, chemistry minor. She said she hopes to one day work in wildlife conservation, helping re-populate endangered species.

5 American Heroes A.H.E.A.D. earning avila degrees meet Terrill Beverly The Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of As an education partner, Avila University, in conjunction with the VA, funds tuition expenses for veterans at 100 percent. That means qualified veterans can attend Avila for FREE! Go to avila.edu/veterans for more information. When Terrill Beverly first started considering where he wanted to further his education after two years at community college, he applied to just one university. But a friend told him it might be wise not to limit himself to just one choice. It was around then that he was first introduced to Avila University. Beverly s thankful for his friend s advice. Transferring from his previous college was seamless and he s currently in his first semester in Avila s Kinesiology program. He has decided to emphasize in Sports and Exercise Science and said he s looking forward to graduating. Prior to applying, Beverly said he gained most of his knowledge of Avila on his own, by scouring the Internet. He (Dr. Larson) talked to me not just about the subject (kinesiology) itself, but how I d make it a career. I liked that I went from 12,000 students to 1,200, he said. What sealed the deal, Beverly said, was meeting Dr. Gerald Larson, a professor in Avila s School of Science & Health. The man was so passionate about (kinesiology), Beverly said. He said Larson was meticulous in explaining the differences of Avila s programs compared to others in the area. He talked to me not just about the subject itself, but how I d make it a career, he said. Beverly, a veteran of the Iraq war, attends Avila with the help of the post 911 GI Bill, which helps veterans attend college, but is just one of the many avenues for financial aid available to Avila students.
