2 PROGRAM OVERVIEW Program Mission Richland College Health Professions Programs provide students with quality, affordable and accessible healthcare education and training to produce job- ready individuals who fulfill the needs of healthcare employers and the community. Program Description Nationally Certified Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) Patient Care Technicians are Allied Health professionals who provide direct patient care within their regulated scope of practice. They perform basic nursing assistant tasks (as delegated by the nursing or medical staff) which may include obtaining patient vital signs and other data, communicating with the healthcare team and patients, assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs), complying with confidentiality requirements, and performing ECGs and Phlebotomy tasks. Completers of this program are eligible to sit for the national examination through the NCCT, National Center for Competency Testing. Total tuition is $1320, books and other required materials are not covered by financial aid. 3 REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION INTO THE PROGRAM: 1. Applicants are taken on a first come first serve basis. While there is no prerequisite testing involved, students should be able to read and write English at the 12 th - grade level and meet the physical requirements stated above. 2. Prospective students should be aware that felony convictions will prevent them from becoming PCTs in the State of Texas. If you have questions regarding your eligibility, please contact the program coordinator for assistance. 3. Apply legal guidelines to the practice of medical offices 4. Follow medical law and ethics guidelines 5. Provide instruction to patients and medical practice personnel 6. Manage medical practice records and finances 7. Perform tasks on a microcomputer 8. Perform coding processes or similar functions 9. Perform tasks assigned by physicians and preceptor Liability Insurance In order to provide liability protection for the student during lab procedures classes, Richland College has entered into a contract with a company to provide a cost effective student liability insurance for clinical classes and internships. The cost (though subject to change) is pro- rated at $11.70 for the Fall semester classes, $8 for Spring semester and $5 for Summer semester courses. Liability insurance is paid once an academic year. Coverage stays in effect until August 31 st of each year. Completion Criteria Successful completion of the program requires that the student meet the following criteria: A. Attendance: Students must attend a minimum of 90% of all scheduled classroom time. B. Demonstrate mastery in the program competencies. Students will receive a syllabus with these course competencies at the beginning of each course. Instruction will be developed to train students to achieve the course competencies. Students will be evaluated on their achievement of these competencies. C. Achieve additional requirements defined by the instructor. D. Successfully complete the required courses with a passing grade of A, B, or C. A Certificate of Completion will be issued upon successful completion of this program. Transcripts may be requested as proof of individual course completions. Applicants who learned English as a second language and have never taken credit college- level course work in the United States will be referred to the Richland College Multicultural Center for assessment. 4 Admission Prerequisites The purpose of prerequisites is to ensure that participants have the entry- level skills necessary to succeed in the Patient Care Technician Program. Developmental studies or English for Speakers of Other Languages classes are available for candidates who have deficits in meeting the academic prerequisites. Richland College will assist candidates by planning a recommended course of study to acquire necessary educational prerequisites. The Program Administrator has the authority to waive an educational prerequisite based on criteria that indicates that the applicant will be successful in the program. I. The Application Process: All prospective students for the Patient Care Technician Program will need to complete the following steps to begin the application for admission process: A. Prospective students should attend the Health Professions Information Session, or view it online at Additional documents; financial aid directions, program document checklist are available online and at the live Information Sessions. Once a determination of academic readiness by unofficial transcripts or assessment, the applicant then gathers and submits the following required documentation to the Health Professions Admissions Coordinator (WH244) or the Medical Programs Administrator (WH240) to begin the application process: Students will need to submit the following: 1. Completed, signed and dated application page (from the Program Application Packet) 2. Completed Student Document of Understanding (from the Program Application Packet) 3. Proof of age (Driver s license, State ID, or Passport) we will make a copy 4. Proof of high school graduation or high school senior or GED or unofficial college transcripts showing credit college course work completed within the United States. (For those who have submitted their high school transcript or GED and/or transferred transcripts from outside of the DCCCD to any of the DCCCD colleges, we can access your student records when we meet with you.) 5. Completed Health Evaluation and all required immunization records. 6. Valid CNA license for those only needing the PCT portion of the curriculum and not the Patient Care Procedures or Basic Medical Term and A&P course. 7. Submit all required documentation to the Admissions Coordinator, plan your first class or classes and receive a signed registration form from the Admissions Coordinator. If the AC is unavailable, please see the Medical Programs Administrator to submit application for admissions documents or obtain signed registration forms. 8. Take signed registration form to Continuing Education in Thunderduck Hall to register and pay or have tuition deducted from Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG.) Documentation of Workplace Prerequisites Candidate must be a minimum of 18 years of age Validation of agreement to abide by the SCANS competencies Financial Aid Qualifying students may be eligible for financial aid. Prospective students begin the financial aid process by completing the FAFSA application for the current or upcoming academic year. Visit the Web site and complete the application online, using the Richland College school code of Once the Student Aid Report (SAR) has been processed, students should then print out the TPEG Application form from the DCCCD Web site with course information for each class that the student wishes to register for each semester. The Texas Public Education Grant (TPEG) is available to assist non- credit students. The TPEG pays for tuition only, up to $1500 per academic year (Fall, Spring & Summer.) 8 Student Document of Understanding I, have examined and understand the following: The Foundational and Workplace (SCANS) Competencies required for the Patient Care Technician Program. I acknowledge their importance in the workplace and in college course work. I agree to pursue them as an integrated component in all of my course work. I certify that I have read this and understand its meaning. I also have been given the opportunity to ask questions regarding this statement. I understand that if I miss more than 10% of a class, I may not be able to make it up and will have to retake the class. I also understand that if I am chronically tardy to class, points may be taken off my final grade and/or it may be added to the 10% of hours missed in class. The syllabus will explain the method the instructor will use to determine the grade. He/She will determine if the absence can be excused. I certify that I have read this and understand its meaning. I understand that if I am 29 years of age or younger, I am legally required to submit proof (original documentation) that I have received the Bacterial Meningitis immunization prior to registration into my first class or classes. New immunizations required by the State of Texas also include Influenza. I also understand that prior to the first clinical class that I will be required to (1) provide proof of immunization or serologic proof of immunity for Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Varicella (Chickenpox), and Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis booster at my own expense; (2) be tested for TB annually; and (3) have a current CPR for Health Professionals card. The Hepatitis B immunization series can take 4 to 6 months and must be started at the beginning of the program, if not already completed. All program students are required to obtain a school health exam (form is provided in this application packet) completed by a licensed health care provider before enrolling in the program. For those who do not have health insurance, Health Professions can provide an affordable clinic referral. I also understand that I will be required to pay for liability insurance through Richland College, estimated cost $11.70, or less for clinical courses. The cost is included in the total tuition for any required courses. All liability insurance coverage expires on August 31 st of each year.
