SUPA the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance Prof Jim Hough University of Glasgow Chief Executive
Scottish Research Pools The current Scottish Pooling initiatives are: Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA) - one of the founding pools ScotCHEM WestCHEM EaStCHEM Edinburgh Research Partnership in Engineering and Mathematics (ERP) Glasgow Research Partnership in Engineering (GRP) Marine Alliance for Science & Technology for Scotland (MASTS) Northern Research Partnership (NRP) Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES) Scottish Institute for Research in Economics (SIRE) Scottish Universities Life Sciences Alliance (SULSA) Scottish Imaging Network: A Platform for Scientific Excellence Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA)
SUPA I (Scottish Scottish Universities Universities Physics Physics Alliance: Alliance) A Partnership for Excellence A Partnership for Excellence SUPA l will pool and enhance Scotland's strongest physics research to develop international leadership provide a magnet for researchers and sponsors worldwide
SUPA I SUPA l funded for a start in M (58% from Scottish Higher Education Funding Council) ending 2010 then extended to 2011 SUPA l 6 Universities: Edinbugh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, St Andrews, Strathclyde, University of West of Scotland 5 funded themes + Graduate School Astronomy and Space Condensed Matter and Materials Physics Nuclear and Plasma Physics Particle Physics Photonics Plus subtheme of PP and Astro TEOPS (Technology for Experimental and Observational Physics in Scotland) which involved the Astronomy Technology Centre in Edinburgh.
Vision of SUPA SUPA Aim: SUPA 1 will place Scotland at the forefront of research in physics in the UK 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise Three departments in Scotland were ranked 7th equal or better (out of 42), led by St Andrews standing at equal 2nd with Cambridge and Nottingham, Edinburgh 6th and Glasgow equal 7th. Heriot-Watt Physics improved significantly, rising to equal 15th place, on a par with Oxford and Southampton. Collectively, SUPA has more high quality activity than Cambridge.
SUPA II SUPA ll funded to start winter M (33% from Scottish Funding Council), for 7 years, so overlap with SUPA l SUPA li Two More Universities: Aberdeen and Dundee extra themes Physics and Life Sciences (PaLS) Energy Plus extension of TEOPS subtheme, renamed SPARK (Scottish Physics and Astronomy for Research and Knowledge exchange) More investment in people overall but particularly in PaLS and Nuclear (SCAPA: The Scottish Centre for the Application of Plasma-based Accelerators)
Current SUPA network
SUPA successes ~ 12 international high flying professorial appointments, ~ 50 other academics/senior fellows Approx 50 prestigious fellowships (Royal Society, Royal Society of Edinburgh, UK Research Council {EPSRC, STFC}, ERC etc) Approx 8 Royal Society/Wolfson Merit Awards (salary enhancements for 5 years to top class researchers) 3 elections to the Royal Society Increased grant income overall ( 27M/year to 41M/year over period) New evolving areas Astrobiology, Energy and Physics and the Life Sciences
SUPA successes Very successful Graduate School (Director Avril Manners) Growing Knowledge Transfer (KT) although this was not explicitly funded initially. Enhanced collaboration stimulated winning of RCUK Science Bridges Award Strathclyde, Glasgow, Heriot Watt and St Andrews with Stanford and Caltech
Graduate School - Remit Technical Courses across themes Astronomy / Space Physics Condensed Matter & Materials Physics Energy Nuclear and Plasma Physics Particle Physics Photonics Physics and Life Sciences Transferable Skills Workshops, Summer Schools, Meetings, Distinguished Visitors Prize Studentships

SUPA Minimum Requirements Scottish Universities Physics Alliance Since 2008, every SUPA PhD student has been required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of lectures + coursework and assessment of specialist theme coursework 20 hours or 4 days of generic skills in the first 2 years of their PhD Note Some Themes set a higher recommended level
Graduate School Partnerships Scottish Universities Physics Alliance Scottish Condensed Matter Doctoral Training Centre (EPSRC) 6M 5 year project 50 studentships INSPIRE Scottish Govt Initiative with companies 1.6M 3 year project 12 industrial studentships International Doctoral Centre in Optics and Photonics (EPSRC) 5M 5 year project 50 studentships Other Doctoral Training Centres (EPSRC) Application of Next Generation Accelerators Magnetic Resonance Particle Physics and Astronomy studentships funded by STFC (approx 24/year)
KT highlights 1 SUPA was initially created without a KnowledgeTransfer/Exchange resource The award of a Special Fellowship to SUPA (STFC/Scottish Enterprise) kickstarted the KT activity by providing a KT manager The main KT project, SUPA Knowledge Transfer to Aid Company Growth is funded by ERDF and a local Scottish Government initiative. To date, more than 20 development contracts between SMEs and university departments have been agreed with a further ~ 4 under active development.
KT Highlights 2 Successful bid for SFC Horizon project (INSPIRE) - 1.5m for industrial studentships, small grants to help technology transfer to companies and staff exchanges Two spin out companies launched Secured 2 STFC industrial Fellowships one for SCAPA (Plasma Accelerator project) and one for technology transfer to Thales University/company partnership on bonding oxide materials for optical applications (STFC funded)
KT developments Now under SUPA ll have a KT Director (Roy Clarke), 3 business Development Managers and 2 technologists working with the various schools/departments So we look forward to enhanced knowledge transfer activity!
Challenges to be met Keeping researchers motivated towards collaboration and the work required when they have received their share of funding So future carrots are needed Matching collaborative priorities to competitive individual institutional priorities when bidding for funds requires care The pool has to be able to add value to each institutional bid Long Term Sustainability
