2 Facts and Background Information The working environment of the industrial designer has changed considerably in recent years. The significantly shortened development time and service life of products in today s globalised markets has greatly increased the importance of product development and design strategies as tools of management. Design will only be able to respond to this change successfully by equipping graduates with the appropriate technical, analytical and theoretical knowledge and place them in the market. Wuppertal has therefore focused on the training of strategy and process advisors with organisational skills and has deliberately moved right away from producing creative craftsmen with an academic background.

3 Industrial Design Challenges The dynamic nature of the markets has inevitably resulted in shortened product development times which require new strategies of parallel development processes in engineering and design. We call this process concurrent design & engineering. Under this term, collaborative competences and networking abilities in particular will be playing a major role, beside innovative rapid prototyping, tooling and manufacturing techniques. Here, industrial designers are now increasingly both working on interfaces with other disciplines and taking a leading role in the development process for which industrial design is predestined due to its cross-discipline positioning between economical and technical content.

4 What to Expect the Wuppertal Model The aim of the Wuppertal model is to expand the core competence of industrial designers with scientifically based methods of innovation and product development. Our graduates have an excellent reputation for their technical competence and practical professional orientation. We concentrate on imparting knowledge that aims at incorporating actual design and innovation processes into the industrial development process on the basis of creative, artistic principles. Aiming to increase the employment of industrial designers in elevated leading positions of the economy, the new Wuppertal model has as its main feature the link between basic capabilities and scientifically-based skills in strategy and processes.

5 ÜBERSCHRIFT Positioning and Organisation Name 8 Semester Program with Integrated Internship/ Projekt and 2 Specialty Fields Fach/Schwerpunkt 1: Technical Products and Product Systems 2: Design Strategy The Bachelor of Arts study course in industrial design has been prepared for a normal period of study lasting four years and students are admitted to the winter semester each year. The foundation training period is completed with the conclusion of the second academic year. During the main study phase, students have the opportunity to specialise in Technical Products and Product Systems or Design Strategy. With the technical option, the main emphasis is on providing the designer with the skills necessary for creative design and practical application. The main focus of Design strategy is towards the marketing and market relevance of design and is tailor-made more to the concerns of the product and portfolio management of the company.

7 1st Semester Fundamentals Artistic/Technical/Theoretical/Three Dimensional The first semester covers the artistically-creative, technical and theoretical principles of design. This semester concentrates on the modules Fundamentals of Artistic Design and Three Dimensional Design which are taught by representatives of artistic practice. The basic training is supplemented by introductory courses on design theory and technique. Students first come into contact with design within the framework of a design study.

8 2nd Semester Design Development Artistic/Technical/Theoretical Focus on Product Design The second semester follows the pattern of the first semester but focuses more on product design than artistically oriented object design.

11 3rd Semester Design Methodology Initiative/Project Management/ Design Context The third semester lays a sound foundation in processes with the module Design Methodology. The module Initiative forms a framework for students to implement their own project. The two courses Project Management and Design Context are run in parallel and provide the knowledge needed for the Initiative module.

12 4th Semester Designprocess Technical fundamentals/ Product Development Process/ Experimental Design During the fourth semester, the technical fundamentals are gone into in greater depth in the module Technical Design and students are taught an integrated product development process. In the module Experimental Design, there is also an opportunity to test experimental design processes beyond a direct application, both from the artistic and the theoretical side.

15 5th Semester Visionary Design Sponsoring Projects/ Competence in Communication and Digital Media Semester Five concentrates on the implementation of sponsored projects and is intended to enable students to realise visionary product ideas within an industrial collaboration. An examination of the actual requirements of the sponsoring partner and exacting time stipulations on the one hand and the technical contributions of the course modules on the other help considerably to perfect digital media and tools.

16 6th Semester Specialization Strategy/Portfolio/Communication/ International Design Practice The sixth semester of the BA degree goes into the two areas Strategy and Technical products in greater depth. The main priorities for increasing competence during this phase of the study are the development of the individual portfolios of students who have decided on a career in design and the deepening of the communicative abilities of the students in the product language and the spoken language. A foreign study is alternatively supported by the module International Co-operation during which intercultural skills in particular are imparted. Within the framework of the international university partnerships of the study course, numerous first-class exchange programmes are already underway with the Hogeschool Antwerp (BE), Delft University of Technology (NL) and the University of Cincinnati (USA). This module is designed to be taken both by Wuppertal students studying abroad and by our guest students studying in Wuppertal in order to promote exchange.

19 7th Semester Design Practice Practical Training/Company Supported Studies/ Thesis Foundation During the seventh semester, a company-supported study is prepared where the student is given a placement during a 6-month specialised practical phase. Students simultaneously set about finding a useful topic to work on for their thesis during block seminars. The seventh semester is used to establish practi-cal skills and strengthen the connection between the know-how from the placement company and the university.

20 8th Semester Thesis The eighth semester is used to work on a thesis which is either strategically or technically oriented. In the first case, this may be in the form of theoretically-based science while in the second case, the work is always accompanied by a design. Supplementing modules, like the Initiative module help students with wholly practical considerations, such as organising and holding a closing meeting with an integrated exhibition.

24 Social Life With approximately students per year, the Industrial Design study course is relatively small, almost like a family. In spite of the requirements and the time pressure being at a very high level during study, there is always time for a football match, party after the design work is finished or a discussion among the small circle of industrial designers.
