ARRKOM (The Arrangement Comittee) This years ARRKOM is composed of both Danish and Finnish members which has added to logistic complications, but has been in line with and thrived on the cross-nordic experience Stine is the head of the committee - and in charge of the child circle Disa is in charge of the cultural programme Laura is in charge of the newspaper Tappetti and information in general Thomas is in charge of the newspaper and the excursions Anssi is mostly there to look pretty and create some appropriate and good Finnish vibes :-) Quite a few people have been volunteering their help and we are most grateful for it! 1

It's fairly easy to get there, and the easiest way is to take a commuter train from Helsinki Railway Station (the big one) to Masala station (Masala is called Masaby in Swedish). From Masala station, 2

3 the walking distance to Majvik is 1,4 km. There are at least two trains per hour during the day. If you want to check the schedule in advance, you can do so at: From: Helsinki To: Masala The commuter trains are marked with letters: those going to Masala are S, U, and Y. They leave from tracks at Helsinki Railway Station. The 'S' trains leave Helsinki at.08 hourly. (That is, eight minutes past full hour , 13.08, and so on.) The ride takes 32 minutes. 'U' is the slightly slower regular service, and it leaves Helsinki at.38 hourly. (That is, eight minutes past half hour , 13.38, and so on.) The 'U'-ride takes 34 minutes. 'Y' is the express train, taking you to Masala in only 23 minutes. It does not necessarily run every hour, but when it does, it usually leaves at.33 (by now you know what this means). You can board all these trains with a zone ticket ('seutulippu' in Finnish, 'regionalbiljett' in Swedish), which covers 3 zones and costs 5,80. At your point of arrival, you may also consider asking for a zone ticket that will get you all the way from (for instance) the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to Masala station. The number of zones required is different depending on your point of departure. (Further information on how to get to Helsinki Railway Station below, in the section PUBLIC TRANSPORT FROM FERRIES/AIRPORT.) When you get off at Masala station, you will find signs pointing you towards Majvik. Failing that, you can consult the map provided by the hotel (see below). The walk from Masala station to Majvik is 1,4 kilometres. There is a taxi stop at the station. If there are no taxis at the stop, you can call for one at the number Should you require assistance, please do not hesitate to contact ARRKOM (Telephone +358-(0) Anssi). 3

4 GETTING THERE: CAR From Helsinki: take road 51 towards Hanko (that's Hangö in Swedish). When you reach the ring road 'Kehä III' (Ring III in Swedish), turn east. The signs say 'KEHÄ III ITÄÄN - RING III ÖS- TERUT'. (It is impossible to turn west on Kehä III at this point, so this should pose no difficulties.) After approximately 3 km, exit Kehä III at the sign MAJVIK. You have arrived. 4

5 From any other direction approaching Helsinki (for instance, from Turku, Tampere, Jyväskylä or St. Petersburg): turn west on Kehä III. Look for the sign MAJVIK. If you arrive at road 51, you have come too far and should turn back. In this case, follow the instructions above ("from Helsinki"). For those who are brave enough to rely on a navigator: the address is Majvikintie 1, Kirkkonummi. PUBLIC TRANSPORT FROM FERRIES/AIRPORT How to get from the ferry terminals to the Railway Station in Helsinki. From Silja Line (Olympic Terminal) take tram number 3T. The name of the tram stop is Olympialaituri (in Swedish: Olympiakajen). The tram will take you to the Railway Station tram stop in 15 minutes. The total distance including 200 m walk at the terminal and 100 m walk at the Station is 2,2 km. From Viking Line (Katajanokka terminal, in Swedish: Skatudden) take tram number 4. The tram stop closest to the terminal is Vyökatu (Gördelgatan in Swedish), a 400 m walk. Get off at the stop Ylioppilastalo (in Swedish: Studenthuset). From there the distance to the Railway Station is 300 m. Total distance from the terminal to the Railway Station is 2,5 km. How to get from the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport to the Railway Station. From the Terminal 2 (international flights), take bus number 615 (or 615T). It will take you to the Railway Station in Helsinki in approximately 40 minutes. The distance is 20,7 km. How to get from the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport directly to Majvik. For those who fly, but do not wish to travel via Helsinki, there is an option to save 10 minutes or so by taking bus number 540 from the platform number 14 at Terminal 2 (international flights) or platform number 5 at Terminal 1 (domestic flights). This bus will take you to the Leppävaara train station (Alberga in Swedish). There you can change to a S, U, or Y train to Masala. (Please see the information on the trains in "GETTING THERE: TRAIN".) The total distance is 38 km + 1,4 km walk from the Masala Station to Majvik. Practical information about Majvik Der er stort set ikke behov for at forlade Majvik i den uge man er på session. 3 måltider, 2 gange kaffe til at forsøde pauserne, og dertil en bar der er åbent til kl. 1 hver nat skulle jo nok kunne dække det meste. Desforuden er der også en lille kiosk på stedet. Her kan man købe tandpasta, slik og deslige, så den del er der også taget hånd om. Majvik tager imod kreditkort. Skal man bruge kontanter er det dog én ting man skal huske at medbringe selv. Der er et stykke vej til nærmeste bankomat. 5

6 In English: You can use your credit card at Majvik, but you can t get cash. The nearest ATM is quite far away, so please bring cash if you believe you will need it. Der er gode muligheder for rekreative sysler i løbet af ugen. Ved henvendelse til receptionen kan man låne vandrestave og gå ruten der er anlagt omkring Majvik på 1,5 km. Poolen har åbent hver morgen mellem 7 og 10, så det er muligt at få en morgendukkert. Medbring selv håndklædet fra dit værelse. Der er også adgang til en gym. Det har åbent døgnet rundt, så her er det bare at gå til den. Og hovedattraktionen - den skal ikke glemmes: Majvik har intet mindre end eget minigolfanlæg, hvilket jo nok vil kunne fornøje barnlige sjæle i alle aldre. Køller kan lånes i receptionen. Saunadimensionen er på bedste finske vis en verden for sig. Majvik har hele 6 af dem. Nogle i hovedbygningen, andre nede ved søbreden i et lille hus. Der vil i ugens løb blive arrangeret 3 saunaaftner, hvor man vil blive guidet igennem den korrekte måde at gøre den slags på af kompentente folk. Det vil ske mandag, onsdag og fredag aften. Mød op og få en unik finsk oplevelse! Sidst men ikke mindst byder Majvik på gratis internetopkobling. Den trådløse forbindelse skulle fungere i samtlige rum. Til trods for det manglende behov for at forlade Majvik, så kan vi stadig følge lidt med i hvad der sker ude i den store verden. Der vil stadig være mulighed for at være logged på. Make a lunchpacket at breakfast. Welcome-dinner will be on Sunday. Kretsfest will be on Wednesday evening. Each studycircle has to pick up a picnicpacket at Majviks kitchen and find a good location to dine. The big farwell party will be on Friday evening. Cleaning: Housekeeping will empty the trash cans and change the towels 3 days during your stay. During your stay housekeeping won t make beds or change the linen. If you will need to change the linen, please ask for a clean one at the reception. Laundry: The nearest laundry is located in the centre of Kirkkonummi. You can get more information at the reception. 6

7 Ironing facilities are available at the end of both of the main building s corridors. Mail: Mail leaves daily from the reception at 9.00 am. Stamps and cards are for sale in the reception. Payment at Majvik: If you want to buy something to your room charge, please give the number of your credit card to the reception. Otherwise Majvik only accepts payment by cash or credit card. Dette betyder, at man ikke selv må medbringe alkohol til stedet. About NSU NSU, Nordiskt Sommaruniversitet är en organisation och ett nätverk för forskning ochstudier tvärs genom de Nordiska länderna och de akademiska diciplinerna. Även om ordet sommar finns i namnet bedriver NSU verksamhet hela året. Studiekretsar, projektbeskrivning och studieprogram Studiekretsarna är stommen i NSU. Den tvärvetenskapliga forskningen och studierna baserar sig på studiekretsar. Kretsarna består av deltagare från de olika nordiska länderna. Sammanhållande kraft för kretsen är koordinatorerna som organiserar vintersymposium och kretsprogrammet under sommarsessionen. Varje krets utgår ifrån en projektbeskrivning som godkänts av representantskapet. Kretsen har därefter möjligheten att verka i upp till tre år. 7

8 Vintersymposier Under vintern samlas kretsarna till var sitt vintersymposium, som hålls under årets första kvartal. Symposiet sker i ett nordiskt land. Deltagarna presenterar inlägg, kretsen kan ha gästföreläsare, man planerar kretsens verksamhet under sommarsessionen och gör upp publikationsplaner. Sommarsessionen Sommarsessionen hålls årligen hturvis i de nordiska länderna. Samtliga kretsars deltagare har möjlighet att delta i sommarsessionen. Under dagen har kretsarna eget program, men möts under gemensamma programpunkter som de inbjudna föreläsarnas föreläsningar. En stor del av den övriga tiden fylls av kulturella och sociala program som organiseras av arrangemangskommittén. Representantskap och styrelse NSU:s högsta beslutande organ är representantskapet. Representantskapet består av representanter från varje land. Det har möten under sommarsessionen, och beslutar bland annat om nya studiekretsar. Representantskapet väljer också NSU:s styrelse som står för det kontinuerliga arbetet under året. Under årets sommarsession möts representantskapet under måndag och torsdag. Tider och plats meddelas senare. Samtliga sessionsdeltagare från sina respektive nordiska länder möts på Landsavdelningsmötet hvor representanter til representantskapet väljas. Det är VIKTIGT att DU kommer! Årets möten äger rum på söndagen kl. 17. Plats meddelas senare. Publikationer NSU ger ut skriftserien NSU Press. I serien NSU Press publiceras monografier, antologier och artiklar som är resultatet av NSU:s studieverksamhet. To select representatives to our parliament (representantskapet), every Nordic country has their own meeting. This year our international participants are offered a separate meeting at the same time, Sunday 20th at 5pm. More information on this will follow. Nordic Summer University The Nordic Summer University (NSU) is a long-established institution within the Nordic intellectual arena. During more than 50 years of existence it has provided a lively forum for academic and intellectual debate, and involved many leading academics, politicians, and intellectuals from all of the Nordic Countries. The NSU has always been at the forefront of intellectual thinking, juxtaposing views from the international and Nordic academic arenas, and introducing new thinking and influences into the Nordic Countries. The NSU is not a dusty relic of a bygone age, but a dynamic space where intellectuals from different age groups meet to share their thoughts and test out their arguments. It constitutes a forum for intellectual thought where narrow academic disciplines are replaced by thematic topics, creating an interdisciplinary space where academics and intellectuals with various backgrounds can interact. These thematic study circles form the backbone of our organisation, creating interdisciplinary networks that function within the Nordic Countries for three-year periods. Study circles largely focus on issues related to the social and human sciences, and most participants are PhD students or postdoctoral scholars in these fields. Separate winter seminars are held for each study circle, and a more extensive summer conference is organised for all the study circles. Our goals have always been communication and the exchange of thoughts and ideas. These goals can only be achieved if we entail a certain flexibility concerning the use of language. Therefore both Scandinavian languages and English are used interchangeably. 9

10 Cultural programme The cultural programme is more or less set up for this years summer session. As earlier mentioned, the ambition of this years programme is to give a broad insight into the contemporary soul of the Finnish art scene. The Dance Theatre Minimi will give a performance called Absolute Finland. We will also have musicians performing on various nights, for instance a cappella male choir Äijä, Shaman violin and a local guitar duo called Shwarma & Kemppi. There will be a surprise theatre performance as well as plenty of other social or "subcultural" acitivities, such as nordic walking, beach volley, sauna... The Anniversary will be celebrated with an NSU exhibition on and a Birthday Party on Friday. The newspaper Revolution i avis-land! Avisen, som I kender den, er blevet erstattet af en ny. På NSU-2010 vil avisen blive en vægavis med et helt nyt look, lavet af en ny redaktion og blandt andet skrevet af DIG! Eller i hvert tilfælde håber vi, at alle sommersessionens deltagere vil være med til at give avisen nyt liv. Den vil selvfølgelig have alle de informationer, du kunne tænke dig, et lækkert lay-out, en klumme fra redaktøren og et spændende fagligt indhold. Vi håber dog, at dele af det faglige indhold vil blive produceret af kredsene. Det vil både højne indholdets kvalitet og give de forskellige kredse mulighed for at promovere deres program, oplægsholdere og temaer generelt. If you already have texts of this nature you would like to contribute with, you can send them to: thomasfn@gmail.com NSU 60 th anniversary The Summer Session 2010 marks the 60th birthday of the Nordic Summer University, NSU. This truly Nordic, interdisciplinary organisation, with an increasing international flavour has throughout it's 60 years made an impact within the Nordic academic environments, nurtured new research environments and inspired many people who now work and influence areas of academia, culture, politics and business. Accordingly there will be a number of events throughout the week to celebrate this momentous occasion! An exhibition will be set up, in which the special character and history of NSU will be ani- 10

11 mated through words, objects and pictures in order to take both guests and participants on a trip down memory lane. For this reason, we kindly ask all former participants of NSU to bring along any memorabilia, which they might be in possession of (see below). The exhibition will be installed with the help of a student from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, Oskari Tolonen. We ask you to consider bringing an object relating to your experiences at NSU, an item that has importance and meaning you would like to share with others. It may be a cheesy souvenir, a scrap paper note, any odd ephemera, or a genuine treasure. The exhibition is not just about these things you've brought but also about the why of your items, too. 12 Plenary Speakers Mladen Dolar Mladen Dolar is an expert on Lacanian theoretical psychoanalysis and classical German Philosophy. Along with Alenka Zupan; and Slavoj Žižek he is considered a founder of the so-called Slovenian School in Lacanian psychoanalysis, which among other things seeks to produce linkages between psychoanalysis and German Idealist philosophy (i.e. the philosophies of Kant, Fichte, Schelling and Hegel). These linkages are not however to be seen as mere similarities, but rather as interventions, where each of the connected moments are given new and productively provocative meanings through the intervention itself. And crucially the new meanings and connections, which arise in this manner are systematically employed in an engaged understanding of contemporary political, social, cultural and existential phenomena. Recently Dolar has focussed his research on the phenomenon of the voice. In his A Voice and Nothing More (MIT Press, 2006) he considers the voice as that which is a necessary condition for any linguistic practice. But being understood as a condition in this way does not turn the voice into a stable ground for that which it conditions, according to Dolar. The voice is not a direct cause for or foundation of language. Rather the voice is that which grounds language in and by its being excluded from language. It is exactly when we no longer hear the (brute) voice of a speaker, but instead find ourselves understanding the meaning of what he is saying that language is actualized as such. And because language is in this way founded in and through the destruction (or disappearing) of the voice, the smooth functioning of language is always also conditioned by the possible reappearance of the voice in the midst of well-functioning language. Thus the relation of voice to language is one of contingencies and surprising irregularities. From this insight Dolar proceeds to trace the significance of the voice in its physical, metaphysical, ethical and political aspects. Check out his homepage for further information: Andrew Gibson Andrew Gibson is Research Professor of Modern Literature and Theory at the University of London Department of English. His primary fields of research are the writings of James Joyce and Samuel Beckett as well as modern French philosophy and literary theory. In particular his work has concentrated on the linkage between textual practice and political practice. Thus his book Joyce's Revenge: History, Politics and Aesthetics (Oxford University Press, 2002) presents the argument that the aesthetic practices that make up Joyce's Ulysses are responses to the colonial history and condition of Ireland, the colonial politics of Irish culture and Anglo-Irish cultural politics. In his theoretical and philosophical work Gibson has distanced himself from the trends of postmodernism and poststructualism that used to dominate so-called radical political theory and philosophy. The suspicion being that rather than presenting a challenge to contemporary repressive power structures, these trends tend to solidify them. Thus a crucial question is how one can give life to critical theoretical practice after one has given up on the central tenets of postmodernism. Gibsons current theoretical project seeks to conceive of and validate such practice through paying close attention to the concept of intermittency. In this work Gibson has engaged in discussions with contemporary 12

13 philosophers such as Alain Badiou and Jacques Rancière, as well as perhaps less known Françoise Proust, Christian Jambet and Guy Lardreau. The results of this research is to be published in a monograph entitled Logics of Intermittency: The Anti-Schematics of Historical Reason in Contemporary French Philosophy, which develops a 'melancholic-ecstatic' conception of historical time through a set of detailed engagements the philosophers in question. The book will be published by Edinburgh University Press. Check out his homepage for further information: Excursions Helsinki - the city and beyond This excursion will go to the heart of the city. On the trip you will get a guidet tour of the city centre, its history, and development. We ll be going through the development from the city as a Swedish outpost over its place in the Russian Grand Dutchy till the creation of the capital of the modern nation. Today the city is full of life, more or less crazy projects, and world class architecture! The guided tour will last a coulpe of hours after which you will be able to explore the city on your own... Hiking in Nuuksio National Park Close to Majvik, there lies the National Park of Nuuksio (in Swedish: Noux). NSU offers you the chance to experience Finnish nature at its best on the excursion day. With a trained wilderness guide, we'll hike through forests where many endangered species live, swim in a lake, and eat bilberries straight off the twigs. Nuuksio is not that distant from the big city hustle and bustle of Helsinki geographically, but mentally it gives a totally different picture of Finland. Please note that you have to be 12 years old to participate in the hike. The price of the hike consists of transport, snack and the guide's salary. It will depend on the number of people attending. The maximum number of people is eight, which would make the price approximately 20. You can find information about the park af Family fun at Linnanmäki Linnanmäki is the number one amusement park in Finland, with over a million visitors annually. Its attractions range from the hottest new whirlies to carousels and other types of fun rides for toddlers. A must is the venerable, wooden rollercoaster "Vuoristorata" from It was build by Danish engineers, and on the opening day pilsner and smørrebrød were served. Together with NSU, Linnanmäki will be 60 years old this summer. From the very beginning, profits from the amusement park have gone to charity for children. 13

14 The price of the Linnanmäki excursion is the equivalent of a return train ticket and the wristband for the rides in the park (entrance is free). The wristbands cost 35 for persons taller than 120cm, 23 for persons shorter than 120cm, and 18 for persons shorter than 100cm. Adults accompanying chilldren shorter than 100cm can enter the rides free of charge. Child circle VELKOMMEN TIL NSU S BØRNEKREDS Igen i år opretter NSU en børnekreds. Der har været god tilmelding, så det ser ud til at der vil være legekammerater uanset om man er 4, 9 eller 12 år. Sammelgat ser det ud til vi bliver børn. Som det også fremgår af NSUs hjemmeside, så er børnekredsen alene for børn mellem 3-15 år. Dertil kan NSU heller ikke påtage pasning af børn med særlige behov Børnepasserne vil være Thomas og Malthe, der også var passere sidste år. Dertil har også finske Heta tilbudt sin hjælp. Heta er 35 år, har langvarig erfaring med undervisning af børn, og er dertil billedkunstner, hvilket hun bruger i sit arbejde med børn. Efter bedste evne vil vi arrangere en sjov, sikker og stimulerende uge for børnene. Både i dagstimerne, i kredsen, men også om aftenen, i et separat kulturprogram for børnene. Der er f.eks. planer om et børnebal -- husk noget flot dansetøj - og der går også rygter om at Pippe vil dukke op. Majvik har ikke et rum særligt indrettet med henblik på børn. Vi får bare et almindeligt, tomt konferencerum stillet til rådighed. Dertil har vi blot et begrænset budget. Vi vil derfor gerne bede jer forældre medbringe noget legetøj, der vil kunne komme alle til gavn. Selvfølgeligt blot til lån. Annas mor har f.eks. planer om at medbringe et lille legehus-telt, hvor de mindste vil kunne indrette en dukkestue. Børnemusik, bøger, spil, udklædningstøj og hvad man eller vil kunne finde på, er selvsagt også yderst velkomment - og også noget at hænge op på væggene. Vi må hurtigst muligt få forandret rummet, så det ikke er så bart. Har man som menig sessionsdeltager lyst til at give en hånd med, er der mulighed for at melde sig som hjælper i børnekredsen for f.eks. ½ dag eller et par timer. Man kunne f.eks. opføre et trylleshow, optage video om sessionen i børnehøjde, komme med indlæg til avisen eller bare gå ud og lege med nogle af børnene. Eller måske få hængt noget op på væggene den første dag, så det ligner en børnehave? Kontakt Stine Hvalsum, hvis du er interesseret i at give en hånd med. Børnenes oplevelse bliver kun så god, som vi gør den til ved fælles hjælp. Majvik har swimmingpool. Husk diverse badedyr, pistoler og flydebælter til en masse vandsjov. In English: The childrens circle is ONLY for kids 3-15 years old. As it is now it looks like there s going to be around 22 kids. There is going to be 3 grown-ups taking care of the children. Put together they will be speaking all of the Nordic languages. 14

16 Manchetforslag (proposal to a new Study Circle) Towards a New Ethical Imagination: Political and social values in a cosmopolitan world society The proposed research program will investigate ethical and social values in a cosmopolitan world society. We will examine the paradoxes, dilemmas and tensions in recent debates about ethical, political and social values in contemporary societies. We can observe that ethical problems increasingly have been a central problem in public debates in Nordic societies and in the international community. Both political decisions and daily practices in public institutions and private business organizations are increasingly faced with ethical problems and issues. Moreover, there are more and more problems and practices where ethical issues are central themes and where ethical reflection is a central theme. This tendency has been very present in the relation between democracy and administration, the obligations of business corporations in relation to profit maximization and economic efficiency, public and private management and governance, health issues, the relation to the environment and concerning the use of natural resources and the social obligations and responsibilities towards global poverty, democracy and environmental problems. Every discussion of the prioritization of the social use of resources have today to be oriented towards different ethical dilemmas, problems and paradoxes of different kinds with very far reaching implications for the life of people in society and nature. Where ethics earlier was conceived as a concern only for individual human beings, ethics is now a problem that is present in all areas of society and in all institutions of society. Therefore it is now relevant to talk about social ethics, societal ethics and ethics in global society and we would add ethics in a cosmopolitan society where all problems and solutions concern the whole world and not only separated parts of particular communities. In this context we need to develop a socially relevant ethical reflection and competency and a social ethical and cosmopolitan public debate that can qualify and contribute to debate about good solutions of the dilemmas and paradoxes that we face in global community. We need to build on existing theory and research and we need to develop these reflections in order to make concrete choices and decisions in relation to contemporary problems and practices. There is also a need for publication of this work so that the Nordic and international public debate can have possibilities of a qualified ethical reflection over these problems and paradoxes. Social ethics is not new in philosophy and social thinking. It has its origin in the antique Greek philosophy, where ethics in the philosophy of Aristotle was closely connected to political issues and social relations. Therefore we can say that it is Aristotle who formulated the first social ethics. But in modern times with Immanuel Kant there has been formulated a strong division between personal ethics and the common law and it is this distinction that has been dominating until our times. In the last years there have been attempts to connect the ethical and political reflections again. In this context we can in particular mention the German philosopher Jürgen Habermas, because his work is a great attempt to create a differentiated social ethics that connects personal ethical dimension, the moral dimensions, the political dimensions and the technical instrumental dimensions in a common theoretical framework. Habermas also connects philosophical reflections with a sociological approach in a differentiated social theory that includes the plurality of institutions in modern democratic societies. We can indeed also mention many other theorists for example John Rawls 16

17 who develops a liberal political philosophy, Paul Ricoeur who gives the hermeneutical philosophy an intercultural political dimension and Richard Rorty who discusses the paradoxes of postmodern global society. What is essential in these different attempts is to formulate theories of ethical, political and social values in cosmopolitan world society and they are therefore among others important contributions to social ethics in post-secular global world. It is essential for our research project to link such social theories to empirical research in the social sciences. We want to discuss political processes in cosmopolitanism and globalization with the use of the insights of empirical social sciences like history, law, economics, sociology and political sciences. But we will also include insights of the technical and applied sciences like business economics, medicine and the natural sciences that are in particular relevant with regard to the study of environmental damage and climate change. In short we consider our methodological approach as based on the insights of hermeneutics and science and technology studies where practical and theoretical approaches are combined in a solution and context oriented approach to the relevant problems and research objects. In our case we propose a problem oriented approach to pressing issues of contemporary world politics and social ethics. Six workshops of the study program: We propose to study these issues of a development of a social ethics for a cosmopolitan world in the framework of six workshops during the three years of work of the study group. The six workshops will subsequently deal with following topics: 1. Conceptions of ethical and social values in postsecular society. 2. Economy and ethics in the context of the crisis of capitalism 3. Recognition, dignity and social battles for justice in intercultural society. 4. Climate and climate justice in the context of globalization of capitalism. 5. Political and social conceptions of post-colonialism in world society. 6. World government and transnational justice in the cosmopolitan society. 1. Conceptions of ethical and social values in post-secular society. This workshop will examine the foundations of a social ethics in post-secular society. It will look at classical concepts of social ethics and relate them to modern concepts of social ethics in a cosmopolitan perspective. The workshop will confront the positions of theories of social ethics from sociology, political science and economics etc. We will give an overview of the most important concepts of social ethics in the contemporary world. 2. Economy and ethics in the context of the crisis of capitalism. This workshop will discuss the causes and theories of the contemporary crisis of capitalism. It will investigate the potentials of a new economy of responsibility based on social ethics. It will discuss financial paradoxes and crisis dimensions in Nordic countries in an international perspective, but it will also address broader political and cultural aspects of the emergence of the crisis and potentialities for overcoming the crisis 3. Recognition, dignity and social battles for justice in intercultural society. This workshop will examine recognition and identity struggles that have emerged around the world as a result of post-secular society. It will look at the cultural and social consequence of globalization and it will deal with proposals for world justice as a result of globalization and it will deal with proposals for world justice as response to this. It will focus on different battles of recognition and assert how to influence democratic politics. 17

18 4. Climate and climate justice in the context of globalization of capitalism. This workshop will deal with environmental dilemmas of the global environmental crisis. It will discuss the climate change issue in the perspective of proposals for a new economy and it will assert how we should consider the climate change issue in relation to topics of identity struggles and poverty in developing countries. 5. Political and social conceptions of post-colonialism in world society. This workshop will deal with the changed power relations in the international community as a result of the postcolonial situation with the end of the West as dominating cultural and social powers. We will discuss different conceptions of post-colonialism. The workshop will look at the change of world power with the emergence of new powerful nations like for example China and it will discuss the problems that the developing countries face in relation to the world crisis. 6. World government and transnational justice in the cosmopolitan society. This workshop will deal with the relation of government and transnational justice in the globalized world. It will ask the question whether it is possible to have a cosmopolitan foundation for dealing with international problems and it will examine the political, legal and philosophical foundations of such an international movement towards a new cosmopolitanism. The result of the workshop will be a book collecting the best contributions. This book will present explanations and analysis of the theoretical dimension of social ethics and values, and it will propose concrete political and economic solutions for the future.
