1 The PhD School in BIOLOGICAL AND MEDICAL SCIENCES of the University of Insubria is a three-years curriculum for graduate students. Tutorial and research activities are mainly located within the Varese Departments of the University of Insubria. To be admitted to the PhD school on Biological and Medical Sciences, without any age limit, applicants graduated in Italy should hold a Laurea Magistrale degree or any previous equivalent italian Laurea degree (hereafter denoted simply as Laurea), or a German Diploma degree if graduated in Germany, a French or Czech Master degree if graduated in these countries. For applicants graduated in United Kingdom, at least a second class Honours Bachelor degree, followed, when required, by one year of post-graduate studies. For US applicants, a Master or a Bachelor degree. In case of students graduated in other countries, analogous degrees, officially recognized by the Academic Authorities of the University they join, are required. The access to the PhD school is regulated by a competitive examination and by competitive interview, carried out at the University of Insubria or by means of videoconference if specifically asked only by a candidate resident in a foreign country. The committee in charge of competitive examinations and interviews are composed of local staff members. At present, the PhD School of the University of Insubria offers two positions. - Duration The duration of the PhD School in BIOLOGICAL AND MEDICAL SCIENCES of the University of Insubria is 3 years. All admitted students have to pay fee. - Governing Boards Two Governing Boards are defined: - Board of Professors - Scientific Board The Board of Professors is composed by the Professors in charge of the different PhD Courses. The Scientific Board is composed by the Coordinators of the various PhD curricula included in the PhD School. At present the Curricula are: 1. Biotechnology 2. Cellular and Molecular Biology 3. Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology 4. Experimental Medicine and Oncology 5. Neurobiology PhD Course structure and final degree The PhD Course structure is based both on study and research work. The work unit into which the educational plan is broken down is the credit, as defined by the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The credit corresponds to 25 hours of work. The credit for study activities might normally include 8 hours class lectures or seminars and 17 hours of private study, or 25 hours for research work. ECTS credits may be assigned formally only to lectures and training courses officially

2 approved by the participating universities. Credits in the scientific areas reported below, taken during MSc, Laurea, DEA or Diploma degree, can be transferred to the PhD course, up to a maximum of 20 credits. In all cases, the remaining credits will be fulfilled within the first two years of the PhD course. The general structure of the course, with 60 credits per year, can be summarized as follows: First year 18 credits for graduate courses and seminars in the scientific areas addressed by the curricula included in the PhD program (see above) 40 credits for research work 2 credit for preparing a research progress report, that will be presented and discussed at the annual meeting of the Scientific Board. The above 18 taught credits could be taken as a part of the preliminary MSc, Laurea, Master or Diploma degree plans, prior to start the PhD programme. Second year 43 credits for research work 14 credits for graduate courses and seminars in scientific areas addressed by the curricula included in the PhD program (see above) 2 credits for Academic English 1 credit for preparing a research progress report that will be presented and discussed at the annual meeting of the Scientific Board. Third year 45 credits for research work. 1 credit for seminars on Bioethics. 2 credits for specific seminars 12 credits for PhD Thesis preparation and final dissertation. Each student will develop its study and research plan within 3 months from the starting date of the first year. The plan must be approved by the Board of Professors. Students are encouraged to spend up to 12 months abroad, in a different host Institution (University or Research Centres). The Board of Professors, under exceptional circumstances and/or for important scientific motivations, can authorize stays of longer periods, if compatible with their own local rules and internal academic regulations. At the end of every year, there will be an Annual Meeting of the Scientific Board. This will be the most important moment for scientific discussion, planning both teaching and research activities, officially monitoring the quality of the research work accomplished by each student and for assessing the credit fulfilment required for admission to the following year of the course or to the final thesis examination. Students selection for XXIV year is now open Candidates who possess a foreign academic qualification must present a written application available on the website. If the foreign degree has already been declared equivalent to the Italian degree, candidates must indicate the name of the Italian university and the date of the rectorial decree in which equivalence is stated. If the foreign degree has not been declared equivalent to an Italian degree, candidates must make an explicit request in the application to participate to the selection procedure, with the sole purpose of admittance to the

3 chosen Research Doctorate course. The application must be accompanied by the following documents: an authenticated copy of the qualification, a sworn translation of the said qualification with legal authentication of the relevant authorities in the country that issued the qualification, a declaration of its value in the said country issued by the relevant Italian Diplomatic Representation for the area, all the documents that are necessary for the University Teaching Staff to declare its equivalence. All documents that are presented may be in Italian or English. Official documents must be accompanied by an official translation in Italian together with legal authentication from the relevant authorities. A.
