FIELDS OF ACTION 1.1 TERRITORIAL SEISMIC MONITORING Seismic monitoring is carried out in areas subject to risks related to a seismogenic activity, by acquiring the seisms with time and recording the seismograms. Seismic stations are used able to record in threshold or continuous type, and low frequency geophones or seismic accelerometers. The recording in the long period, of the earthquakes relative to a site or fairly large area allows to configure the seismic scenario of an area and evaluate the risk and vulnerability conditions. If the monitoring activity is supported by specific knowledge of geological and geo-technical type, we are talking about seismic Micro-zoning. Figure 1. Example of seismic stationing - Campo Imperatore (AQ) 1.2 DYNAMIC SURVEYS ON STRUCTURES One of the key issues related to the stability and durability of modern buildings and such infrastructural works as masterpieces or places of historical interest, is represented by the assessment of the response to dynamic stresses they may be subjected to in the course of their lives as a result of those phenomena that can be continuous or constant over the time (such as the effect of the vehicular traffic, the wind on a bridge or the seismic events). In these cases it is necessary to accurately measure both speeds and accelerations that the structures can hold up without any significant damage. In order to measure the movements produced by dynamic stresses, it is necessary to use real-time sensors, because speed and frequency of the movements are so high to require data acquisition architectures usually made up of accelerometers with characteristics that vary depending on the investigated object and connected to high resolution acquisition systems. Below the main targets of the dynamic surveys on structures: - Checking the project s validity and consequent compliance to it in the realization of the work performed - Dynamic characterization of infrastructures, buildings, historical monuments affected by temporary or permanent vibrations induced by: urban, rail or any kind of heavy traffic - Real response of the structures to events of hydrologic or seismic instability. - Monitoring of damages or breaks of structural elements caused by induced vibrations - Verification of the work s durability prevision MAE Advanced Geophysics Instruments - Pagina 3/14

4 1.3 STRUCTURAL MONITORING In those areas characterized by seismic activity or hydro geological instability it is essential to monitor the impact that natural events (combined with the old structures and the usual poor quality of the materials used or with errors in design or execution of the works) may have on the existing buildings. Thanks to the structural monitoring systems it is possible to keep constantly under control the state of the buildings that have been affected by instability phenomena, in order to: - avoid irreparable damage or structural collapses - monitor the progress of the instability phenomena - manage the automatic alarm signals, due to the threshold's exceeding - assess the safety interventions to be quickly implemented - plan the restructuring interventions and assess their effectiveness on the structure during the time. The monitoring methodology to be applied is chosen according to the type of instability occured and it can be static, dynamic or both of them. The analysis of the structural elements affected by the phenomena of displacement, damage or breakage (more or less important) provides instructions on the type of sensors to be used and on the monitoring methodology to be applied to the specific case in analysis. The possible methods that can be applied originate from the results of the analysis performed; these can be enclosed in the main areas listed below: - Borehole inclinometer measurements - Measurements of displacement, subsiding, deformations and cracks (crack monitoring) - Structural elements inclination measurements - Seismic vibrations measurement - Investigations on walls and ground - Measurement of heat flows The data acquisition systems are able to acquire and record data on site using the automatic modes or send them to remote control stations. Similarly, you can set alarm thresholds and once these are overcome by the system, according to the settings of initial planning it can send alarm voice signals, MMS etc., or it can manage the activation of onsite sound alarms (siren) or visual alarms (traffic lights). 5 Chapter 2. SISMALOG 2.1 FUNCTIONING DESCRIPTION Stand-alone seismograph, for seismology and local events monitoring. This unit is designed for the recording and automatic storage of every seismic event either on internal SD memory or by sending data to the collection centre according to the modes set. It can be totally handled from PC using usb interface (local-control) or by web (remote-control). To recover data filed in the unit you can either use the USB connection or the GSM/GPRS modules integrated. Figure 3. Frontal panel of the unit The high technological content and flexibility of ensure the maximum accuracy in the data acquisition, as well as an extremely ease of use and immediacy during the configuration operations. is an acquisition unit that can be handled by remote-control; it is provided with high resolution acquisition card (24 bit), with sampler dedicated to every input channel. The flexible architecture of the unit ensures its stand-alone and online functioning: Stand-alone functioning - in the stand-alone functioning the alarm management is based on the continuous interpretation of the input signals on the 3 channels; when the thresholds (which can be set singularly with one or more channels for a settable time) are exceeded, this causes the alarm signal by remote control through sms (max.5 digits) and the alarm by local-control through the relay activation. 6 The alarm condition also determines the event recording on SD memory for a settable time (always after the event) in order to allow a further elaboration. In order to download data, the customer needs to use the EGsm-D gsm interface Online functioning The unit continuously sends the acquisition data of the 3 channels either by lan network (preferential channel) or gprs (secondary channel). In case of lack of both transmission channels, the unit starts the local-control recording until their restore. The acquisition centre will analyze the data, will determine epicentres and magnitude and will warn the competent authorities Alarms warning In warning through sms, to send data via gprs and to download them in gsm mode in stand-alone functioning, it is necessary to insert a sim card (data enabled) inside the unit. In case of online functioning it is possible not to use the GPRS section so as not to pay subscription costs of the SIM, the ability to send text messages, s or phone calls will be carried out from the control center. In this configuration, you can configure connections between the thresholds of different channels of different acquisitors networked, so as to minimize false alarms. Of course in case of LAN connection lack, the data logger will continue to acquire data locally without being able to send sms alarm. It will always be possible to report the local alarm by connecting an acoustic device, flashing at relay outputs, RL1 and RL2 of pic. 4. In the configuration of alarm thresholds it is possible to decide whether to send text messages and / or local report by closing one or both contacts. To increase the security of the system it is possible to connect one of the relay output to an alarm station using the kind of connection normally closed, in this case, any malfunctioning of the system or the cable connection would generate an alarm. One of the relay outputs may also be configured as an indicator of technical failures such as the lack of external power, LAN connection, gsm weak signal so as to notify the need for a technical intervention to restore normal operating conditions. 9 Chapter 3. MANAGEMENT AND CONFIGURATION In its basic version allows to conduct simple and fast monitoring with preset configurations, so as to allow the installation in all contexts and by unskilled personnel. In case of special needs the instrument can be configured in every detail both locally and remotely via request to Mae technical service (configuration and data visualization web service must be purchased) 3.1 LOCAL CONNECTION is equipped with a specific application for the complete management of the instrument. Using a USB connection, the software permits to change configuration of the operating parameters and data management, in particular: - Date and time setting - Setting of alarm sms in case of a seismic event or low battery - Functioning time configuration of a contingent alarm - Setting alarm threshold for each channel separately - Exceeding time of variable threshold configuration - Setting sampling frequency - Management of data recording on SD support - Download data recording directly on PC - Graphic visualization of the recording in real time - Setting of reference mobile phone numbers - Exceeding time of variable threshold configuration before sounding the alarm - Setting recording file dimension - Start/stop recording Figure 5. 10 Once the software is installed and data logger is connected to the PC, settings in the memory of connected will be automatically loaded so that the operator can control them and change them if necessary. If installed by unskilled personnel it will be possible to configure only the part of remote connection (such as a LAN connection if available) and the remaining parameters can be modified directly by Mae service center or by a skilled operator of the company through remote system. 11 3.2 ONLINE TRACKS DIFFUSION In case of stand-alone installations where it is not required to interface network or synchronized operation with other units it is also possible to provide a public web page display of data coming from the acquisition station. To do this on a dedicated PC, must be installed the utility server that will receive data in real time from the station, will generate the three tracks graph and make it available for loading at regular intervals on a website page of the end user. Figure 7. Data summary screen This option is usually required in case of installations in public buildings where in this way it is possible to constantly control the state of the system, monitor and if needed intervene to correct false alarms generated by background noise. 13 3.3 WEB SERVICE The network operation of several units requires the purchase of data collection service, monitoring and online display hosted on Mae web servers. Once purchased the service it is possible to configure all to send data to a static IP address behind which there will be servers for data collection. This procedure relieves the end user to prepare a data collection center with all the problems of cost and safety that would be faced in such cases. Block diagram of network components Access to the reserved section will be available directly on Mae website and gives access to the geographic map where will be highlighted the places of unit installation, by simply selecting the unit it will be possible to change configuration and: - Configure operating time of a possible siren - Set the alarm thresholds for each channel separately - Exceeding time of variable threshold configuration - Set sampling frequency - Management of data recording on SD support - Download the recording directly to PC - Vision graphics acquisition in real time - Set the time of exceeding the threshold values first to raise the alarm In the general section of the service will be possible to configure all options: - Management of mode and alarm levels MAE Advanced Geophysics Instruments - Pagina 13/14

14 - Management of credentials for a possible secondary access of only viewing - Modify references of the responsible staff to be notified - Intervals of data sending (in case of non-real-time sending) - Preferential interfaces Within the section will also be provided an interface to view traces coming from the different acquisition units with the possibility of carrying on certain types of simple elaborations directly online so as to eliminate the need for any software to be installed on the PC with the consequent freedom of make configurations, settings and controls from anywhere and from any terminal connected to internet Packets Standard packets for web service include: - Basic packet: collection and visualization of data coming from a maximum of 3 units with a storage dated back up to 6 months - Medium packet: collection and visualization of data coming from a maximum of 10 units with a storage dated back up to 6 months - Large packet: collection and visualization of data coming from a maximum of 15 units with a storage dated back up to 6 months - Online processing option: directly online post processing of data and visualization of results inside visualization section in addition to the standard packets it is also possible to develop solutions tailored to the needs.
