2 welcome to the EMNI - the European Mediation Network Initiative - includes mediators from more than 20 European countries. Its objectives are the promotion of mediation and the harmonization at the European level of the alternative dispute resolution methods in all the fields. In this perspective, and to provide an opportunity for sharing information and know-how, EMNI organizes its third conference in Bourg-la-Reine - Grand Paris (Hauts-de-Seine), on May 27 and 28, EMNI delegated the event s organization to the Association Nationale des Médiateurs (ANM), in France, in partnership with ESSEC-IRÉNÉ. ANM - l Association Nationale des Médiateurs ( was set up in Its membership is made of approximately 300 independent professional mediators active in the different fields of mediation. These welltrained mediators guarantee mediation s prospective clients the independence, impartiality and neutrality of their mediator. In addition to services rendered to members (vocational training, analysis of practices, professional insurance ), the association organizes events for the promotion of mediation, among which an annual symposium, the Fall Meeting (Rendez- Vous d Automne). The association is not subordinated to any trend of thought and fosters the oecumenism of training and culture, diversity and freedom of speech, while remaining vigilant on the respect of the Mediators National Deontology Code. ESSEC - IRÉNÉ ( ) was established in 1996 and is one of the leading research centers on negotiation and negotiated dispute resolution in Europe. It is based at ESSEC, one of the top French business schools. Its activities are centered around three pillars: - Training: it trains up to 2500 people per year (students and professionals in both the private and public sectors including the European Commission) in negotiation, mediation, team cohesiveness and leadership skills. - Research: it gathers professors, researchers and doctoral students around various issues pertaining to all kinds of negotiations and dispute resolution efforts. It organizes conferences and seminars. - Practice: through Negotiators of the World, it intervenes in postconflict situations all around the world to facilitate meetings of leaders trying to reconstruct their countries or regions. 2

8 DISCOVERING PARIS If it is your first visit in Paris, a trip on the Bateaux Mouches on the River Seine will give you the opportunity to discover the most beautiful monuments of Paris. There are many piers, the Bateaux Mouches at Pont de l Alma and the Vedettes de Paris at Pont Neuf are well known and easy to find. The sunset on the river Seine is magic. To have a panoramic view on Paris, go on top of the Eiffel Tower. You can also discover the city from the 5th floor of the Centre Pompidou at Beaubourg, from Montmartre, the Trocadéro or the Institut du Monde Arabe s terrace roof. You have to go to the Grands Magasins in the Opera area (Galeries Lafayette, Printemps). On top of the Printemps, at the 6th floor, you will discover the wonderful dome of the Printemps brasserie. Paris is also the city of museums. Go to the Louvre, for the building and the collections. To see the Pei pyramid in the courtyard open on the Tuileries gardens is a very intense moment. The rich collections of ancient Egypt, Greece (the Samothrace Victory), the Italian paintings (from the Quattrocento primitives to Da Vinci and Caravage), the French paintings (from the Fontainebleau school to David and Géricault), the Dutch masters (Rembrandt, Vermeer) or Spanish (El Greco, Murilllo or Velasquez) give you a chance to make a journey in the rechearch of the artists from the antiquity to the end of the XIX century. A suggestion: after your wanderings in the large galleries, go to the Café Richelieu or the Café Mollien. Paris would not be Paris without its cabarets. If you don t want to go to the Lido or the Moulin Rouge (very popular with the tourists), you can go to the Folies Bergère. If you are looking for a classical music concert, look at the programs of the Salle Pleyel, Châtelet or Cité de la Musique. You will find the ballets and operas at the Opera Garnier and Opera Bastille. 8

9 DISCOVERING PARIS If you want to discover the wide variety of Impressionism, go to the Musée d Orsay. Don t miss the Café on the top floor open on the galerie with the statues on the River Seine. If you like modern art, go to the Centre Pompidou, at Beaubourg. You ll see the masterpieces of women artists: Elles@centrepompidou. If you like Asian art, go to the Guimet or Cernuschi museums. Maybe you have heard about the last born museum in Paris, the Quai Branly. It is a beautiful building designed by Jean Nouvel, in a garden, near the Seine and the Eiffel Tower, where you can find the collections of primitive arts and visit The image factory, an exhibition created by Philippe Descola, an anthropologist, who shares with us his analysis of the 4 main strategies used by Humans around the world to make images. Fascinating. Of course, these are only a few ideas Let your feet guide you and you ll live your own Paris. Those of you who have already been in Paris, know that beyond the city of monuments and museums, the French Capital is made of several districts, the Paris villages, all different, with their own features. Don t hesitate to go off the beaten tracks. A walk along the Saint-Martin canal, a visit to La Villette or the Très Grande Bibliothèque (the Mitterand Library) and the Bercy gardens will put you in the Parisians footsteps. Go to the markets, in the cafés, in the gardens, discover the passages and the secret spots. Let you capture. 10 TWO SPOTS CLOSE TO PARIS The Versailles Palace After the 1999 tempest, the gardens have been restored as they were on Louis XIV time. Let follow your imagination and you ll be in the Sun-King Court Admire the famous Hall of Mirrors and the King s Grand Apartments. Access: there are three railway stations in Versailles. RER C, from Paris (Saint-Michel metro station), arrival Versailles Rive Gauche. Railway stations : - From the railway station Gare Montparnasse in Paris, arrival Versailles Chantiers. - From the railway station Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris, arrival Versailles Rive Droite. The Parc de Sceaux Very close to Bourg-la-Reine, where the conference is held, there is one of the most beautiful parks of the Ile de France region, the Parc de Sceaux. Large areas where to walk, have a picnic, admire the blossoming cherry trees at the end of May. You can walk to the Parc from the Agoreine, you go along the Boulevard du Maréchal Joffre and then take the Allée d Honneur. 11 MOVING IN PARIS The Metro The subway, one the symbols of Paris, has a very dense network. It is easy to use. You ll find the maps in all the stations. Look at the lines numbers (from 1 to 14). In the stations, you ll see the names of the directions which are the beginning and end of each line. Each station is different and some are decorated to give a special hint of the place where you are arriving : Louvre-Rivoli, Bastille, Hôtel de Ville and Tuileries on line 1, Parmentier on line 3, Cluny-Sorbonne on line 10, Arts et Métiers on line 11. We can also see the Art Deco entrance in some of them. The Bus Don t hesitate to take the bus. The map of the buses is on the subway map. You can use the same tickets to go on the bus and the subway. You can buy the ticket on the bus, but it is less expensive to buy 10 tickets altogether. The ticket is only for 1 ride. When you get off the bus or the metro, the ticket is not valid any more. There are a lot of lines, it is a nice way of discovering the city. If you want to try less classical ways of moving in Paris, take the Velib, the Open Tour, Voguéo or the Batobus. Vélib It is a real pleasure to discover Paris cycling, specially on Sunday mornings. You ll see a lot of stations with the grey bicycles. Read the information, pay and have fun. Available 24/24h, all days. The Open Tour buses Enjoy a wonderful view of Paris from the top of the bus. More than 50 stops. Voguéo First test of an ecological public transport, not designed for the tourists. You can take Voguéo at Gare d Austerlitz to go to Maisons Alfort. The trip is 1h20 long to go and come back. It gives you a chance to see another side of Paris. You can t use the bus or subway ticket if you don t have a pass. Rate : 3,- to go and 3,- to come back. Paris Batobus This bus on the River Seine allows you to arrive from the Seine in the most visited spots: Eiffel Tower, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Jardin des Plantes, Louvre, Orsay Museum, Hôtel de Ville (City Hall), Champs -Elysées. Daily pass: 13, - Time table: from 10am to 9pm from May

12 USEFUL TIPS Telephone All French numbers have 10 digits and begin with 0. The prefix for Paris and Ile-de-France numbers is 01. Mobile numbers start with 06. To call from France to another country, dial the international code 00, the code of the country, then the number without the first 0. Opening hours The majority of shops are open all day from 9am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday. On Saturday, the department stores are open from 9.30am to 9pm. Museums open at 9 or 10am and close between 5 or 6pm. Night openings: Friday until 10pm in the Louvre, Thursday until 9.45pm in the Orsay Museum, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, until 9pm in the Quai Branly Museum.
