4 Motivation Obesity is a worldwide public health problem The industrialization and globalization are the main generators of sedentary (WHO,2007) Overweight and obesity accounted for 5% of global mortality (WHO, 2009) In Brazil The 48.1% of the adult population in Brazil is overweight (POF, 2009) Overweight and obesity affect the 60% of Brazilians (VIGITEL, 2010) In children aged 5-9 years more than half are overweight (IBGE, 2011) IBGE, 2009

5 Background Customizable techniques Choosing the most appropriate technique to use (besides considerations of validity and reliability) is a commitment within the context of available resources, target population and focus of the study Technique good bad Questionnaires / Interviews Low cost, no invasive. subjectivity Doubly labeled water high reproducibility. expensive, Intrusive, laboratory Indirect calorimetry BMR, metabolic efficiency. uncomfortable, lab, expensive Cardiac monitoring Accelerometry monitoring Level of physical activity, noninvasive, free environment, cheap. Comfortable, small, cheap EE: cardiac performance affected by external factors. Accuracy depends on the location in the body Monitoring System of Assessment of Energy Expenditure to Human in Free-living Condition by Mean of Information and Communication Technologies Med-e-Tel, 2010
