Preston Crown Court is criminl court nd sits t two venues in the city; Preston Combined Court Centre on Ringwy nd Sessions House on Lncster Rod. The court house is lso the venue for Preston County Court, where smller civil cses nd fmily cses re delt with, nd is busy mgistrtes court. I would describe this experience s the most fscinting opportunity I hve tken up so fr. My expecttion ws tht I would turn up nd get told to sit in the gllery nd mybe get little fce time with the judge but the relity surpssed my expecttions. I ws ble to sit on the bench with the judge during court delibertions nd I lso retired with the judge into the chmbers whenever there ws n djournment. Wht impressed me the most ws how engged I ws with the process. I ws given ccess to ll the evidence nd reports into the cse nd the judge often sked for my thoughts nd provided guidnce nd n insight into judicil decision mking. The highlight of my work experience ws when the judge cited my comments in hering nd cknowledged tht this ws my observtion. This experience creted networking opportunity with brristers nd following my mrshlling I ws offered mini-pupillge t one of the biggest chmbers of brristers in Preston. 6 Interntionl Insight into EU Lw t Europen Prliment - Brussels Senior Lecturer, Shun Mills, recently took 46 students on n nnul study trip to the EU Institutions in Brussels nd Luxembourg. Shun commented on the excursion: The seven dy trip provides perfect blnce between eductionl ctivities nd leisure time. We styed in nice, centrlly locted hotels in Brussels nd Belgium; our Brussels Hotel ws literlly cross the rod from the beutiful Grnde Plce. The Trip is the perfect opportunity for lw students to mix with ech other nd for us ll to get tht feeling of belonging to the Lw School. This yer we hd lw students from first, second nd third yer undergrdute courses plus students from the Grdute Diplom in Lw nd even the LLM course. Students often sy tht they become good friends with people they would not hve met if it were not for the Trip. It is lso relly nice opportunity for the cdemic stff to get to know our students more. On one of the evenings the whole group (stff nd students) went out for mel together t Brussels oldest resturnt. This yer the Europen Commission, the Europen Prliment nd the Europen Court of Justice were the focus of the eductionl spects of the Trip nd students were treted to very interesting nd informtive tlks nd ctivities. Mny students commented on how useful these visits were to bring their EU lw studies to life. One student commented: The Trip ws fun nd interctive nd my understnding of the EU hs definitely incresed. I prticulrly enjoyed the group mel in Brussels, it ws fntstic to get to know everyone nd I felt like I relly belonged to the Lw School. The whole trip, both eductionl nd leisure time, ws terrific nd hugely beneficil. The EU Trip ws definitely the highlight of my time t UCLn so fr. Another student commented: The Trip more thn exceeded my expecttions nd I ws very plesed with how much I lernt. I found the creers tlks prticulrly useful nd I m now considering future creer with the EU. Visit to UCLn s Muritius Cmpus undertook debte on the Westminster system of government with their counterprts from the University of Muritius, nd were treted to rnge of culturl events lw students from Lncshire Lw School recently returned from study trip to Muritius. They were ccompnied by Michel Doherty, Principl Lecturer from the Lw School. The trip ws orgnised due to UCLn hving cmpus on Muritius in which the LLM Interntionl Business Lw is tught. Students from the UK were ble to meet the students on this course nd undertke development work. Another reson for the trip ws due to the unique Muritin legl system. With roots in both English nd French legl trditions, it mkes fscinting subject to explore further. The students undertook rnge of exciting nd informtive ctivities, including sessions with the British Council, where they were interviewed bout UK higher eduction by the locl television news. They lso hd presenttion on commercil legl dispute resolution with the hed of the Muritius Interntionl Arbitrtion Centre nd Michel Doherty commented on the trip: The week ws joy nd n cdemic success. A highlight ws the dy we were hosted by Her Honour Justice Cheong of the Supreme Court nd the Institute of Judicil nd Legl Studies (IJLS). In the morning we visited the Intermedite Court. We observed series of cses involving lrceny nd supply of drugs. In the de-briefing, the students sked rnge of questions bout the role of juries nd the orgnistion of cses, including the compulsory clling of witnesses nd the lnguge used in proceedings. We understnd tht this ws the first cdemic trip to Muritius by group of lw students from nywhere in the world. This llowed us to get privileged ccess to very senior people from the Muritin legl nd politicl system nd ws wonderful experience for the students.

7 Student Trips Cyprus trip for Ledership Progrmme Lw students recently embrked on three-dy Ledership Development Trining course, which took plce t UCLn s beutiful Cyprus cmpus. The progrmme focuses on providing students with the opportunity to explore their own ledership potentil through residentil Ledership Chllenge event. Senior Lecturer, Viv Ivins, ccompnied the students, nd commented on the trip: The course ws very prcticl. Lots of hnds-on ctivities designed to llow the students to ssess nd interpret their own bilities coupled with musing necdotes from the tlented, but mzingly lid-bck Cypriot tutors led to very engging nd thoughtprovoking first dy. The next two dys followed similr pttern; clssroom teching, lively ctivities in the sunshine nd lots of reflection nd feedbck. Stff nd students benefited from lerning new skills, gining vluble knowledge nd wreness of tem-working nd ledership techniques. All commented tht they felt much more confident, self-ssured nd motivted to set nd chieve new gols. Mixing with people they hd not previously met led to greter clrity in communiction nd growing self-ssurnce tht stepping out in the wide world ws not s ferful s some hd imgined. Cyprus is wonderful country the Cypriot people re extremely hospitble. The UCLn Cyprus cmpus is close to the resort town of Lrnc nd just few miles down the cost from Ayi Np nd there were few who enjoyed its uncertin delights! The costline is beutiful in this re Cpe Greco nd I ws most impressed when couple of our students, fter wtching locl lds lep over the edge of cliff into glorious turquoise wters below, stripped to their bikinis nd followed suit! The foundtion yer tught me how to cite cses, how to use different cdemic nd legl sources, nd how to be orgnised by mnging my time. The experience definitely put me t n dvntge for the first yer of the LLB Lw course. The Foundtion Entry yer provided me with close knit network of friends nd tutors. Moving on to the LLB Lw degree I hd the comfort of knowing the tutors nd students on the course. I met my closest friends nd my wife on the Foundtion Entry course! It ws set up in memory of Stephen Lwrence by interntionl lw firm Freshfields Bruckhus Deringer. All scholrs receive tilored personl nd professionl development progrmme focusing on written, presenttion nd numercy skills nd commercil wreness; interview coching nd creer guidnce; one-to-one mentoring; commercil fmiliristion during university holidys; n lterntive route to interview for trining contrct t the firm nd 3,500 contribution towrds course nd ssocited study-relted costs. I decided to study lw t college s I wnted to know how the legl system worked properly. My interest for the lw then developed so I decided to study it t university. Why did you choose Lncshire Lw School? I chose UCLn s Preston is smll city mking university the centre of ttention. The foundtion degree I studied first llowed gret insight into university life nd the LLB course. Did you come cross ny brriers long the wy? How did you overcome them? I d sy the biggest brrier I cme cross ws the thought of coming to uni to begin with nd not knowing whether or not I d be ble to hndle it. Also not hving nyone in my fmily to sk for dvice before I strted ment I just hd to hope for the best. How did you feel bout pplying for the Freshfields Stephen Lwrence Scholrship Scheme? When I ws sked to pply for the scholrship I ws overwhelmed. I knew of Stephen Lwrence s story nd the trust tht his mother hd set up nd ws honoured to be given the opportunity to pply for scholrship through their scheme. When I relised Freshfields re Mgic Circle lw firm* I never thought I would be successful but I ws relly excited bout the opportunity nd experience. How did Lncshire Lw School ssist in your ppliction process? Hilry Chdwick, my tutor from the foundtion course, selected me to pply for the scholrship. Hilry nd the Den of School, Lynne Livesey then met with me to explin the scholrship nd offered me the opportunity to pply. Hilry ws then required to fill in prt of the written ppliction form discussing why I ws selected to pply. The support from my tutors hs been gret nd I couldn t sk for more. How hs being wrded the scholrship ffected your future plns nd mbitions? The scholrship hs chnged everything. I thought I ws optimistic to think I my one dy become solicitor but now I hve the opportunity to work for mgic circle lw firm. This hs pushed my mbitions to new levels. Wht hve you gined from this experience so fr? Since strting on the scholrship I hve gined rel insight into wht it is like to be top city lwyer. It hs shown me how hrd work nd motivtion pys off. Wht dvice would you give to future students who my come from similr bckground to you? GRADUATE PROFILE Unlike most lw students who opt for the route of continuing on to postgrdute study or locting trining scheme, Abigil put her experience of being lw student towrds securing much sought-fter plce on Risk Grdute Scheme for one of the UK s lrgest bnks. Abigil explined: After grduting in August I joined The Risk Grdute Scheme t Lloyds Bnking Group in September. The Grdute Scheme is two yers long nd consists of four six month plcements. For my first plcement I ws bsed in London working in Commercil Bnking nd I m now in Leeds in Retil Bnking. ABIGAIL TYRER LLB (HONS) LAW, 2014 GRADUATE Although I hve not gone down the typicl Lw route, i.e. LPC nd trining contrct, I still use the skills tht I lernt during my lw degree every dy. By joining grdute scheme with one of the UK s lrgest bnks I hve opened myself up to n endless mount of opportunities in the future. The Grdute Scheme includes professionl qulifiction, so fter the two yers I will be qulified Chrtered Bnker. If I could provide ny dvice to future Lw students, it would be to put yourself forwrd for every opportunity. The more you do, the more you hve to tlk bout t interviews. 11 STUDENT PROFILE Linzi Idle LLB (Hons) Lw student, 2nd yer idle BlwgING Why did you decide to study the LLB course t UCLn? A creer in Lw ws never something tht I hd considered until I ttended Preston Crown Court s witness in quite hrrowing cse. It ws the single most scry nd intimidting experience tht I hve ever hd. But it ws lso incredibly inspiring. Wtching the dynmics of the courtroom encourged me to reserch creer within the legl industry. Being mture student 12 yers out of eduction, I never thought for one minute tht I would be where I m tody. Lncshire Lw School ws my one nd only preference. I m so lucky to hve such good university on my doorstep. How re you finding your course? The LLB, lthough chllenging, is fntstic. I lwys wondered why they cll it reding subject, but I understnd it now! There is so much more to the degree, however, thn just reding. The University offer so mny extr courses, workshops nd conferences tht students cn ttend for free, or for smll pyment. Attending these types of events hs vstly improved my ll-round knowledge of the legl industry s well s providing ccess to contcts tht hve been incredibly useful (especilly when it comes to work experience). There re times when you might feel utterly bombrded with work, ssignment dedlines nd presenttions. The key to mnging your work is to pln your time effectively. I try to look t homework the sme night tht I receive it, while it s still fresh in my mind. The stff re friendly nd pprochble nd I try to mke the most of their ssistnce. Are you involved in ny extrcurriculr ctivities? I like to think outside the box when it comes to work experience (due to fmily commitments), so when fellow student, Shminder Gll pproched me regrding setting up lw student blog, I thought it ws fntstic ide. I hd found wy to use my professionl skills nd relte them to my studies! The im of the blog website is to provide pltform for lw students t UCLn to voice their opinions bout points of lw, current ffirs or even student life. Prospective employers like to see student s pssion, nd blog is the perfect wy to evidence wht motivtes you s person nd legl professionl. Shminder nd I were lucky enough to secure n ffilition with the Lw School. We now hve both students nd tutors regulrly blogging on our site, nd we re currently in tlks to recruit nother three uthors spnning the entire degree pth from foundtion level to the LLM. Our biggest chievement to dte is securing volunteer from the Cyprus cmpus who will promote nd run the blog on our behlf. My pln fter grdution ws to enter the legl profession s children s solicitor or dvocte, deling with serious public lw cses. However my opinions hve chnged somewht you begin to relise your strengths nd weknesses when you become student. My strengths lie with public speking nd the more cdemic res mybe not with emotive subjects such s children. So for now, I m trying to keep my options open but I will most definitely be stying on to complete my LLM LPC (UCLn s combined LLM nd Legl Prctice Course). I hve been lucky enough to co-lecture number of times with the Public Services Course Leder, bsed on reserch I undertook in reltion to cyber-bullying I quite fncy teching, so will be looking further into my options for stying on t UCLn s lecturer. 11

Finlly, the University Service of the Yer wrd ws presented to the Lw School Student Office. PK: In your first yer you will spend between 13 nd 14 hours per week in tught lectures, workshops nd seminrs. In ddition to this you will be expected to spend round 20 hours per week on independent study wy from the clssroom. JA: There re mny resons why you my not hve the stndrd qulifictions for lw degree, but this doesn t men you re not eligible to study lw. JA: No we do not conduct interviews for lw courses t UCLn. Are there ny specil subject requirements for dmission to the courses? Will the Lw School help me find work experience? JA: Yes, we plce strong emphsis on employbility t every level of our degree progrmmes. We implement skills spine which runs through every yer. In the first yer you will look t legl skills nd employbility. In your second yer you will prticipte in mock job ppliction, including writing your CV nd being interviewed. In the third yer the focus is on interviewing nd negotition skills. There re lso lots of opportunities throughout your course to undertke rel work experience. You will hve the option to choose plcement module in Yer 3 where you will undertke work plcement nd write portfolio on your experiences. There is lso lw clinic module which gives students rel-life experience s they interview nd dvise members of the public. JA: University level support is vilble during your ppliction process. At the strt of your lw degree you will be ssigned personl tutor who is member of cdemic stff. You will meet with them regulrly to discuss your progress nd ny issues you my hve. Your personl tutor will be your point of contct for queries. How will my course be structured? EM: Your course is mde up of 3 yers of study - 4 yers if you embrk on the Foundtion Entry progrmme.
