Webinar Goals Why? Learn why more schools are turning to technology to overcome challenges Benefits of using technology What? How to choose the right program for your school Using the U.S Department of Education s What Works Clearinghouse effectively Differences between programs How? Discuss strategies for effectively and efficiently integrating technology into the classroom Do s and Don ts of technology integration Incorporating student feedback

Panel Introductions Jacqueline Canales - Curriculum Specialist - I CAN Learn Instructional Improvement System Kenya Wallach - K-12 Mathematics Instructional Specialist - Richmond Public Schools (Richmond, VA) Theresa Repak - Math Department Head/Teacher - Ellender Middle School (Jefferson, LA) Jay Forman - Publications Director - I CAN Learn Instructional Improvement System - Author, White Paper, The Effectiveness on Computer-Aided Mathematics Instruction in the New Era of STEM Education

Why? Benefits of using technology in the classroom Reduces cost Allows students to work at their own pace Provides individualized instruction for students of all abilities Closes achievement gaps Frees teachers to provide individual attention to students who need it most Our nation's schools have yet to unleash technology's full potential to transform learning. We're at an important transition point. We're getting ready to move from a predominantly print-based classroom to a digital learning environment. - U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan (November 2010)

Individualized Instruction Each lesson takes students through a series of comprehensive sections providing an interactive review of the skills presented. Pretest Warm-Up Presentation Guided Practice Independent Practice (IP) Journal Quiz Cumulative Tests/Reviews

What? Choosing the right intervention How and why to use the U.S. Department of Education s What Works Clearinghouse Institute of Education Sciences peer-review board Rate effectiveness of interventions: 1. Evidence of positive effects 2. Evidence of potentially positive effects 3. No discernible effects 4. Evidence of potentially negative effect 5. Evidence of negative effects Note size of study

How to integrate technology Perspectives from: Ellender Middle School (Jefferson,LA) Richmond Public Schools (Richmond, VA) Strategies for effectively and efficiently integrating technology into the classroom Sample lesson using technology Do s and don ts Incorporating data system and student feedback Successes

How to integrate technology Theresa Repak, Math Department Head/Teacher Ellender Middle School (Marrero,LA) Technology does not replace hardworking and knowledgeable instructors Teachers must work as hard, if not harder, to evaluate student progress Role changes from tedious tasks like grading papers to critical one-on-one instruction Comprehensive lesson plans must be tailored to specific student needs Data management and analysis becomes critical to measuring student performance.

How to integrate technology Theresa Repak, Math Department Head/Teacher Ellender Middle School (Marrero,LA) SUCCESSES Inner-city school consistently outperforms its peer institutions Test scores consistently among top in Jefferson Parish In 2009, one Algebra I student finished first in local competition and went on to finish first in state

How to integrate technology Theresa Repak, Math Department Head/Teacher Ellender Middle School (Marrero,LA) I was a little apprehensive when I started because I felt that as a teacher I needed to show my students what I knew about math and it made me feel very good to perform. Once I started using technology in my room, I realized that although I felt great teaching math in the traditional setting, I was only reaching a small number of my students. I was not adequately challenging my gifted students and I was above the level of those students who struggled in math. With the use of the technology, I am able to reach all of my students at their current level and take their math skills to the next level. It has been a gratifying experience to see students who hated math and performed so poorly now enjoy coming to class and finding success in doing math.

How to integrate technology Kenya Wallach K-12 Mathematics Instructional Specialist Richmond Public Schools (Richmond, VA) Districts can use technology to efficiently gather data to be used when evaluating student, teacher and school performance From district level, work with instructors on individual basis to make sure each teacher is taking full advantage of available technology Mold programs to specific school needs, e.g. targeting a struggling portion of students in a particular topic area

How to integrate technology Kenya Wallach K-12 Mathematics Instructional Specialist Richmond Public Schools (Richmond, VA) SUCCESSES District has expanded use of technology every year since first adopting programs Student scores have consistently improved and school now outperforms its peers on a regular basis Technology has improved performance of students, teachers and district personnel.

White Paper The Effectiveness of Computer-Aided Mathematics Instruction in the New Era of STEM Education Schools struggle staffing math classes; There is a persistent achievement gap for at-risk students in the subject area; and Resources are often not equitably allocated to STEM education in the classroom.

Data-Driven Results A 2009 study on the I CAN Learn IIS conducted by researchers from Princeton University and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago was published in the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy. This study concluded that: On average, students can achieve 1.5 years mastery of algebra in just one school year by using the I CAN Learn IIS; The I CAN Learn IIS effectively closes the achievement gap by one-third, particularly with minority and low-income students, on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP); and The I CAN Learn IIS is scientifically proven to be more cost effective than reducing class size from 25 to 15 students.

Success Story (Los Angeles, CA)

Success Story (Los Angeles, CA)

Select Success Stories [Technology] really engages all students. It pushes them to improve. Maury County (TN) Director of Schools Eddie Hickman California: Students in one Los Angeles Unified School District school experienced a 175 percent increase in achievement after just one year of using the program. Florida: In Martin County, a middle school with an 80 percent Hispanic enrollment and 50 percent of its students in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes implemented this IIS. The percentage of its students passing the state s math test nearly doubled during the time they were using the program from 38 percent in 2003 to just under 70 percent in Oklahoma: In a Greer County middle school, eighth grade students increased their pass rate on the state algebra test from 43% to 88% after using the program for just one semester.
