Clean Energy Fund Project Request Building Energy Tracking / Savings Spring 2015 M.R.Pelletier 3/2015

Clean Energy Fund Project Goals Provide a platform for students to access the campus energy consumption and have the ability to create scenarios that reduce energy and greenhouse gas creation. Create the ability to combine data from multiple sources into one common repository to simplify use. Develop a data archive that can be accessed to provide before and after evidence of benefits. Create an opportunity for students to understand energy flows in a real world environment. M.R.Pelletier 3/2015

Campus Background Total # Buildings > 350 Total Building Area ~ 5M SQ FT 2014 Annual Cost of Electricity = $8.3M > 100 electric accounts with smart meters 2014 Annual cost of Heating = $3.8M > 100 gas meters Central Cooling & Heating Plants 3 separate control systems which do not talk ~ 100 boilers and ~ 50 cooling units

Project summary Install hardware software and network interfaces to track up to 1000 data points for equipment and energy. Use historical data for developing base line energy for comparison Collect all smart electric meter data Automate equipment efficiency calculation (boilers & chillers) Create historical database for existing baseline data Create Dashboards Create operating tests for equipment and buildings Allow access of data to students for project improvements

Mads R. Almassalkhi Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering College of Engineering & Mathematic Sciences Proposed Project Benefits Prevent the start of extra equipment (peak power savings) Create run rules for scenarios Automatic alarm if energy use for weather conditions exceeds the best case in a previous year Implement load shedding of HVAC loads as needed for power savings Tracking 100+ electric meters by the 15 minute peak and drilling down into what causes the loads Create duplicate utility cost for invoice reconciliation (peak loads after power blips for example) Create awareness and understanding of the campus energy operations

Centennial Field Utility Shop (Test Installation) New Meter is wireless -data is available every 5 seconds Test device installed that reads electric meter and stores it on a web application.

Proposed Phasing Funding source to be UVM s Clean Energy Fund (CEF). Phase I Install Server, Software, and Port existing controls ($60,000) Phase II Complete polling of existing control systems for building data measurement points Start with Central Plant for generation then roll out to 3 buildings Create conversion table for converting control names to English Continue with building load conversion to the 3 building styles (Davis Ctr, Jeffords, Stafford/HSRF) $100,000 PPD will contribute 25% or $40,000 to this project. Requested funds = $120,000 M.R.Pelletier 3/2015

Project Objectives Collect instantaneous Smart Electric Meter data Create accessible database of energy consumption Store Real Time Metering for building loads Students create dashboards Students complete what-if scenarios Students work with PPD for review, test, and tracking Establish a perpetuating process for energy projects: Request funds Implement change Evaluate improvements against the baseline Repeat

Educational Component Provide student access to data for classes with Prof. Mads Almassalkhi EE, for utility rate structures, equipment performance evaluations, load forecasting, system optimization, etc. OSI PI Software for students use live trending & excel export Create custom dashboards to access data Assist PPD to identify and implement 1% savings UVM Press Release will be planned. CEMS courses incorporating energy data anticipated (EE113, EE215, and possibly other courses as well).

Dear CEF, I joined UVM in August 2014 as an assistant professor in electrical engineering (emphasis: power systems, controls, optimization) after having spent the prior two years with a green-tech startup company that worked with multiple university campuses energy plants on improving and driving economic energy efficiency. The key to any success in the energy domain is having easy access to high quality data. This is exactly the focus of PPD s proposal and I wholeheartedly support this proposal, because the benefits of good quality data are plentiful: 1) enables proper base lining of efficiency measures 2) provides insight into asset performance/investments 3) improves situational awareness of operators and managers (dispatch, maintenance, rates, CapEx) 4) gives students access to valuable energy data for research/course projects I look forward to be able to have my students easily access energy, rate, ambient data of UVM s energy plant for both research project and curriculum development. I currently have two undergraduate students working with UVM energy plant data and significant time is required from PPD personnel and the students to translate internal tags to meaningful descriptors with proper units. The current state of the data makes it too cumbersome to include the energy data in my course this semester (EE113: Intro to Electric Energy Systems), even though it would be valuable as we cover energy plants, efficiency, energy conversion, dispatch of energy assets, and renewable energy. Instead of using actual energy data, I have to use synthetic data, which keeps the students in the textbook-world and detracts from the lessons by omitting real-world data. The course EE215: Electric Energy System Analysis could also utilize energy data, especially combined with the utility rates to discuss the complexities of rate structures with energy dispatch decisions. In addition to providing value to PPD staff, energy plant operations, and UVM energy courses, the value of high quality data for research projects should not be underestimated. The CEF proposal, if funded, would enable UVM s energy plant to act as a virtual test-bed for energy system analysis, optimization, energy modeling and forecasting, etc. Upon development of innovative and original research in energy systems, UVM Energy Plant could act as a cyber-physical energy test-bed for advanced optimization/controls methods that are developed in-house by UVM s faculty and students. This provides UVM an advantage in pursuing external research funding as we can boast of a functional test-bed that integrates research and education. This is something that UVM and Vermont will be proud of. I look forward to see this project move forward and believe CEF represents an outstanding win-win avenue for this proposal. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at Thank you for your time, Mads Almassalkhi Assistant Professor in Electrical Engineering College of Engineering & Mathematical Sciences 200A Farrell Hall, University of Vermont 210 Colchester Avenue, Burlington, VT Phone: (802)
