1 PIE Teaching Associate Assistantship Information Application Deadline for is May 15, 2013 Purpose of the PIE Teaching Associate Program This program helps to improve teaching across campus by helping departments enhance their graduate student preparation programs and establish interdisciplinary connections and community among graduate students at FSU. This program is designed to be an outreach to academic departments and programs in support of individual departmental graduate student development. A PIE Teaching Associate is an experienced graduate student teaching assistant (TA) nominated by his/her academic department and trained by the Program for Instructional Excellence (PIE). They serve as mentors for other TAs in the department and assist PIE with university workshops, conferences, teaching awards, and other events. Successful candidates will demonstrate an interest in pedagogy and teaching related issues, a commitment to helping new graduate students, and a commitment to service and scholarly activities. PIE Teaching Associates serve for one year and earn a stipend of $2,000 for his/her work. (Note: The stipend received for participating in this program does not reduce the amount received for a teaching assistantship unless you are an international student in which you cannot carry more than 20 hours). Funding for PIE Teaching Associates is provided by The Graduate School. PIE Teaching Associates receive a stipend of $2, for an academic year appointment (Fall and Spring Semesters). It is a.0625 FTE = 5 hours a week. This stipend is in addition to any teaching assistant stipend provided by the department. Tuition waivers are not provided for this appointment. The number of appointments offered each academic year is usually 15. Eligibility requirements: Be enrolled as a graduate student Have a strong interest in teaching Be in good academic standing and progress toward degree Prior teaching experience at FSU Commitment for the academic year Availability for approximately 5 hours a week during the semester, plus training & Fall PIE Teaching Conference/TA Orientation Recommendation and departmental support of position

2 If selected PIE Teaching Associates agree to: Attend PIE Associate meetings as scheduled Conduct a department needs assessment Develop a departmental proposal to support departmental TA training based on needs assessment Facilitate/set-up a departmental workshop Present or co-present a University-wide workshop Complete a mid-year report Complete a final-report Assist with PIE Teaching Conference/TA Orientations Serve on the Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award Committee Selection is determined by: 1. Department recommendation/support for position 2. Teaching Experience/and student evaluations 3. Number of TAs in their department 4. Commitment to the program 5. Career goals 6. Diversity (e.g., gender, ethnicity, disciplinary distribution) 2

6 Instructions for PIE Teaching Associate Application Submission Submit your PIE Teaching Associate application in the PDF file format to the Blackboard site of PIE Teaching Associates. Here is how: 1. Log onto Blackboard ( ) using your FSU user name and password 2. Click on the Organizations tab on the main menu to bring you to the Organizations page. 3. Type in PIE Associates in the Organization Search box and click on Go. 4. You will find the organizational Blackboard site of PIE Associates pop up in the list of search results. Click on the down grey arrow icon to the right of the Organization ID to display the pull-down menu. Click on Enroll on the pull-down menu to self-enroll. 1

7 Instructions for PIE Teaching Associate Application Submission 5. This will lead you to the self-enroll window as shown below. Click on Submit to self-enroll. 6. Click OK on the next page to confirm self-enrollment. You should be in the Bb site and it will be displayed under your Organizations. 2

Click on Submit Application on the left side of the screen. 8. Then (1) Right click on PIE Associate Application 12 doc and save target as your last name_first name_appl.; (2) Open saved word document; (3) fill in all grey areas; (4) save as a PDF on your computer; (5) Click on PART I PIE Teaching Associate Application. 3
